  • To develop flexible electrode materials for wearable devices, we investigated the electrochemical characteristics of carbon fibers tow according to pretreatment. And an electrochemical non-enzymatic sensor was fabricated using glucose as a target. The carbon fibers tow was pretreated through desizing and activation processes, and activation was performed in two ways: chemical oxidation and electrochemical oxidation. Surface morphology of carbon fibers tow samples was observed by SEM and their electrochemical characteristics and sensing performance were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. Carbon fibers tow samples showed improved electrochemical properties such as reduced Ret, ΔEp, and increased Ip through pretreatment. And similar electrochemical properties were obtained with both activation methods. We selected electrochemically activated carbon fibers tow as the final electrode material for application of electrochemical sensor. The non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on this electrode has an enhanced sensitivity of 0.744 A/mM (in a linear range of 0.09899~3.75423 mM) and 0.330 mA/mM (3.75423~50 mM), respectively. Through this study, the possibility of using carbon fibers tow was confirmed as an electrode material. It is expected to be used as basic research for development of high-performance flexible electrode materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to prepare a high-strength Fiberglass Reinforced Metal (FRM). Aluminum covering over carbon fibers (CF) was made to increase their wettability to molten aluminum. A cylindrical sputtering apparatus was used for the covering. One tow of carbon fibers was placed along the central axis of the cylindrical target. Aluminum was uniformly coated around the carbon fiber tow. But in case of CF without sizing treatment, aluminum spread into the inside of the tow. Preforms of carbon fiber/aluminum composite were made by impregnating carbon fiber with molten aluminum. Contact angle of molten aluminum to the aluminum-coated carbon fiber was about $30^{\circ}$. The fractured section of preform was observed by SEM, which showed that molten aluminum wetted the outer part of the tow well but had not penetrated into the center, and that adhesion between CF and aluminum matrix was in good condition.

  • A polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based carbon fiber tow was heat-treated by directly passing electric current through the tow. The effects of the stretching stress applied during high temperature heat-treatment of PAN-based carbon fibers were investigated by measuring the electric resistance changes taking place during the internal resistance heating. The structure parameters characterizing the stacks of carbon layer, such as interlayer spacing, sizes and orientation of the carbon fibers heat-treated with hot-stretching were evaluated as a function of surface temperature of tow during heat treatment in the range of $1000~2400^{\circ}C$. Though the layer extent in the fiber axis direction depends strongly on the electric resistance, the changes in a crystallite parameter is independent of the longitudinal strain.

  • The carbon fiber has been damaged via tow spreading process for carbon fiber spread tow. The fiber damage is caused by friction between equipment and fibers or between fibers and fibers in the process of spreading. As a result, mechanical properties are decreased due to differences in process via material and equipment condition. Therefore, minimizing fiber damage have to be considered in the process. In this study, the change in carbon fiber pneumatic spreading process was observed by according to the filament count, sizing content of carbon fiber and process variables in spreading equipment (fiber tension at the beginning, air temperature in spreading zone, vacuum pressure in spreading zone). Tensile strength was evaluated using samples prepared under optimal conditions for each of the carbon fiber varieties, and mechanical properties were reduced due to damage on the carbon fiber.

  • This study is about the fabrication of a flexible electrode based on PAN-based carbon fibers tow using organic/inorganic nanocomposite and its application of non-enzymatic sensor. The organic/inorganic nanocomposite was composed of the conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI) and the metal oxide CuO. And glucose was used as the target of the electrochemical sensor. Commercialized CFTs were pretreated through heat treatment for desizing and electrochemical oxidation for activation. This nanocomposite was sequentially synthesized on the pretreated CFT surface using electrochemical polymerization and electrochemical deposition. Finally, the CFT/PANI/CuO NPs electrode was obtained. The electrochemical properties and sensing performance of the CFT/PANI/CuO NPs electrode were analyzed using chronoamperometry (CA), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The sensitivity of the CFT/PANI/CuO NPs electrode was about 8.352 mA/mM (in a linear range of 0.445~6.674 mM) and 3.369 mA/mM (in a linear range of 6.674~50 mM), respectively. So, the CFT/PANI/CuO NPs electrode exhibited the enhanced sensing performances due to unique properties such as small peak potential separation, low electron transfer resistance, and large specific surface area.

  • General purpose PAN-based carbon fibers were heat treated up to $1500^{\circ}C$, and analyzed their carbon contents, crstallinity, and crystalline size(Lc). Exothermic characteristics of carbon fiber were investigated in relation to crystallinity, and crystalline size(Lc). Carbon contents, crystallinities, and crystalline size(Lc) of PAN-based carbon fibers increased from 37.08 to 53.69%, and 1.62 to 1.82 nm, respectively as the increase of heat treatment temperature from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1500^{\circ}C$. Initial surface temperature of fiber tow also linearly increased as the increase of crystallinity, and crystalline size(Lc). Therefore, the crystallinity and crystal size(Lc) of carbon fibers can indirectly and rapidly be estimated by measuring the surface temperature increase.

  • In composites manufacturing, increasing resin impregnation is a key way to speed up the manufacturing process and improve product quality. While resin improvement is important, simple fiber surface treatments can also improve resin flowability. In this study, different plasma treatment times were applied to carbon fiber fabrics to improve the impregnation between resin and fiber. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to evaluate the dispersion of resin in the fibers, which changed with plasma treatment. The effect of fiber surface treatment on resin spreadability could be observed in real time. When inserting a carbon fiber tow into the resin, the amount of resin that soaked into the tow was measured to objectively compare resin impregnation. Five minutes of plasma treatment improved the tensile and compressive strength of the composite by more than 50%, while reducing the void content and increasing the fire point impregnation flow rate. Finally, a dynamic flexural fatigue test was conducted using a portion of the composite used as an architectural composite part, and the composite part did not fail after one million cycles of a 3 kN load.
