  • Our study is to search for tribological properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films as known as anti- wear hard thin film on various polymers. This report deals with the deposition of DLC films on various polymer substrates in vacuum by magnetron radio frequency (RF) sputtering method with using argon plasma and graphite, titanium target. The properties of friction and wear are measured using a ball-on-disk wear -testing machine. The properties of friction and wear have been remarkably improved by DLC coating. Moreover the composition of DLC films has been analyzed by using auger electron spectroscopy(AES). The wear rate of titanium-containing DLC film is lower than that of no-metal-containing DLC film.

  • In this paper, we propose non-soldered current lead was introduced which has low contact resistivity for fault current limiters of YBCO film. Carbon/Cu has good thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and chemically stable, and so forth. Therefore it seems to be suitable material of current lead for current limiters of YBCO film. We have investigated electric field-current in field of 0-130 mT and quench characteristics of a YBCO film. Experimental results show that characteristics of transport is all right using Carbon/Cu-current lead.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are deposited at room temperature using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. The influence of negative bias voltage (applied to the substrate from 0 to -250V) on the $sp^3$ hybridized carbon fraction is examined by Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for C 1s core peak. For the first time, depth profile of C 1s, Si 2p, and O 1s XPS peaks for the deposited DLC film are obtained. DLC film is modeled as a multilayered structure. composing of surface, bulk, and interface. In addition, the x-ray reflectivity (XRR) is proposed as a method for estimating the density, surface roughness, and thickness of each layer constituting the DLC film. The estimated thickness of DLC film is in good agreement with the result obtained from the transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurement.

  • Electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were studied. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned IN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for I min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved.

  • The film is prepared by electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECRCVD) employing CH$_4$ and H$_2$ gases. It is deposited by the control of microwave plasma power, gas flow ratio, deposition pressure, and In-situ thermal treatment temperature. The structure of a-C:H (hydrogenated amorphous carbon) thin film is analysed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The fraction sp$^3$ versus sp$^2$ bonding is very important to clear up the surface and interrace of a-C:H film properties such as nano-scale friction behavior. The sp$^3$ versus sp$^2$ bonding of a-C:H thin film is dependent on the deposition conditions, therefore. nano-scale friction behavior is dependent on the deposition conditions.

  • We fabricated the conventional silicon tips coated with a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film. The DLC films are prepared by the filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. With increasing nitrogen content in DLC film, the work function($\phi$) and the turn-on voltage decrease and the emission current increases. This phenomenon is due to the fact that the Fermi-level moves to the conduction band by increasing nitrogen doping concentration. We have tested on the stability of the DLC film coated silicon tip during 2 hours at 500V.

  • A poly(methyl red) film-modified glassy carbon electrode (PMRE) was fabricated for determination of norfloxacin (NFX). The electrochemical behavior of NFX was investigated and a well-defined oxidation peak with high sensitivity was observed at the film electrode. PMRE greatly enhanced the oxidation peak current of NFX owing to the extraordinary properties of poly(methyl red) film. Based on this, a sensitive and simple voltammetric method was developed for measurement of NFX. A sensitive linear voltammetric response for NFX was obtained in the concentration range of $1\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;-\;1\;{\times}\;10^{-4}$ mol/L and the detection limit was $1\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ mol/L using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The proposed method possessed advantages such as low detection limit, fast response, low cost and simplicity. The practical application of this new analytical method was demonstrated with NFX pharmaceuticals.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films were deposited on silicon substrates by using an RF PECVD. The hydrogen/methane ratio was varied from 50% to 88% to study the effect of hytdrogen in the film on the tribological properties. The friction and wear behaviors of the deposited films were investigated by ball-on-disk type wear tester. FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the structure of the films. Tribological properties of carbon films were correlated with their structure such as ratio of "polymer-like" stretching type and that of sp2 bonding. The result showed that the annealing caused a decrease in the amount of wear of contacted $Si_3N_4$ balls and a increase in the coefficient of friction. Possible explanation for annealing effect was discussed by the hydrogen desorption.esorption.

  • Crystalline carbon nitride films were attempted for an application of humidity sensors. The films were deposited on $Al_2$O$_3$substrate having intermigrated electrodes by reactive rf magnetron sputtering system. The film revealed a good humidity-resistance characteristics as well as humidity-capacitance ones in the humidity range of 10∼95 RH(%). Temperature dependence was also investigated. These results suggest that the carbon nitride film has a possibility for new humidity-sensitive material.
