  • There is a worldwide interest in the development and commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells [PEMFCs] for vehicular and stationary applications. One of the major objectives is the reduction of loaded electrode materials, which is comprise of the Pt-based noble metals. In this paper, a novel chemical strategy is described for the preparation and characterization of carbon-supported and surface-alloys, which were prepared by using a successive reduction process. After preparing Au colloid nanoparticles, the supporting of Au colloid nanoparticles occurred spontaneously in the carbon black-dispersed aqueous solution. Then nano-scaled active materials were formed on the surface of carbon-supported Au nanoparticles. The structural and electrochemical analyses indicate that the active materials were deposited on the surface of Au nanoparticles selectively and that an alloying process occurred during the successive reducing process. The carbon-supported & surface-alloys showed the higher electrocatalytic activity than those of the particle-alloys and commercial one [Johnson-Matthey] for the reaction of methanol and formic acid oxidation. The increased electrocatalytic activity might be attributed to the effective surface structure of surface-alloys, which have a high utilization of active materials for the surface reaction of electrode.

  • The importance of waste treatments is increasing because of the lack of resources and environmental problems resulted from economic growth policy. Especially, the pollutant dust which is one of the wastes should be treated considerately because it could cause secondary damages on the human health as well as environmental systems. Recently, massive amount of coal fly-ash is being produced in thermoelectric power plants. In this study, we compared two general methods used in estimating the amount of unburned carbon in fly-ashes to categorize the coal fly-ashes into several groups following their carbon contents. One is the "loss on ignition(KS L 5405) method" which estimates the change of mass after combustion, and it is generally used. Another one is measuring $CO_2$ gas content by burning solid carbon in the fly-ash, and it is called "$CO_2$ analysis method."

  • For the manufacture of low resistance Si-SiC composite, the properties of reaction sintering in the green body of various mixed ${\alpha}$-SiC powder size with the various carbon contents from 0wt% to 20wt% were investigated. The samples preparation was green body by CIP method under this condition, molten silicon infiltration process was conducted to reaction bonded silicon carbide. the results of sintered density, 3-point bending strength and resistance of analysis showed that varied carbon and silicon melt reacted to convert to fine ${\beta}$-SiC particle and the structure was changed to dense material. The amount of fine ${\beta}$-SiC particle was gradually increased as carbon content increase. According to mixed composite, it's mechanical and specific resistivity properties was strongly influenced by carbon content within 10wt% more then carbon content 10wt% was strongly influenced by phase transition.

  • Cu/carbon nano-particle hybrids were fabricated through the cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process. CNT and CNF nano-particles were modified to give positive charges by polyethyleneimine (PEI) treatment before depositing them on the substrate. Since a Cu plate was used as an anode in the EPD process, Cu particles were also deposited along with the carbon nano-particles. Experimental observation showed the nano-hybrids constructed a novel formicary-like nano-structure which is strong and highly conductive. Utilizing the hybrids, carbon fiber composites were manufactured, and their electrical conductivity and interlaminar shear strength were measured. In addition, the deposition morphology and failure surface were examined by SEM observations. Results demonstrated that the electrical conductivities in the through-the-thickness direction and the interlaminar shear strength significantly increased by 350~2100% and 14%, respectively.

  • For the preparation of carbon-slurry fuel, the effects of process parameters on the carbon dispersion stability in the liquid fuel have been investigated. The dispersion stability of carbon-slurry fuels could be monitored by measurements of particle size and carbon contents in the different positions, and observation of dispersion states after centrifuging. Through the application of various additives, it was found that NB463S84 based on polyolefin succinimde showed the best dispersion and longest stability life of carbon-slurry fuel. Also, PIBSI (polyisobutenyl succimide) with the similar functional groups to NB463S84 was effectively synthesized and same dispersion stability was verified by application to carbon-slurry fuel. Finally, the possibility of practical use of carbon-slurry fuels was confirmed by application of the mixing conditions obtained from g scale to kg scale preparation.

  • Background: Carbon ion therapy has achieved satisfactory results. However, patients have a risk to get a secondary cancer. In order to estimate the risk, it is essential to understand particle transportation and nuclear reactions in the patient's body. The particle transport Monte Carlo simulation code is a useful tool to understand them. Since the code validation for heavy ion incident reactions is not enough, the experimental data of the elementary reaction processes are needed. Materials and Methods: We measured neutron production double-differential cross-sections (DDXs) on a carbon bombarded with 430 MeV/nucleon carbon beam at PH2 beam line of HIMAC facility in NIRS. Neutrons produced in the target were measured with NE213 liquid organic scintillators located at six angles of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and $90^{\circ}$. Results and Discussion: Neutron production double-differential cross-sections for carbon bombarded with 430 MeV/nucleon carbon ions were measured by the time-of-flight method with NE213 liquid organic scintillators at six angles of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and $90^{\circ}$. The cross sections were obtained from 1 MeV to several hundred MeV. The experimental data were compared with calculated results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation codes PHITS, Geant4, and FLUKA. Conclusion: PHITS was able to reproduce neutron production for elementary processes of carbon-carbon reaction precisely the best of three codes.

  • In this study, we synthesized pH-controlled resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels through the polymerization of two starting materials: resorcinol and formaldehyde. The prepared RF gels were dried using an acetone substitution method, and they were subsequently carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere to obtain carbon xerogels (CX_Y) prepared at different pH (Y). The carbon xerogels were utilized as active materials for coin-type organic supercapacitor electrodes to investigate the influence of pH on the electrochemical properties of the carbon xerogels. The carbon xerogels prepared at lower pH (CX_9.5 and CX_10) exhibited sufficient particle growth, with a three-dimensional network of particles during the RF gel formation, resulting in the development of abundant mesopores. Conversely, the carbon xerogels prepared at higher pH (CX_11 and CX_12) retained densely packed structures of small particles, leading to pore collapse and low specific surface areas. Consequently, CX_9.5 and CX_10 showed high specific surface areas, and provided ample adsorption sites for the formation of electric double layers with electrolyte ions. Moreover, the three-dimensional particle network in CX_9.5 and CX_10 significantly enhanced electrical conductivity. The presence of well-developed mesopores in these materials further facilitated the effective transport of electrolyte ions, contributing to their superior performance as organic supercapacitor electrodes. This study confirmed that pH-controlled carbon xerogels are one of the promising active materials for organic supercapacitor electrodes. Furthermore, we concluded that pH during RF gel formation is a crucial factor determining the electrode performance of the carbon xerogels, highlighting the need for precise pH control to obtain high-performance carbon xerogel electrodes.

  • This article reports the drag reduction phenomenon of aqueous suspensions containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) flowing through horizontal tubes. Stable nanofluids were prepared by using a surfactant. It is found that the drag forces of CNT nanofluids were reduced at specific flow conditions compared to the base fluid. It is found that the friction factor of CNT nanofluids was reduced up to approximately 30 % by using CNT nanofluids. Increased kinematic viscosities of CNT nanofluids are suggested to the key factors that cause the drag reduction phenomenon. In addition, transition from laminar to turbulent flow is observed to be delayed when CNT nanofluids flow in a horizontal tube, meaning that drag reduction occurs at higher flow rates, that is, at higher Reynolds numbers.
