Two sheets of high strength cement paste using ordinary Portland cement and water soluble polymer (polyacrylamide) were made by kneading with a twin roll mill. A carbon fiber layer out between two sheet of the cement paste, and then carbon fiber reinforced high strength cement composites were prepared by pressing them. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated through the observation of the microstructure and the application of fracture mechanics. When the carbon fiber was added with 0.2 and 0.3wt% to the composites the flexural strength and Young's modulus were about 110∼116MPa and 74∼77GPa respectively, and critical stress intensity was about 3.14MPam1/2. It can be considered that the strength improvement of high strength cement fiber composites may be due to the removal of macropores and the increase of various fracture toughness effects; grain bridging, frictional interlocking, polymer fibril bridging and fiber bridging.

In this study, we developed the h-BN interphase for ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) through a wet chemical coating method, which has excellent price competitiveness and is a simple process as a departure from the existing high cost chemical vapor deposition method. The optimum condition for nitriding an h-BN interphase using boric acid and urea as precursors were derived, and the h-BN interphase coating through a wet method on a carbon preform of 2.5 D was conducted to apply the optimum conditions to the CMCs. In order to control the coating property via the wet coating method, four parameters were investigated such as dipping time of the specimen in the precursor solution, the ratio of boric acid and urea in the precursor, the concentration of solution where the precursor was dissolved, and the cycle of dipping and dry process. The CMCs was fabricated through polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) processes and a three-point flexural strength test was conducted to verify the role of the coated h-BN interphase.

In this paper, the electromechanical displacements of curved piezoelectric actuators composed of PZT ceramic and laminated composite materials are calculated based on high performance computing technology and the optimal configuration of composite curved actuator is examined. To accurately predict the local pre-stress in the device due to the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion, carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy as well as PZT ceramic are numerically modeled by using hexahedral solid elements. Because the modeling of these thin layers increases the number of degrees of freedom, large-scale structural analyses are performed through the PEGASUS supercomputer, which is installed in our laboratory. In the first stage, the curved shape of the actuator and the internal stress in each layer are obtained by the cured curvature analysis. Subsequently, the displacement due to the piezoelectric force (which is resulted from applied voltage) is also calculated. The performance of composite curved actuator is investigated by comparing the displacements obtained by the variation of thickness and elastic modulus of laminated composite layers. In order to consider the finite deformation in the first analysis stage and include the pre-stress due to curing process in the second stage, nonlinear finite element analyses are carried out.
The luxury car market has been steadily growing for the last 10 years and it might keep expanding in the future. Furthermore, it is expected to be a very competitive market because luxury cars are considred to reflect the technology level of motor companies. For this reason, it is very important for motor companies to improve performances of luxury vehicles. However, it takes years for the companies to increase the technology level for the high performances. In this paper, we aim to analyze the technologies for high quality brake perfomances through investigation of two luxury vehicle models and develop a new high performance brake system. First, we found out a variety of effective factors for the high performances. Second, we conducted the brake performance analysis to figure out the relationship between brake effort and brake feeling. Finally, we develped the new brake system using carbon ceramic composite materials to satisfy the high quality brake performances.
Multi-walled carbon nanotube (M-CNT)/Nafion nanocomposites were prepared by solution casting to elucidate the effect of M-CNT addition, from 0 to 7 wt%, on the viscoelastic behavior of the composites. The M-CNT bundles induced by the Nafion polymer were determined to be uniformly distributed for the 1 wt% M-CNT/Nafion nanocomposites. The 1 wt% M-CNT/Nafion composite exhibited the highest blocking stress of 2.3 kPa due to its high elastic modulus of 0.485 GPa. From a dynamic mechanical analysis, the 1 wt% M-CNT had the highest storage and loss moduli compared with the other samples in all frequency and temperature ranges. From the storage modulus data, the M-CNT loaded composites had similar $T_g$ values near $120^{\circ}C$. The glass transition temperatures of the M-CNT loaded composites were $120^{\circ}C$ (1 wt%), $117^{\circ}C$ (3 wt%), $117^{\circ}C$ (5 wt%), and $135^{\circ}C$ (7 wt%), suggesting that the effect of the M-CNTs on the Nafion film begins at 1 wt%. Thus, it has been concluded that the 1 wt% M-CNT disported composite is attractive for actuator applications.
We investigated the viscosity behavior and the carbon yield of coal tar pitch (CTP) treated with iodine. The viscosity of iodine treated pitch showed that the fluidity of iodine treated CTP did not increase within the iodine addition of 1.4%. DTG analysis showed that cross linking was accelerated at the temperature range from $400\;to\;500{^{\circ}C}$ with iodine treatment, which is due to the accelerated dehydrogenative reaction by iodine. The iodine treatment was mainly effective for β-resin content increase of CTP. The carbon yield of CTP increased from 40 to 60% by the iodine non-treated CTP.
Effects of additives on phase development and physico-mechanical properties of mullite-carbon was investigated. Powdered clay, kaolinite and graphite of predetermined compositions were blended with additives using ball mill for 3 hrs at 60 rev/min. Samples were produced by uniaxial compression and sintered between $1400^{\circ}C$ and $1600^{\circ}C$ for one hr. They were characterized for various properties, developed phases and microstructural features. It was observed that the properties and phase developments in the samples were influenced by the additives. 10 wt % SiC served as nucleating point for SiC around $1400^{\circ}C$. 10wt % $TiO_2$ lead to development of 2.5 wt % TiC at $1500^{\circ}C$ which increased to 6.8 wt % at $1600^{\circ}C$. Ifon clay in the sample leads to development of anorthite and microcline in the samples. 10wt % $TiO_2$ is effective as anti-oxidant for graphite up to $1500^{\circ}C$. Base on strength and absorbed energy, sample C (with 10wt % $TiO_2$) sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$ is considered to be optimum.

The characteristics of the polycarbosilane (PCS)-based composite ceramic layer was studied by controlling the curing temperature. The stress at the interface of the graphite and SiOC composite layer was evaluated v ia finite element analysis. As a result, the tensile stress was released as the carbon ratio of the SiC decreases. In experiment, the SiOC layers were coated on the VDR graphite block by dip-coating process. It was revealed that the composition of Si and C was effectively adjusted depending on the curing temperature. As the solution-based process is employed, the surface roughness was reduced for the appropriate PCS curing temperature. Hence, it is expected that the cured SiOC layer can be utilized to reduce cracking and peeling of SiC ceramic composites on graphite mold by improving the interfacial stress and surface roughness.

The piezoelectric composite film of ferroelectric PZT ceramic ($PbZr_xTi_{1-x}O_3$) and polymer (PDMS, Polydimethylsiloxane) was prepared to improve the flexibility of piezoelectric material. The bar coating method was applied to fabricate flexible nanocomposite film with large surface area by low cost process. In the case of using metal electrode on the composite film, although there is no problem by bending process, the electrode is usually broken away from the film by stretching process. However, the well-attached, flexible CNT electrode on PZT/PDMS film improved flexibility, especially stretchability. PZT particles was usually settled down into polymer matrix due to gravity of the weighty particle, so to improve the dispersion of PZT powder in polymer matrix, small amount of additives (CNT powder, Carbon nanotube powder) was physically mixed with the matrix. By stretching the film, an output voltage of PZT(70 wt%)/PDMS with CNT (0.5 wt%) was measured.
Multi-walled carbon nanotube(CNT) reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coating with a thickness of $5{\mu}m$ has been successfully deposited on Ti substrate using aerosol deposition(AD). The coating had a dense microstructure with no cracks or pores, showing good adhesion with the Ti substrate. Microstructural observation using field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) showed that CNTs with original tubular morphology were found in the hydroxyapatite-CNT(HA-CNT) composite coating. Measurements of hardness and elastic modulus for the coating were performed by nanoindentation tests, indicating that the mechanical properties of the coating were remarkably improved by the addition of CNT to HA coating. Therefore, HA-CNT composite coating produced by AD is expected to be potentially applied to the coating for high load bearing implants.
