Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has strong and superb material properties, especially in mechanical and heat-resisting aspects, but the drawback is its high price. In this study, we made a hybrid composite using carbon fiber and basalt fiber, which is expected to attribute to its strong material properties and its financial benefits. We found out that the higher the content of basalt fiber included, the lower the intensity, and carbon's intensity contents of 80% showed the similar intensity level as that of CFRP. Besides it was possible to get a better mechanical properties using the composite that included the mixed fiber, instead of using a composition of separate fibers filed.
The effects of fiber surface-treatment and sizing on the dynamic mechanical properties of unidirectional and 2-directional carbon fiber/nylon 6 composites by means of dynamic mechanical analysis have been investigated in the present study. The interlaminar shear strengths of 2-directional carbon/nylon 6 composites sized with various thermosetting and thermoplastic resins are also measured using a short-beam shear test method. The result suggests that different surface-treatment levels onto carbon fibers may influence the storage modulus and tan ${\delta}$ behavior of carbon/nylon 6 composites, reflecting somewhat change of the stiffness and the interfacial adhesion of the composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and short-beam shear test results indicate that appropriate use of a sizing material upon carbon fiber composite processing may contribute to enhancing the interfacial and/or interlaminar properties of woven carbon fabric/nylon 6 composites, depending on their resin characteristics and processing temperature.

[ $Si_3N_4$ ] composites have been extensively studied for engineering ceramics, because it has excellent room and high temperature strength, wear resistance properties, good resistance to oxidation, and good thermal and chemical stability. In the present work, carbon short fiber reinforced $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were fabricated by hot press method in $N_2$ atmosphere at $1800^{\circ}C$ using $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives. Content of carbon short fiber was $0\%,\;0.1\%\;and\;0.3\%$. The composites were evaluated in terms of density, flexural strength and elastic modulus through the 3-point bending test at room temperature. Also, The wear behavior was determined by the pin on disk wear tester using silicon nitride ball. Experimental density and flexural strength decreased with increasing content of carbon fiber. But specific modulus increased with increasing content of carbon fiber. In addition, friction coefficient and specific wear loss decreased with increasing content of carbon short fiber by reason of interfacial defects between matrix and fiber.
In this study, carbon fiber reinforced cement composites(CFRCs) reinforced with short noncircular type carbon fibers were fabricated and properties(drying shrinkage, resistance to freezing and thawing, and fracture toughness) were compared with those of the CFRCs reinforced with circular type carbon fibers. It was found that these properties greatly depended on the shape and length of carbon fibers. The drying shrinkage of CFRCs reinforced with C-type carbon fiber was superior to other CFRCs. This effect was increased with a high aspect ratio of fiber. The resistance to freezing and thawing was increased with the fiber length and fiber volume percent, but there was on remarkable effect to fiber shape. Fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation of CFRCs reinforced with C-CFs were improved compared with other CFRCs. It was believed that the more absorption of fracture energy into the larger interface caused an increase in fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation.

Epoxy/carbon composite was used to prepare a bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Phenol novolac-type epoxy and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)-type epoxy mixture was used as a matrix and graphite powder, carbon fiber (CF) and graphite fiber (GF) were used as carbon materials. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the bipolar plate, surface-modified CF was incorporated into the epoxy/carbon composite. To determine the cure temperature of the epoxy mixture, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was performed and the data were introduced to Kissinger equation in order to get reaction activation energy and pre-exponential factor. Tensile and flexural strength was obtained by using universal testing machine (UTM). The surface morphology of the fractured specimen and the interfacial morphology between epoxy matrix and CF or GF were observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
In this study, we tried to prepare an isotropic spinnable pitch which can be useful to prepare the general purpose carbon fiber through the co-carbonization of biomass tar with ethylene bottom oil under two different preparation methods (atmospheric distillation, pressurized distillation). The results showed that the ethylene bottom oil added co-carbonization was very effective to decrease of the oxygen contents for obtaining a stable spinnable pitch. The pressurized distillation was more effective to reduce the oxygen functional groups of pitches than atmospheric distillation. The obtained spinnable pitch by the pressurized distillation showed higher pitch yield of 42% and lower oxygen content of 9.12% than the spinnable pitch by the atmospheric distillation. The carbon fiber derived from the pressurized distillation spinnable pitch by carbonization at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min showed that the higher tensile strength of carbon fiber was increased up to 800 MPa.
In order to efficiently control the heat generation of electronic devices, many research has been conducted on thermally conductive composite materials. In this study, milled carbon fiber was dispersed in four solvent to investigate the relationship of carbon fiber alignment according to dispersion by solvents, and carbon fiberreinforced composite material(CFRP) was manufactured using vacuum filtration. To evaluate the arrangement of CFRP the arrangement of the prepared specimen was observed under an optical microscope, and thermal conductivity was measured by Laser Flash Analysis. The Through-plane thermal conductivity of CFRP using NMP and Ethanol was 10.79 W/mK and 10.57 W/mK respectively, which were improved by 218% and 209% compared to the In-plane thermal conductivity. The high viscosity of the solvent greatly affects the shear of the fluid, and it seemed to determine the alignment of the filler.
Carbon woven fabric/C/SiC composites were fabricated by multiple impregnations of carbon woven fabric/carbon preform with the polymer precursor of SiC, i.e., polycarbosilane. In addition, two kinds of low density carbon/carbon preforms which had different fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation, i.e., a carbon woven fabric(${\thickapprox}$55 vol%)/carbon and a chopped carbon fiber${\thickapprox}$40 vol%)/carbon composites, were reaction-bonded with a silicon melt at 1$700^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum to fabricate dense carbon fiber/Si/SiC composites. The reaction-bonding process increased the density to ~2.1 g/$cm^3$ from 1.6 g/$cm^3$ and 1.15 g/$cm^3$ of a carbon woven and a chopped carbon preforms, respectively. All of the composites fractured with extensive fiber pull-out. The higher the density the higher the stiffness and proportional limit stress. The mechanical properties obtained from a three-point bend and tension tests were compared. The ratios of the peak tensile stresses to the bending strengths of a carbon woven and a chopped carbon composites were about one-third, respectively. The carbon woven fabric/Si/SiC composites with density of 2.06 g/$cm^3$ showed ~120 MPa of ultimate strength and ~80 MPa of proportional limit in bend testing.

For effective applicability of reinforced cork, cork composites reinforced with metal, glass fiber, and carbon fiber were developed, and the effects of the reinforcing materials on the mechanical properties of cork composites were investigated. The bending moduli of elasticity (MOE) of cork composites were in the 32.7-35.9 MPa range, while the bending strength values were in the 1.62-1.73 MPa range. The strength performance decreased in the order cork-metal > cork-carbon fiber > cork-glass fiber. The bending MOEs were improved by 29%-41% compared with simple cork boards, while the bending strengths of reinforced cork were 35%-45% higher. The strength performance significantly improved following the incorporation of thin mesh materials into the middle layer of the studied cork composites. The bending strains of the cork composites were remarkably higher compared with oak wood, making them promising for applications that require bending processing, such as curved jointing. The internal bond strengths of the cork composites were 0.26-0.44 MPa, approximately 0.36-0.60 times lower compared with medium-density fiber boards.

Advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber, aramid, and glass fiber sheet, are widely used recently to strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of concrete compressive members confined with carbon fiber sheet and evaluate the efficiency of the strengthening under load actions. Uniaxal compression tests of concrete compressive members confined with carbon fiber sheet were experimentally used to develop a relationship between the axial stresses and the lateral stresses. The resulting axial and lateral strains were used to determine the confinement effect of concrete compressive members.
