Our study focuses on upgrading real biogas obtained under Indian scenario using carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology to remove carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and utilize it by forming metal carbonate. Amines such as monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used to rapidly convert gaseous $CO_2$ to aqueous $CO_2$, and $BaCl_2$ was used as an additive to react with the aqueous $CO_2$ and rapidly precipitating the aqueous $CO_2$. All experiments were conducted at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. We analyzed the characteristics of the $BaCO_3$ precipitates using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy - Energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. The precipitates exhibited witherite morphology confirmed by the XRD results, and FT-IR confirmed that the metal salt formed was $BaCO_3$, and EDS showed that there were no traces of impurities present in it. The quantity of the $BaCO_3$ was larger when formed with DEA. Also, a comparison was done with a previous study of ours conducted in Korean conditions. Finally, we observed that the carbonate obtained using real biogas showed similar properties to carbonates available in the market. An economic analysis was done to show the cost effectiveness of the method employed by us.

Cold bed and $30kW_{th}$ pilot bed tests using circulating fluidized bed (CFB) were conducted to apply oxy-fuel technology for waste sludge combustion as a carbon capture and storage technology. In cold bed test, the minimum fluidization velocity ($u_{mf}$) and superficial velocity for fast fluidization was determined as 0.120 m/s and 2.5 m/s, respectively. In the pilot test, air and oxy-fuel combustion experiments for waste sludge were conducted using CFB unit. The flue-gas temperature in 21~25% oxy-fuel combustion was higher than that of air and up to 30% oxy-fuel combustion. In addition, the concentration of carbon dioxide was more than 80% with the oxygen injection range from 21% to 25% in oxy-fuel CFB waste sludge combustion.
This study was performed to develop a method for quantitative analysis obtaining the amount of calcium carbonate minerals formed when Ca salts biomimetically reacted with carbon dioxide. There were two methods compared; 1) volumetric calcimeter method that determining the amount of released carbon dioxide after calcium carbonate minerals were acidified by 4N HCl and 2) Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG-DTA) adopting differential decomposition temperature breaking-up the structural link within calcium carbonate minerals. The comparisons were made by batch experiment (i.e., biocalcification process) along with control (i.e., nominal concentration of $CaCO_3$ prepared). For the control, TG-DTA took a minor root mean square deviation (RMSD) of 1.1~5.9 mg, whereas volumetric calcimeter exposed a greater RMSD of 28.3 mg. For the biocalcification, the amount of $CaCO_3$ was more precisely obtained for TG-DTA rather than that of volumetric calcimeter. It was decided that TG-DTA was more successfully used for quantitative analysis to observe the amount of calcium carbonate minerals derived from biocalcification.

In this study, the applicability of CCMs (Carbondioxide conversion capture materials) manufactured by reacting carbon dioxide gas with DG (Desulfurization gypsum) as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products were evaluated and the basic physical properties of CCMs-mixed mortar and concrete specimens were measured to derive the optimal mixing ratio. The main chemical oxides of CCMs were CaO and SO3, and the main crystalline phases were CaSO4·2H2O, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, and CaSO4. In addition, by the results of particle size analysis and heavy metal measurement, the applicability of CCMs as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products was confirmed. As a result of measuring the strength behavior using mortar and concrete specimens with CCMs, the compressive and flexural strength decreased as the mix ratio of CCMs increased, but requirements by the standards for interlocking blocks and retaining wall blocks, which are target products in this study, were satisfied up to the optimal mixing ratio of 10 wt.% substitution. Therefore, its applicability as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products was confirmed.
The objective of this study is to investigate biogeochemical processes to sequester $CO_2$and metals utilizing metal-rich fly ash (MRFA). Microbial conversion of $CO_2$into sparingly soluble carbonate minerals has been studied using MRFA under different $pCO_2$and different bicarbonate concentrations. Scaling from test tube to fermentation vessels (up to 4-L) using metal-reducing bacteria and MRFA has proved successful at sequestering carbon dioxide and metals. $CO_2$sequestration via precipitation processes using MRFA may complement the process of $CO_2$capture from fossil fuel plants while potentially stabilizing fly ash wastes.
In the power generation industry, various efforts are needed to cope with tightening regulation on carbon dioxide emission. Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is a relatively environmentally friendly power generation method using coal. Moreover, pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture is possible in the IGCC system. Therefore, much effort is being made to develop advanced IGCC systems. However, removal of $CO_2$ prior to the gas turbine may affect the system performance and operation because the fuel flow, which is supplied to the gas turbine, is reduced in comparison with normal IGCC plants. This study predicts, through a parametric analysis, system performances of both an IGCC plant using normal syngas and a plant with $CO_2$ capture. Performance characteristics are compared and influence of $CO_2$ capture is discussed. By removing $CO_2$ from the syngas, the heating value of the fuel increases, and thus the required fuel flow to the gas turbine is reduced. The resulting reduction in turbine flow lowers the compressor pressure ratio, which alleviates the compressor surge problem. The performance of the bottoming cycle is not influenced much.
Oxidative and thermal degradation of alkanolamines for a promising $CO_2$ capture technology of absorption might cause decrease in $CO_2$ capture efficiency and formation of hazardous byproducts. In this study, characteristics of a representative absorbent of monoehtanolamine (MEA) were examined for a long term operation using a laboratory scale absorption system. An $CO_2$ absorption system with ID 56 mm and absorption zone height 100 cm was developed for the characterization. Absorption solution of 30 wt% MEA was circulated at 100 mL/min to treat air with 15% $CO_2$ and 1 ppm NO at 10 L/min. Temperatures of absorber and stripper were maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. For the course of 5 weeks continuous operation, MEA concentration was decreased approximately by 70% and $CO_2$ removal efficiency was dropped from 95% to 65%. Ionic byproducts of $NH_4{^+}$, $NO_2{^-}$, and $NO_3{^-}$ were accumulated up to 48 g/mL, 0.2 g/mL, and 1.5 g/mL, respectively, tracking the variation of MEA concentration. Formation of various organic byproducts were also observed.

During the carbon-dioxide capture and storage(CCS) process, $CO_2$ is captured from large point source, and then injected and stored in stable geological structure for thousands and more years. Inside the captured $CO_2$ flow, various impurities, such as $N_2$, $O_2$, argon, etc, are included inevitably. These impurities affect on the CCS process on various aspects. In this study, we designed and built experimental facility to evaluate the various impurity effect on the $CO_2$ pipeline flow, and analyzed the effect of argon ratio and pressure variation on the pressure drop of $CO_2$ flow. By comparing experimental data with 4 kinds of pressure drop model, we figured out and recommended the Cicchitti's model since it showed most accurate result among compared models in this study.

In 2004, total emissions of Greenhouse Gases(GHGs) in Korea was estimated to be about 590 million metric tons, which is the world's 10th largest emissions. Considering the much amount of nation's GHG emissions and growing nation's position in the world, GHG emissions in Korea should be reduced in near future. The CO$_2$ emissions from two sub-sections of energy sector in Korea, such as thermal power plant and industry section(including manufacturing and construction industries), was about 300 million metric tons in 2004 and this is 53.3% of total GHG emissions in Korea. So, the mitigation of CO$_2$ emissions in these two section is more important and more effective to reduce the nation's total GHGs than any other fields. In addition, these two section have high potential to qualitatively and effectively apply the CCS(Carbon Capture and Storage) technologies due to the nature of their process. There are several CCS technologies applied to these two section. In short term, the chemical absorption technology using amine as a absorbent could be the most effectively used. In middle or long term, pre-combustion technology equipped with ATR(Autothermal reforming), or MSR-$H_2$(Methane steam reformer with hydrogen separation membrane reactor) unit and oxyfuel combustion such as SOFC+GT(Solid oxide fuel cell-Gas turbine) process would be the promising technologies to reduce the CO$_2$ emissions in two areas. It is expected that these advanced CCS technologies can reduce the CO$_2$ avoidance cost to $US 8.5-43.5/tCO$_2$. Using the CCS technologies, if the CO$_2$ emissions from two sub-sections of energy sector could be reduced to even 10% of total emissions, the amount of 30 million metric tons of CO$_2$ could be mitigated.
The practical way to minimize the greenhouse gas is to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. For this reason, CCS(Carbon Capture and Storage) technology, which could reduce carbon dioxide emission, has risen as a realistic alternative in recent years. In addition, the researcher is recently working into ways of applying CCS technologies with deep saline aquifer. In this study, the evaluation model on the feasibility of $CO_2$ sequestration in the deep saline aquifer using ANN(Artificial Neural Network) was developed. In order to develop the efficiency-evaluation model, basic model was created in the deep saline aquifer and sensitivity analysis was performed for the aquifer characteristics by utilizing the commercial simulator of GEM. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the factors and ranges affecting $CO_2$ sequestration in the deep saline aquifer were chosen. The result from ANN training scenario were confirmed $CO_2$ sequestration by solubility trapping and residual trapping mechanism. The result from ANN model evaluation indicated there is the increase of correlation coefficient up to 0.99. It has been confirmed that the developed model can be utilized in feasibility of $CO_2$ sequestration at deep saline aquifer.
