Aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation under axial loading. While CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure but its specific strength and stiffness is higher than those of aluminum member. In this study, for complement of detects and synergy effect by combination with the advantages of each member, the axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum CFRP members which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular members. Based on the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP members, crushing behavior and energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum CRRP members which have different CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness Test results showed that aluminum CFRP members supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP members due to ductile nature of inner aluminum members. It turned out that the CFRP fiber orientation angle and thickness influence energy absorption capability together with the collapse mode of the members.

With the respective collapse characteristics of aluminum and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes in mind, axial collapse tests were performed for aluminum/CFRP compound tubes, which are composed of square or circular shaped aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP outside. In this study, the collapse modes and the energy absorption characteristics were analyzed for aluminum/CFRP compound tubes which have different fiber orientation angle of CFRP. Fracture modes in the aluminum/CFRP compound tubes were rather stable than those in the CFRP tubes alone, probably due to the ductile nature of the inner aluminum tubes. The absorbed energy per unit volume of the aluminum or the aluminum/CFRP compound tubes was higher than that of CFRP tubes. Meanwhile, the absorbed energy per unit mass, for the light-weight design aspect was higher in the aluminum/CFRP compound tubes than in the aluminum tubes or the CFRP tubes. The energy absorption turned out to be higher in circular tubes than in square tubes. Beside the collapse modes and the energy absorption characteristics were influenced by the orientation angle, and the compound tubes took the most effective energy absorption when the fiber orientation angle of CFRP was 90 degrees.

Owing to the global energy crisis, studies have strongly focused on realizing energy savings through vehicle weight reduction using light metal alloys or polymer composites. Polymer composites afford many advantages including enabling the fabrication of complex shapes by injection molding, and glass and carbon fibers offer improved mechanical properties. However, the high temperature in an engine room and the high humidity during the rainy season can degrade the mechanical properties of the polymer. In this study, the mechanical properties of injection-molded glass-fiber-reinforced polymer were assessed at a temperature of $85^{\circ}C$ and the maximum moisture absorption conditions. The result showed a 23% reduction in the maximum tensile strength under high temperature, 30% reduction under maximum moisture absorption, and 70% reduction under both heat and moisture conditions. For material selection during the design process, the effects of high temperature and high humidity should be considered.

An electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) can usually generate or detect an ultrasonic wave into specimens across a small gap. Especially stiffness of composites depends on layup sequence of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates because the layup of composite laminates influences there properties. It is very important to evaluate the layup errors in prepreg laminates. A nondestructive technique can therefore serve as a useful measurement for detecting layup errors. It was shown experimentally that this shear waves for detecting the presence of the errors is very sensitive. It is found that high probability shows between tests and the model developed in characterizing cured layups of the laminates. Also a C-scan method was used for detecting layup of the laminates because of extracting fiber orientation information from the ultrasonic reflection caused by structural imperfections in the laminates. Therefore, it was found that interface C-scan images show the fiber orientation information by using two-dimensional fast Fourier transform(2-D FFT).

The recent trend of vehicle design aims at crash safety and environmentally-friendly aspect. For the crash safety aspect, energy absorbing members should be absorbed with collision energy sufficiently. But vehicle structure must be light weight for the environmentally-friendly aspect, in order to improve fuel efficiency and to reduce tail gas emission. Therefore, the light weight of vehicle must be achieved in a status of securing safety of crash. An aluminum or CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) is representative one among the light-weight materials. In this study, impact collapse behavior of circular hybrid thin-walled member is evaluated. The hybrid members are manufactured by wrapping CFRP prepreg sheets outside the aluminum circular members in the autoclave. Because the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties change with its stacking condition, special attention is given to the effects of the stacking condition on the collapse behavior evaluation of the hybrid thin-walled member. Collapse mode and energy absorption capability of the hybrid thin-walled member are analyzed with change of the fiber orientation angle and interface number.

CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) has many industrial applications due to its low weight and high strength properties. Due to its superior properties, for example, excellent resistance to fatigue wear, corrosion, and breakage from fatigue, it has been widely applicable to aircraft, automotive, and medical industries and so on. The main machining for CFRP is drilling, and route milling. In case of drilling, the machining defects such as the delamination of each layer, uncut fiber, resin burning, spalling, and exit burrs are inevitable. The issue to remove such kind of defects is necessary to make CFRP parts successful. From this point of view, this paper investigates the removal effectiveness of machining defects existing at exit region with different type of tool geometries. Consequently, based on the experiments, the tool geometry is most impact factor to remove uncut fiber or resin.

This paper deals with the experimental study on the hygrothermal ageing effect to the strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) materials for marine leisure boat manufactured by vacuum assisted resin infusion method. The experiments performed consist of tensile, flexural and shear tests according to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Korean Industrial Standards (KS) test methods. Test coupons are varied from uni-directional(UD, $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$), Bi-Directional (BD), and Double-Bias (DB) carbon fiber fabrics in conjunction with epoxy resin. The results of tensile test show that tensile strength reduces significantly while not the same degree of reduction is observed for elasticity modulus with respect to the existence of hygrothermal ageing effect. This implies that the tensile strain induced from external load holds steady values but ultimate strength values change widely under hygrothermal ageing effect. In case of the flexural test, $0^{\circ}$ UD shows more strength reduction than $90^{\circ}$ UD while BD has reduced values in both flexural strength and elasticity modulus under hygrothermal ageing effect. It is learned that the bending strain induced from external load and ultimate strength values are reduced with respect to hygrothermal ageing effect. Shear test performed only on DB materials, and the results show marginal reduction in ultimate strength and moderate reduction in elasticity modulus. This means that the shear strain varies more than ultimate shear strength with respect to hygrothermal ageing effect. The experiment conducted in this paper clearly demonstrates the differences in material properties of the CFRP for the consideration of hygrothermal ageing effect. Findings obtained from this experimental study can serve as a fundamental input data for the realistic structural responses of marine leisure boat built in CFRP materials.

The off-axis tensile strength of the unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic and the residual strength of impact damaged CFRP were measured and compared with the stress wave factor (SWF) of the specimens. The SWF values were measured to be decreased with the strength reduction in both cases and found to be useful for the nondestructive strength evaluation of unidirectional CFRP. The failure behaviour of the unidirectional CFRP during off-axis tensile testing was also monitored by acoustic emission(AE) method. The AE energy release showed the characteristic feature depending on the off-axis angle and this result was analyzed to be caused by the difference of the expected failure mode depending on the off-axis angle. The failure mode of CFRP was found to be analyzed by investigation of the peak amplitude distribution of AE.
Recently, domestic railway related institutes are developing pantographs for high speed trains; to lighten the upper arm, this device has a composite structure of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and aluminum instead of conventional steel. In the case of KTX-Sancheon, the pantograph must have a large current capacity because this system is of power-car type, supplying all necessary power for the train through a single pantograph. If the thickness of the pipe is arbitrarily increased in order to increase the current carrying capacity, without analyzing the thermal characteristics of the aluminum pipe, the increase in the weight of the upper arm may cause degradation of the current collecting performance. Therefore, in this paper, using the thermal analysis technique, we analyze the temperature change characteristics of the aluminum pipe of the upper arm over time, while receiving power at the stationary state of the KTX-Sancheon; we also examine the adequacy of the minimum thickness of the aluminum pipe in accordance with the proposed pantograph flow capacity.
In this work, the electroplating of copper was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurements. Its mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of Cu-plated carbon fibers-reinforced composites (Cu-CFRPs) enhanced with increasing the Cu plating time, Cu content and COOH group up to Cu-CFRP-30. However, the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs decreased dramatically in the excessively Cu-plated CFRPs sample. In conclusion, the presence of Cu particles on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs, but the excessive Cu content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system.
