(1-Chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene or 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene was reacted with 2-amino-phenol to give the model compound, hydroxy enaminonitrile, which was found to undergo thermal cyclization reaction to form the corresponding benzoxazole. This intramolecular cyclization reaction is expected to occur through nucleophilic attack to electropositive enamine carbon by ortho-hydroxy group on the phenyl ring, which is accompanied by the release of neutral malononitrile through rearrangement. From each bifunctional monomer, o-hydroxy substituted polyenaminonitrile was prepared and characterized as a new precursor polymer for well-known aromatic polybenzoxazole. Also the unusual macrocyclic dimer formation from the 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane polymerization reaction system was discussed. The thermal cyclization reactions and the properties of polymers were investigated using FT-IR and thermal analysis (DSC & TGA).
Three strains (JC1, JC2, and HY1) of aerobic carbon monoxide (CO)-utilizing Acinetobacter were isolated from soil through CO-enrichment culture technique. All of them were Gram-negative, nonmotile, and rod-shated but they were changed to spherical form at the end of logarithmic phase. They were resistant to penicillin and able to frow at $42^{\circ}C$. The guanine plus cytosine contents of the DNAs ranged from 43 to 44.5 mol%. Oxidase was not present in all cells. The colonies were smooth and whitish yellow. Heterotrophic growth occurred on several sugars, organic acids, amino acids, and alcohols. The doubling times under and atmosphere of 30% CO and 70% air at $30^{\circ}C$ were 19h, 25h, and 35h, respectively, for JC1, JC2, and HY1, JC1 was studied in more detail. The cells were grown optimally in a mineral medium (pH 6.8) under a gas mixture of 30% CO and 70% air at $30^{\circ}C$. Growth of the cells with CO did not depend on molybdenum. It was able to grow with 100 ppm of CO in air as a sole source of carbon and energy.

Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) has been observed around the weld region of control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles in nuclear power plants overseas. The weld has a J-shaped groove and it connects the CRDM nozzle with the reactor vessel upper head (RVUH). It is a dissimilar metal weld (DMW), because the CRDM is made of alloy 600 and the RVUH is made of carbon steel. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to estimate the stress condition around the weld region. Generally, it is known that a high tensile region is more susceptible to PWSCC. FEA was performed as for the condition of welding, hydrostatic test and normal operation successively to observe how the residual stress changes due to plant condition. The FEA results show that a high tensile stress region is formed around the weld starting point on the inner surface and around the weld stop point on the outer surface.
Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.
Biological Treatment of Wastewater Containing Chlorinated Phenols by a Mixed Culture. Lee, Wan-Seok1, Sang-Wook Jung, Chan-Sun Park, Byung-Dae Yoon, Jang-Eok Kim\ and Hee-Mock Oh*. Environmental Bioresources Laboratory, Korea Research Institute of Biosicence and Biotechnology, Taejon, Korea, 1 Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Kyungpool< National University, Taegu, Korea - The biodegradation of chlorinated phenols in an artificial wastewater was investigated using a mixed culture. The mixed culture was composed of 8 microorganisms isolated from the soil contaminated with various chlorinated phenols. Pseudomonas sp. BM as a main constituent of a mixed culture was Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and rod-shaped, and did not grow at 41°C. It degraded 99% of initial 500 mg!1 of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the minimal salts medium as a sole source of carbon and energy within 3 days. The degradation efficiency of Pseu.domon.as sp. BM was not affected by the other organic carbon and nitrogen compounds. Pseudomonas sp. BM was able to grow in a broad range of pH 5 - 8, and degrade 2,000 mg/1 PCP. In the experiment with an artificial wastewater containing chlorinated phenols, the degradation efficiency of the mixed culture was the range of 73% (2,4-dichlorophenol) -96% (2-chlorophenol) during an incubation of 7 days. In a continuous culture experiment, the degradation efficiency of mixed culture plus activated sludge was about 2 times higher than that of the control containing only activated sludge. These results indicate that it is possible to apply the mixed culture to other wastewaters containing chlorinated phenols. Key words: Biodegradation, chlorinated phenols, pentachlorophenol, Pseudomonas sp. BM
This experiment was conducted to determine the safety and feasibility of using compost-promoting-bacteria. Compost-promoting-bacteria was isolated from livestock compost containing sawdust. The isolated bacteria was identified as Bacillus subtilis LYH201 by the method of the composition of the fatty acid with MIDI system and Bergey's manual. This Bacillus subtilis LYH201 had the following characteristics : Gram-positive, straight rod ($0.5{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$ width, $2.5{\sim}3.0{\mu}m$ length), facultatively aerobic and product of xylanase, CMCase, catalase, oxidase, protease and $0.5{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$-amylase. Growth of Bacillus subtilis LYH201 at saccharose as carbon source(0.5%) was faster than other carbon source. Activity of cellulase. $0.5{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$-amylase and protease from Bacillus subtilis LYH201 after 24 hours at $50^{\circ}C$ by agar diffusion method was higher than that of low temperature. Optimum growth condition of Bacillus subtilis LYH201 was $50^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.

This study was carried out for establishing the physical recycling technique for commercializing process on household batteries. The procedure involves shape separator, crushing, magnetic separation, classification and eddy current separation in sequence. The separation capacity was 400-600 unit cell/hr with shape separation system. The impurities such as manganese and zinc in the magnetic product were below 0.1% respectively, the concentration of iron was above 99% in spent carbon zinc battery. Also non-magnetic products are composed of 22-30% En, 16-22% Mn, 1-3% Fe in the case oi spent zinc carbon battery. The amounts of other components such as carbon rod, plastics and separator were about 37-50%. From the eddy current separation of nonferrous products, the plate-type zinc components were separated up to 96% with 2,250-2,750 meter/min of the conveyor speed.

This paper presents fabrication method of nano-structured PMMA substrates as well as evaluations of their optical transmittance. For anti-reflective surface, surface coating method had been conventionally used. However, it requires high cost, complicated process and post-processing times. In this study, we suggested the fabrication method of anti-reflective surface by the hot embossing process. Using the nano patterned master fabricated by anodic aluminum oxidation process. Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) is widely used as templates or a molds for various applications such as carbon nano tube (CNT), nano rod and nano dots. Anodic aluminum oxidation process provides highly ordered regular nano-structures on the large area, while conventional pattering methods such as E-beam and FIB can fabricate arbitrary nano-structures on small area. We fabricated a porous alumina hole array with various inter-pore distance and pore diameter. In order to replicate nano-structures using alumina nano hole array patterns, we have carried out hot-embossing process with PMMA substrates. Finally the nano-structured PMMA substrates were fabricated and their optical transmittances were measured in order to evaluate the charateristivs of anti-reflection. Anti-reflective structure can be applied to various displays and automobile components.
A previously unreported bacterial disease on chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings affecting as many as 4% of seedlings was observed in greenhouses in Chihuahua, Mexico (Delicias and Meoqui counties). Initial lesions appeared as irregular small spots on leaves and brown necrosis at margins tips were observed. Later, the spots became necrotic with a chlorotic halo. Advanced disease was associated with defoliation. A Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from diseased chili pepper seedlings. Three inoculation methods revealed that isolated strains produce foliage symptoms, similar to those observed in naturally infected seedlings. Pathogenic strains that caused symptoms in inoculated seedlings were re-isolated and identified to fulfill koch's postulate. Polyphasic approaches for identification including biochemical assays (API 20E and 50CH), carbon source utilization profiling (Biolog) and 16S rDNA, hsp60 and rpoB sequence analysis were done. Enterobacter cloacae was identified as the causal agent of this outbreak on chili pepper seedlings.

The aerobic photosynthetic bacterium, which produces bacterial carotenoids was isolated and identified from coastal marine environments. This bacterium was identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and designated as Erythrobacter longus SY-46. E. longus SY-46 was Gram negative and rod shape, and the optimal culture conditions were $25^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0, and 3.0% NaCl concentration, respectively. The carbon and nitrogen sources required for the optimal growth were lactose and tryptone, respectively. Fatty acid compositions of E. longus SY-46 were $C_{18:1}$(78.32%), v-linolenic acid($C_{18:3n9.12.15c}:3.83%$), margaric acid($C_{17:0}$: 3.38%), palmitic acid($C_{16:0}$: 3.07%), and docosahexaenoic acid($C_{22:6n3}$: 2.21%). In addition, E. longus SY-46 showed the characteristic absorption peaks of bacterial carotenoids(in the region of 450 to 480 nm) and bacteriochlorophyll(770 to 772 nm). Major carotenoids of E. longus SY-46 were polyhydroxylated xanthophylls such as fucoxanthin and zeaxanthin.
