  • Emissions inputs for use in air quality modeling of Korea were generated with the emissions inventory data from the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), maintained under the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS) database. Source Classification Codes (SCC) in the Korea emissions inventory were adapted to use with the U.S. EPA's Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) by finding the best-matching SMOKE default SCCs for the chemical speciation and temporal allocation. A set of 19 surrogate spatial allocation factors for South Korea were developed utilizing the Multi-scale Integrated Modeling System (MIMS) Spatial Allocator and Korean GIS databases. The mobile and area source emissions data, after temporal allocation, show typical sinusoidal diurnal variations with high peaks during daytime, while point source emissions show weak diurnal variations. The model-ready emissions are speciated for the carbon bond version 4 (CB-4) chemical mechanism. Volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions from painting related industries in area source category significantly contribute to TOL (Toluene) and XYL (Xylene) emissions. ETH (Ethylene) emissions are largely contributed from point industrial incineration facilities and various mobile sources. On the other hand, a large portion of OLE (Olefin) emissions are speciated from mobile sources in addition to those contributed by the polypropylene industry in point source. It was found that FORM (Formaldehyde) is mostly emitted from petroleum industry and heavy duty diesel vehicles. Chemical speciation of PM2.5 emissions shows that PEC (primary fine elemental carbon) and POA (primary fine organic aerosol) are the most abundant species from diesel and gasoline vehicles. To reduce uncertainties in processing the Korea emission inventory due to the mapping of Korean SCCs to those of U.S., it would be practical to develop and use domestic source profiles for the top 10 SCCs for area and point sources and top 5 SCCs for on-road mobile sources when VOC emissions from the sources are more than 90% of the total.

  • In this study, microemulsion formation of water and carbon dioxide was investigated by using surfactant as one of the methods for increasing the mutual solubility between water and carbon dioxide. The surfactant 2,2,3,3,3-Pentafluoro-1-propanol was added to form a microemulsion of water and carbon dioxide. The cloud point change and trend of micro emulsion were investigated by adding water and a certain amount of surfactant, 2,2,3,3,3-Pentafluoro-1-propanol to supercritical carbon dioxide. In the case of surfactant + carbon dioxide system, it was 8.35 ~ 12.69 MPa in temperature range of 313.2 ~ 353.2 K. In the case of water + surfactant + carbon dioxide system, the temperature ranged from 318.2 ~ 338.2 K to pressure range 7.83 ~ 17.28 MPa.

  • The performance of Li-ion system based on $LiCoO_2$ and Graphite is well optimized for the 3C applications. The charge-discharge mode, the manufacturing process, the cell performance and the thermal reactions affecting safety has been explained in the engineering point of view. The energy density of the current LIB system is in the range of 300~400 Wh/l. In order to achieve the energy density higher than 500 Wh/l, the active materials should be modified or changed. Adopting new high capacity anode materials would be effective to improve energy density.

  • Effects of the amount of nickel powder (Ni) in Ni-carbon fiber (CF) hybrid filler systems on the conductivity(or resistivity) and thermal coefficient of resistance (TCR) of filled high density polyethylene were studied. Increases of the resistivity and TCR with increasing Ni concentration at a given hybrid filler content were observed. Using the fiber contact model, we showed that the main role of Ni in the hybrid filler system is to decrease the interfiber contact resistance when Ni concentration is less than the threshold point. The formation of structural defects leading to reduced reinforcing effect resulted in both a reduction of strength and an increase of the coefficient of thermal expansion in the composite film; these changes are responsible for the increases of both resistivity and TCR with increasing Ni concentration in the hybrid filler system.

  • This study is investigate the bending behavior of real size RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. For experimental study, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams of real size(4 NU-beams and 4 U-beams) are tested and compared. NU-beam has not a V-shaped band and V-beam has a V-shaped band. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets, the existence of U-shaped band, and four point loading, etc. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without V-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. For the strengthening method with carbon fiber sheets of the real size RC beams, it is required the finding a solution to the bonding problem.

  • This study attempts to develop a real-time debonding monitoring system for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened structures by continuously inspecting the bonding condition between the CFRP layer and the host structure. The uniqueness of this study is in developing a new concept and theoretical framework of nondestructive testing (NDT), in which debonding is detected without relying on previously-obtained baseline data. The proposed reference-free damage diagnosis is achieved based on the concept of time reversal acoustics (TRA). In TRA, an input signal at an excitation point can be reconstructed if the response signal measured at another point is reemitted to the original excitation point after being reversed in the time domain. Examining the deviation of the reconstructed signal from the known initial input signal allows instantaneous identification of damage without requiring a baseline signal representing the undamaged state for comparison. The concept of TRA has been extended to guided wave propagations within the CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams to improve the detectibility of local debonding. Monotonic and fatigue load tests of large-scale CFRP-strengthened RC beams are conducted to demonstrate the potential of the proposed reference-free debonding monitoring system. Comparisons with an electro-mechanical impedance method and an inferred imaging technique are provided as well.

  • Hydrogen fuel cell propulsion ships are emerging to respond to the recently strengthened carbon emission regulations in the international shipping sector. Methanol can be stored in a liquid state at normal pressure and temperature, and has the advantage of lower reforming temperature compared to other fuels. In this study, the optimal operating point of the methanol steam reforming system was derived by changing the Steam Carbon Ratio (SCR) from 0.10 to 3.00. Results showed that In terms of methanol conversion rate and hydrogen yield, the larger the SCR is the better, but in terms of system efficiency, it is most advantageous to operate at SCR 0.70 in Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) mode and SCR 0.80 in Pd membrane mode. Through this study, it was found that the optimal SCR in the reformer and the entire system including the reformer may be different, which indicates that the optimum operating point may be different depending on the change of the system configuration.

  • The study has been designed to develop water vapor supply for semiconductor industry, industrial gas manufacturing, impurities analysis, and fuel cell. Water concentration in air reached $1019{\mu}mol/mol$ at dew temp ($-20^{\circ}C$) and water concentration in CO2 reached $127{\mu}mol/mol$ at dew temp ($-40^{\circ}C$. Carbon dioxide needs more wet gas than air because interaction potential of carbon dioxide shows more strong attraction than air.
