Traditionally and generally used calcined clay was carburized, and its characteristics were studied. Carburization treatment was performed by the thermally decomposed carbon and the deposit carbon which occur in a so called 'Boudouard reaction $(2CO{\rightarrow}CO_2+C)'$ at fuel combustion process in a closed-type furnace. The color of the carburized calcine clay changed from yellow to black, and the carbon component revealed as crystalline graphite by the X-ray diffraction test. The weight of the carburized calcine clay decreased to about 4 wt.% by the 1st heating to $1400^{\circ}C$ in air but it does not decreased by the 2nd heating of the same conditions. By the carburization treatment, the water absorption changed from 13 wt.% to 6 wt.%, and the contact angle for water drop changed, too, from 0 to $87^{\circ}$ which was tested by the photograph of one minute after a water drop contact. It means the carburized calcine clay does not absorb water drop so it has a hydrophobic characteristic.
High pollutant-loading capacities (up to 319 times its own weight) are achieved by three-dimensional (3D) macroporous, slightly reduced graphene oxide (srGO) sorbents, which are prepared through ice-templating and consecutive thermal reduction. The reduction of the srGO is readily controlled by heating time under a mild condition (at 1 10−2 Torr and 200℃). The saturated sorption capacity of the hydrophilic srGO sorbent (thermally reduced for 1 h) could not be improved further even though the samples were reduced for 10 h to achieve the hydrophobic surface. The large meso- and macroporosity of the srGO sorbent, which is achieved by removing the residual water and the hydroxyl groups, is crucial for achieving the enhanced capacity. In particular, a systematic study on absorption parameters indicates that the open porosity of the 3D srGO sorbents significantly contributes to the physical loading of oils and organic solvents on the hydrophilic surface. Therefore, this study provides insight into the absorption behavior of highly macroporous graphene-based macrostructures and hence paves the way to development of promising next-generation sorbents for removal of oils and organic solvent pollutants.
Since the iron balance is maintained by regulated intestinal absorption rather than regulated excretion, there have been many reports concerning the factors which may influence the intestinal iron absorption. As the liver is the largest iron storage organ of the body, any hepatocellular damage may result in disturbances in iron metabolism, e,g., frequent co-existence of hemochromatosis and liver cirrhosis, or elevated serum iron level and increased iron absorption rate in patients with infectious hepatitis or cirrhosis. In one effort to demonstrate the influence of hepatocellular damage on intestinal iron absortion, the iron absorption rate was measured in the rabbits whose livers were injured by a single subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride (doses ranging from 0.15 to 0.5cc per kg of body weight) or by a single irradiation of 2,000 to 16,000 rads with $^{60}Co$ on the liver locally. A single oral dose of $1{\mu}Ci\;of\;^{59}Fe$-citrate with 0.5mg of ferrous citrate was fed in the fasting state, 24 hours after hepatic damage had been induced, without any reducing or chelating agents, and stool was collected for one week thereafter. Serum iron levels, together with conventional liver function tests, were measured at 24, 48, 72, 120 and 168 hours after liver damage had been induced. All animals were sacrificed upon the completing of the one week's test period and tissue specimens were prepared for H-E and Gomori's iron stain. Following are the results. 1. Normal iron absorption rate of the rabbit was $41.72{\pm}3.61%$ when 0.5mg of iron was given in the fasting state, as measured by subtracting the amount recovered in stool collected for 7 days from the amount given. The test period of 7 days is adequate, for only 1% of the iron given was excreted thereafter. 2. The intestinal iron absorption rate and serum iron level were significantly increased when the animal was poisoned by a single subcutaneous injection of 0.15cc. per kg. of body weight of carbon tetrachloride or more, or the liver was irradiated with a single dose of 12,000 rads or more. The results of liver function tests which were done simultaneously remained within normal limit except SGOT and SGPT which were somewhat increased. 3. In each case, there has been good correlation between the extent of liver cell damage and degree of increased iron absorption rate or serum iron level. 4. The method of liver damage appeared to make no obvious difference in the pattern of iron deposit in liver. This may be partly due to the fact that tissue specimens were obtained too late, for by this time the elevated serum iron level had returned within normal range and the pathological changes were almost healed. 5. The possible factors and relationship between intestinal iron absorption and hepatic parenchymal cell damage has been discussed.

The process parameter in optimized KOH alkali activation of soft carbon series coke material in high purity was set with DOE experiments design. The activated carbon was produced by performing the activation process based on the set process parameters. The specific surface area was measured and pore size was analyzed by $N_2$ absorption method for the produced activated carbon. The surface functional group was analyzed by Boehm method and metal impurities were analyzed by XRF method. The specific surface area was increased over 2,000 $m^2/g$ as the mixing ratio of activation agent increased. The micro pores in $5{\sim}15{\AA}$ and surface functional group under 0.4 meq/g were obtained. The contents of the metal impurity in activated carbon which is the factor for reducing the electrochemical characteristics was reduced less than 100 ppm through the cleansing process optimization. The electrochemical characteristics of activated carbon in 38.5 F/g and 26.6 F/cc were checked through the impedance measuring with cyclic voltammetry scan rate in 50~300 mV/s and frequency in 10 mHz ~100 kHz. The activated carbon was made in the optimized activation process conditions of activation time in 40 minutes, mixing ratio of activation agent in 4.5 : 1.0 and heat treatment temperature over $650^{\circ}C$.
Metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were thermally synthesized through the mixing of anatase to metal(Cu, Zn) containing phenol resin in an ethanol solvent coagulation method. The BET surface area increases, with the increase depending on the amount of metal salt used. From SEM images, metal components and carbon derived from phenol resin that contains metal was homogeneously distributed to composite particles with porosity. XRD patterns revealed that metal and titanium dioxide phase can be identified for metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites, however, the diffraction peaks of carbon were not observed due to the low carbon content on the $TiO_2$ surfaces and due to the low crystallinity of the amorphous carbon. The results of a chemical elemental analysis of the metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites showed that most of the spectra for these samples gave stronger peaks for C, O, treated metal components and Ti metal compared to that of any other elements. According to photocatalytic results, the MB degradation can be attributed to the three types of synergetic effect: photocatalysis, adsorptivity and electron transfer, according to the light absorption between the supporter $TiO_2$, metal species, and carbon layers.
Temperature was considered to estimate the minimum detectable absorption coefficient of aerosol particles from photothermal spectroscopy. Light energy absorbed by subsequent emission from the aerosol results in the heating of the aerosol sample and consequently causes a temperature change as well as changes in thermodynamic parameters of the sample. This thermal effect is the basis of photothermal spectroscopy. Photothermal spectroscopy has several types of techniques depending on how the photothermal effects are detected. Photothermal interferometry traces the photothermal effect, refractive index, using an interferometer. Photoacoustic spectroscopy detects the photothermal effect, sound wave, using a microphone. In this study, it is suggested that the detection limit for photothermal spectroscopy can be influenced by the introduction of a slip correction factor when the light absorption is determined in a high temperature environment. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient depends on the density, the specific heat and the temperature, which are thermodynamic properties. Without considering the slip correction, when the temperature of the environment is 400 K, the minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photothermal interferometry increases approximately 0.3% compared to the case of 300 K. The minimum detectable absorption coefficient for photoacoustic spectroscopy decreases only 0.2% compared to the case of 300 K. Photothermal interferometry differs only 0.5% point from photoacoustic spectroscopy. Thus, it is believed that photothermal interferometry is reliably comparable to photoacoustic spectroscopy under 400 K.
In this study, as a candidate of the carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) absorbents, the mixture solution of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were investigated. $CO_2$ absorption rate was measured by using high pressure $CO_2$ screening equipment in the range of 1 - 10wt% THF. Absorption capacity of the mixture solution was also estimated. Based on the results, we found that mixture solution containing THF had higher absorption rate and $CO_2$ loading capacity compared to PEGDME at $25^{\circ}C$.

If the fiber reinforced plastic is exposed to the moisture for a long period of time, most of moisture absorption occurs on the resin place, thus dropping cohesiveness between the molecules as the water molecules permeated between high molecular chains grant high molecular mobility and flexibility. Also as the micro crack occurs due to the permeation of moisture on the interface of glass fiber and epoxy resin, it is developed to the overall damage of interface place. Hence, the study on absorption is essential as the mechanical and physical properties of fiber reinforced composites are reduced. However, the study on absorption has the inconvenience needing to expose composite materials to fresh water or seawater for 1 month or up to 1 year. Therefore, this study has exposed fiber reinforced composites to fresh water and has developed a model with an accuracy of 98% after comparing the analysis value obtained by using ANSYS while basing on the experimental value of property decline by absorption and the basic properties of glass fiber and epoxy resin used in the experiment.
The theoretical membrane gas absorption module treatments in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor using Happel's free surface model were obtained under countercurrent-flow operations. The analytical solutions were obtained using the separated variable method with an orthogonal expansion technique extended in power series. The $CO_2$ concentration in the liquid absorbent, total absorption rate and absorption efficiency were calculated theoretically and experimentally with the liquid absorbent flow rate, gas feed flow rate and initial $CO_2$ concentration in the gas feed as parameters. The improvements in device performance under countercurrent-flow operations to increase the absorption efficiency in a carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas feed mixture using a pure water liquid absorbent were achieved and compared with those in the concurrent-flow operation. Both good qualitative and quantitative agreements were achieved between the experimental results and theoretical predictions for countercurrent flow in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor with accuracy of $6.62{\times}10^{-2}{\leq}E{\leq}8.98{\times}10^{-2}$.
It is important to satisfy the requirements and standards for the protections of passengers in a car accident. There are lots of studies on the crushing energy absorption of a structure member in automobiles. In this paper, we have studied to investigate collapse characteristics and moisture absorption movements of CFRP( carbon fiber reinforced plastics) structure members when CFRP laminates are under the hygrothermal environment. In particular, the absorbed energy, mean collapse load and deformation mode were analyzed for CFRP members which absorbed most of the collision energy. Also, variation of stacking angle is important to increase the energy absorption capability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the strength reduction and moisture absorption behavior of CFRP hat shaped member. Therefore we have made a impact collapse experiment to research into the difference of absorbed energy and deformation mode between moisture absorbed specimen and non-moisture absorbed. As a result, the effect of moisture absorption and impact loads of approximately 50% reduction in strength are shown.
