  • Using a magnetic separation process, pond ash generated in thermoelectric power plants was separated into magnetic materials and nonmagnetic materials in order to make it into a raw material of geopolymers and unburned carbon; screening characteristics according to the particle sizes and magnet strength levels of the pond ash were observed. Based on the results of magnetic separation into fine particle (0.15~0.84 mm) and rough particle (0.84~2.4 mm) pond ash using 3000 G magnets, the weight fraction and ignition loss of nonmagnetic materials were found to be higher than those of magnetic materials, regardless of the particle size. In the case of fine particle pond ash, when the magnet strength was increased from 3000 G to 10000 G, even those materials that were weakly magnetic were separated into magnetic materials, leading to drastic increases in the weight fraction of magnetic materials, such that the ignition loss accounted for 66.9 % (22.8 wt%) of the entire ignition loss of 32.6 wt%, despite of the low ignition loss. Based on the results of measurement of the compressive strength levels of geopolymers made of magnetic-separated rough particle pond ash, the compressive strength of geopolymers made of magnetic materials containing small amounts of unburned carbon was found to be 20 MPa.

  • This paper describes activated carbon block filters prepared by extrusion for water purifier. The specific surface area of the activated carbon blocks affecting the properties of a polymer binder were investigated. Polyethylene (PE) particles were used as a binder polymer and the effect of particle sizes on changes in the specific surface area of activated carbon blocks in addition to the adsorption properties of chloride anion in the aqueous solution were investigated. The sizes and shapes of PE particles were measured using SEM. The specific surface area of activated carbon was $1186m^2/g$. The specific surface area of PE binder was $444m^2/g$ and $940m^2/g$ with the particle sizes of $200{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$, respectively. In order to verify the performance of the filter, chlorine adsorption experiments were conducted.

  • A fluidized bed reactor is made with quartz. The size of FBR is 0.055 m I.D. and 1.0 m in height. The FBR was employed for the thermocatalytic decomposition of propane to produce hydrogen without $CO_{2}$. The fluidized bed was proposed for the continuous withdraw of product carbons from the reactor. Carbon black DCC-N330 is used to decompose the propane gas. The propane decomposition reaction over carbon black catalyst in a fluidized bed reactor was carried out the temperature range of 600 ${\sim}$ 800 $^{\circ}C$, propane gas velocity of 1.0 ${\sim}$ 4.0$U_{mf}$($1U_{mf}$ = 0.61cm/s) and the catalyst loading of 100 ${\sim}$ 200g. Production of $H_{2}$ such as other reaction temperature, gas velocity, catalytic loading on the reaction rates was investigated. The carbon depositied on the catalyst surface was observed by FE-SEM. The particle size of the carbon black was observed by Particle size analyzer. Resulting production in the experiment was not only hydrogen but also several by-products such as methane, ethylene, ethane, and propylene.

  • This study shows the effect of addition of $LiCoO_2$, with different milling time ranging from 0, 30, 200 hours, to the activated carbon electrode. Test cells consisting of activated carbon (100-X%) and $LiCoO_2$ (X%)were made (where X=10, 20, and 40). Test cells with varying concentrations of $LiCoO_2$ which differ in the milling time showed improved specific capacity compare with the cells fabricated using activated carbon alone. The enhanced capacity may be caused due to the addition of $LiCoO_2$ powders at varying concentration. An improved ESR value obtained may be caused by the smaller particle size of $LiCoO_2$. It was concluded that finer the particle size higher will be the efficiency.

  • The study on laser-ablation plasmas has been strongly interested in fundamental aspects of laser-solid interaction and consequent plasma generation. In particular, this plasma has been widely used for the deposition of thin solid films and applied to the semiconductors and insulators. In this paper, we developed and discussed the generation of carbon ablation plasmas emitted by laser radiation on a solid target, graphite. The progress of carbon plasmas by laser-ablation was simulated using Monte-Carlo particle model under the pressures of vacuum, 1 Pa, 10 Pa and 66 Pa. At the results, carbon particles with low energy were deposited on the substrate as the pressure becomes higher. However, there was no difference of deposition distributions of carbon particles on the substrate regardless of the pressure.

  • The concentration and composition of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere can directly reflect the environmental pollution. The atmospheric pollution in some Cameroonian cities is increasing with the industrial development and urbanization. Air pollution is inherently complex, containing PM of varied size and composition. This PM exists as a dynamic cloud interacting with sunlight and is modified by the meteorology. The reflectometer and the EDXRF spectrometry are applied to determine the concentration of some specific elements at four sites in the city of Yaound$\acute{e}$. The particular aim of the present work is to put in place data base on air pollution in urban area and elaborate regulations on the emissions issued to industrial and vehicle activities. This study provides an overview of the concentration of black carbon and some specific elements in the air, which have impacts on human health. The measurement was done by distinguishing the size of particle. So that, the particle with aerodynamic diameter between $2.5-10{\mu}m$ (so-called coarse particle) and aerodynamic diameter < $2.5{\mu}m$ (so-called fine particle) were considered to obtain more information about levels of the inhalable fraction of the location. The results obtained in four locations of the city of Yaound$\acute{e}$ show that the black carbon concentration is very considerable, the element sulfur is a major pollutant and the concentration of fine particle is very greater. The results obtained of fine and coarse filters range from $5-17{\mu}g/m^3$ and $10-18{\mu}g/m^3$ for the black carbon. S, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Se and Hg are the specific findings of this work. The pollutants with a greater concentration are S, Pb, and Zn. These later seem to be non-uniformly, non-regular in some location and high compared to other countries. This work allows us to make a potential relation between pollutants and emission sources. In this framework, some suggestions have been proposed to reduce emissions for an improvement of the air quality in the environment and thus, the one of the city of Yaound$\acute{e}$.

  • Four coal sources that had different ash contents were evaluated in a drop tube furnace (DTF). Combustion experiments were conducted by using several sources with different particle sizes and excess air ratios under air-staging conditions to determine the optimized combustion conditions of high-ash coal, with an emphasis on the combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. The results show that the higher ash content results in a large amount of carbon remaining unburned, and that this effect is dominant when the largest particle size is used. Furthermore, the ash content of coal does affect the Char-NOx concentration, which decreases with the particle size. The results of this study suggest that an air-staged system can be useful to reduce the NOx emissions of high-ash coal and that control of the air stoichiometric ratio of the primary combustion zone (SR1) is effective for reducing NOx emissions, especially by considering unburned carbon contents.

  • Purpose: Particle beam therapy is advantageous over photon therapy. However, adequately delivering therapeutic doses to tumors near critical organs is difficult. Nanoparticle-aided radiation therapy can be used to alleviate this problem, wherein nanoparticles can passively accumulate at higher concentrations in the tumor tissue compared to the surrounding normal tissue. In this study, we investigate the dose enhancement effect due to gold nanoparticle (GNP) when Carbon-12, He-4, and proton beams are irradiated on GNP. Methods: First, monoenergetic Carbon-12 and He-4 ion beams of energy of 283.33 MeV/u and 150 MeV/u, respectively, and a proton beam of energy of 150 MeV were irradiated on a water phantom of dimensions 30 cm×30 cm×30 cm. Subsequently, the secondary-particle information generated near the Bragg peak was recorded in a phase-space (phsp) file. Second, the obtained phsp file was scaled down to a nanometer scale to irradiate GNP of diameter 50 nm located at the center of a 4 ㎛×4 ㎛×4 ㎛ water phantom. The dose enhancement ratio (DER) was calculated in intervals of 1 nm from the GNP surface. Results: The DER of GNP computed at 1 nm from the GNP surface was 4.70, 4.86, and 4.89 for Carbon-12, He-4, and proton beams, respectively; the DER decreased rapidly with increasing distance from the GNP surface. Conclusions: The results indicated that GNP can be used as radiosensitizers in particle beam therapy. Furthermore, the dose enhancement effect of the GNP absorbed by tumor cells can aid in delivering higher therapeutic doses.

  • We experimented with the particle-settling velocity and CHCl3 absorption efficiency of seven activated-carbon and analyzed seven heavy metal contents by elution for application to the field treatment of sunken HNS on the marine seabed. The mean particle-settling velocity was in the range 0.5-8 cm/s, except when the 8-20 mesh was used. The larger the HNS particle, the faster the particle-settling velocity was, and the CHCl3 absorption efficiency increased considerably owing to the larger surface area. In addition, the elution test results showed that the total Zn and As contents in >100-meshed activated carbon was higher than the contents criteria for the standard for water-treatment agents, and Cr, Zn, and As were released at higher concentrations than those released by other activated-carbon groups. Taken together, the CHCl3 absorption efficiency, settling velocity, and elution test results suggested that the 20-60, 20-40, and 2mm&down mesh activated-carbon adsorbents could be applied to the field treatment of HNSs and that the minimum required amount for field treatment were 0.82, 0.90, and 1.28 ton/㎘, respectively, as calculated based on the HNS-adsorption-capacity priority.

  • Generally, classifiers have been used as machines to crush raw materials and classify suitable particle sizes in all industrial fields, such as food, chemical, and mineral. However, the technique for classifying micron-sized particles between 5 and $20{\mu}m$ is inferior. In particular, numerous experiments and considerable experiences are required to predict the particle size, because the classifier particle size is determined according to the internal flow. However, it is quite difficult to set the driving conditions so that the desired particle size can be classified only by experience and experimentation. Therefore, this study proposes a method of predicting the average particle size by employing multiphase flow analysis and the Taguchi method; this method is subsequently verified.
