Recently, (terahertz ray) applications have emerged as one of the most promising new powerful nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. In this study, a new T-ray time-domain spectroscopy system was utilized for detecting and evaluating layup effect and flaw in FRP composite laminates. Extensive experimental measurements in reflection and thru-transmission modes were made to map out the T-ray images. Especially this was demonstrated in thick GFRP laminates containing double saw slots. In carbon composites the penetration of terahertz waves is limited to some degree and the detection of flaws is strongly affected by the angle between the electric field(E-field) vector of the terahertz waves and the intervening fiber directions. The artificial defects investigated by terahertz waves were bonded foreign material, simulated disbond and delamination and mechanical impact damage. The effectiveness and limitations of terahertz radiation for the NDE of composites are discussed.

The $0.3Li_2MnO_3{\cdot}0.7LiMn_{0.55}Ni_{0.30}Co_{0.15}O_2$ cathode material was prepared via a co-precipitation method. The vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) was used as a conductive material and its effects on electrochemical properties of the $0.3Li_2MnO_3{\cdot}0.7LiMn_{0.55}Ni_{0.30}Co_{0.15}O_2$ cathode material were investigated. From the XRD pattern, the typical complex layered structure was confirmed and a solid solution between $Li_2MnO_3$ and $LiMO_2$ (M = Ni, Co and Mn) was formed without any secondary phases. The VGCF was properly distributed between cathode materials and conductive sources by a FE-SEM. In voltage profiles, the electrode with VGCF showed higher discharge capacity than the pristine electrode. At a 5C rate, 146 mAh/g was obtained compared with 232 mAh/g at initial discharge in the electrode with VGCF. Furthermore, the impedance of the electrode with VGCF did not changed much around $9-10{\Omega}$ while the pristine electrode increased from 21.5${\Omega}$ to $46.3{\Omega}$ after the $30^{th}$ charge/discharge cycling.

The thermal balance test in vacuum chamber for satellite structures is an essential step in the process of satellite development. However, it is technically and economically difficult to fully replicate the space environment by using the vacuum chamber. To overcome these limitations, the thermal analysis through a computer simulation technique has been conducted. The CFRP composite material has attracted attention as satellite structures since it has advantages of excellent mechanical properties and light weight. However, the nonuniform nature of the thermal conductivity of the CFRP structure should be noted at the step of thermal analysis of the satellite. Two different approaches are studied for the thermal analyses; a detailed numerical modeling and a simplified model expressed by an effective thermal conductivity. In this paper, the effective thermal conductivities of the CFRP composite structures are extracted from the detailed numerical results to provide a practical thermal design data for the satellite fabricated with the CFRP composite structure. Calculation results of the surface temperature and the thermal conductivities along x, y, z directions show fairly good agreements between the detailed modeling and the simplified model for all the cases studied here.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) cuts metal by discharging electric current across a thin gap between tool and workpiece. Electrical discharge wire cutting, a special form of EDM, uses a continuously moving conductive wire as an electrode, and is widely used for the manufacture of punches, dies and stripper plates. In the wire cutting process, the moving wire is usually supported by cantilever arm and wire guides. As the wire traveling speed has been increased in recent years to improve productivity, the vibration of the cantilever arm occurs, which reduces the positional accuracy of the machine. Therefore, the design and manufacture of the cantilever arm with high dynamic characteristics have become important as the machining speed increases. In this paper, the cantilever arm for guiding the moving wire was designed and manufactured using carbon fiber epoxy composite in order to improve the static and dynamic characteristics. Specimens for the composite cantilever arm were manufactured and tested to investigate the effect of the number of reinforcing plies and length fitted to steel flange on the load capacity. Also, the finite element analysis using layer and contact elements was performed to compare the calculated results with the experimental ones. From the results, the prototype of the composite cantilever arm for the electrical discharge wire cutting machine was manufactured and the static and dynamic characteristics were compared with those of the conventional steel cantilever arm.
In this paper, the bonding strengths of co-cured T800 carbon/epoxy composite-aluminum single lap joints with and without additional pressures were investigated using the pressure information induced by the fiber tension during a filament winding process. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave vacuum bag de-gassing molding being controlled forming pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa including vacuum). A special device which can act uniform additional pressures on the joining part of the single lap joint specimen was designed to measure the bonding strengths of composite-aluminum liners of type III hydrogen pressure vessel fabricated by a filament winding process. After the three different additional pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa) were applied to the specimens the effect of the additional pressures on the bonding strengths of the co-cured single-lap joints were evaluated.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Therefore, they are increasingly being use, instead of conventional metallic materials in the aviation and automobile industries, where there is a strong demand for lightweight materials. In aircraft, the fuselage is exposed to severe conditions of high temperatures and high humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the strength of CFRP composites under real conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study, CFRP specimens were immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for a long time. Then, tensile tests were performed on these specimens, and the fracture characteristics of the fractured surfaces were analyzed using SEM. A fatigue test was performed on specimens immersed for 300 days with R=0.1, and it was confirmed that the fatigue life deteriorated in immersed specimens compared to specimens that were not immersed.

Beam-column joints are recognized as the weak points of reinforcement concrete frames. The ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) frames during severe earthquakes can be measured through the dissipation of large energy in beam-column joint. Retrofitting and rehabilitating structures through proper methods, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), are required to prevent casualties that result from the collapse of earthquake-damaged structures. The main challenge of this issue is identifying the effect of CFRP on the occurrence of failure in the joint of a cross section with normal ductility. The present study evaluates the retrofitting method for a normal ductile beam-column joint using CFRP under monotonic and cyclic loads. Thus, the finite element model of a cross section with normal ductility and made of RC is developed, and CFRP is used to retrofit the joints. This study considers three beam-column joints: one with partial CFRP wrapping, one with full CFRP wrapping, and one with normal ductility. The two cases with partial and full CFRP wrapping in the beam-column joints are used to determine the effect of retrofitting with CFRP wrapping sheets on the behavior of the beam-column joint confined by such sheets. All the models are subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The final capacity and hysteretic results of the dynamic analysis are investigated. A comparison of the dissipation energy graphs of the three connections shows significant enhancement in the models with partial and full CFRP wrapping. An analysis of the load-displacement curves indicates that the stiffness of the specimens is enhanced by CFRP sheets. However, the models with both partial and full CFRP wrapping exhibited no considerable improvement in terms of energy dissipation and stiffness.
Fundamental failure mode in a laminated composite pinned-joint is proposed to assess damage resulting from stress concentration in the plate. The joint area is a region with stress concentrations thus a complicated stress state exists. The modeling of damage in a laminated composite pinned-joint presents many difficulties because of the complexity of the failure process. In order to model progressive from initial to final, finite element methods are used rather than closed form stress analyses. Failure analysis must be a logical combination of suitable failure criteria and appropriate material properties degradation rules. In this study, the material properties which were obtained in previous study, the preparing process of the bearing strength test for a pinned joint CFRP composite plate subjected to in-plane loading at low temperature, and the FEM result of progressive damage model using ANSYS program are summarized to assess the structural safety of CFRP plate used in the magnetic supporting post of KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research).
The paper relics excavated from the 4th excavation of the historical spot No.259 Seonwon temple area were analyzed and conserved. Because these works remained folded, the most important conservation treatment was a separation. This process depended on the state of the works: dry state works were separated using Gore-Tex chamber and the filtrated water, wet state works were separated through vacuum freeze drying method. Analyses of the paper relics performed were examination on the paper to find its distinction, binocular microscope and SEM on fiber, and XRF on character ingredient. This study presumed the times though $C^{14}$ dating of these works. The works were able to be classified through analysis and conservation treatment. This separation made lost part of the works conserve an archetype. This study presented the application of conservation methods on the paper relics which are in the bad condition and obtained information through carbon dating of it.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.
