  • We experimented with the particle-settling velocity and CHCl3 absorption efficiency of seven activated-carbon and analyzed seven heavy metal contents by elution for application to the field treatment of sunken HNS on the marine seabed. The mean particle-settling velocity was in the range 0.5-8 cm/s, except when the 8-20 mesh was used. The larger the HNS particle, the faster the particle-settling velocity was, and the CHCl3 absorption efficiency increased considerably owing to the larger surface area. In addition, the elution test results showed that the total Zn and As contents in >100-meshed activated carbon was higher than the contents criteria for the standard for water-treatment agents, and Cr, Zn, and As were released at higher concentrations than those released by other activated-carbon groups. Taken together, the CHCl3 absorption efficiency, settling velocity, and elution test results suggested that the 20-60, 20-40, and 2mm&down mesh activated-carbon adsorbents could be applied to the field treatment of HNSs and that the minimum required amount for field treatment were 0.82, 0.90, and 1.28 ton/㎘, respectively, as calculated based on the HNS-adsorption-capacity priority.

  • The absorption characteristics of powdered activated carbon doped by transition-metal nanoparticles were investigated to enhance the remove efficiencies of $TCOD_{Mn}$ and Color from the flexo-inks wastewater. According to the adsorption dynamics of PAC and MPAC, the optimal dosage of activated-carbon adsorbents was 3 g/L under the reaction conditions of pH6.0, 30 mill of reaction time, 240 rpm of mixing intensity. The removal efficiencies by the optimal dosages were maximized as 19% $TCOD_{Mn}$, 57% Color for PAC and 88% $TCOD_{Mn}$, 95% Color for MPAC. Freundlich indexes of isotherm absorption were estimated as follows: i) For PAC, k=-8.11, 1/n=2.98, r=0.91 in the raw water, and k=0.14, b/n=0.75, r=0.96 in the biological treatment water, ii) For MPAC, k=2.69, 1/n=0.21, r=0.80 in the raw water, and k=0.74, 1/n=1.17, r=0.95 in the biological treatment water. MPAC (Powdered activated carbon doped by transition-metal nanoaprticles) was very effective in the removal of organics from the raw water and biological treatment water, as Freundlich indexes of 1/n for both types of water were estimated less than 2.0.

  • In order to compare their absorption abilities of carbon dioxide, Hyamine base and phenyl ethylamine were employed in wet combustion experiments. The known content of liver lipid and uniformly mixed palmitic $acid-C^{14}$ were oxidized with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Carbon dioxide produced was trapped by the amines tested through thin tube. The amines absorbed carbon dioxide were mixed with diotal scintillator and counted by liquid scintillation counter. The counting efficiencies and radioactivity recoveries were 50 to 60 % and nearly 100 % for both amines. However, the absorption ability of carbon dioxide by phenyl ethylamine was about two times that of Hyamine base. This technique would not be necessary for the counting of liver lipid of swim, because the efficiencies were not increased and counting accuracies were similar to those of direct counting.

  • Characterization of the UV oxidation for raw natural rubber (NR) was investigated in controlled conditions through image and FT-IR analysis. The UV oxidation was performed on a thin film of natural rubber coated on a KBr window at 254 nm and room temperature to exclude the thermal oxidation. Before or after exposure to UV light, image of the NR thin film was observed at a right or tilted angle. FT-IR absorption spectra were measured in transmission mode with the UV irradiation time. The UV oxidation of NR was examined by the changes of absorption peaks at 3425, 1717, 1084, 1477, 1377, and $833cm^{-1}$ which were assigned to hydroxyl group (-OH), carbonyl group (-C=O), carbon-oxygen bond (-C-O), methylene group $(-CH_2-)$, methyl group $(-CH_3)$, and cis-methine group $(cis-CCH_3=CH-)$, respectively. During the initial exposure period, the results indicated that the appearance of carbonyl group was directly related to the reduction of cis-methine group containing carbon-carbon double bond (-C=C-). Most of aldehydes or ketones from carbon-carbon double bonds were formed very fast by chain scission. A lot of long wide cracks with one orientation at regular intervals which resulted in consecutive chain scission were observed by image analysis. During all exposure periods, on the other hand, it was considered that the continuous increment of hydroxyl and carbonyl group was closely related to the decrement of methylene and methyl group in the allylic position. Therefore, two possible mechanisms for the UV oxidation of NR were suggested.

  • Korean grape-seed that is one of the agricultural waste was used as a raw material to prepare activated carbon through roasting, carbonization and chemical activation processes. NaOH, KOH, ZnCl$^2$ were also used as activation reagents. The mixing of the ratios of the grape-seed and each activation reagent were varied to 100-300 weight percent. The surface areas of the activated carbon manufacture from the grape-seed were 44.09~121.33 m$^2$/g. The adsorbate transmittance of methylene blue was determined UV absorption at 660 nm as maximum adsorption wavelength using by UV spectrophotometer. As a result, adsorption of methylene blue on the activated carbon prepared with NaOH activation was more successful than others. Equilibrium absorption time was approximately 60 min.

  • In this study, 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate ionic liquid has been synthesized, characterized and tested with respect to carbon dioxide absorption with the aim to use it as advanced absorbent materials in fossil fuel processing. The ionic liquid was synthesized by a one step method, low cost. The thermal and chemical stability of selected ionic liquid has been investigated by DSC, TGA and the structure was verified by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. The solubility of carbon dioxide in the methanesulfonate-based ionic liquids were measured using a high-pressure equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell at 30, 50 and $70^{\circ}C$ and pressure up to 195 bar. The results show that carbon dioxide solubilities of 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate increased with pressure increasing and temperature decreasing, and the carbon dioxide absorption capacity showed 27.6 $CO_2/IL$(g/kg) at $30^{\circ}C$, 13 bar.

  • The absorption capacity and initial absorption rate in 5 %, 10%, 15 % and 20% $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ under the constant temperature at $40^{\circ}C$ and the initial absorption rate in mixture of different alkaline salts such as $KHCO_3$, $CaCO_3$ and $K_{2}CO_{3}$ were measured using batch type stirred cell contractor. 10% $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ showed the highest absorption capacity and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ and $K_{2}CO_{3}$ showed the somewhat increased absorption capacity and initial absorption rate respectively. Further more, we have studied the effect of adding Pz and Pp to $Na_{2}CO_{3}$. The result showed that absorption rate of $CO_2$ was increased by adding these additives.

  • Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites are increasingly being used in a variety of industry applications, such as aircraft, automobiles, and ships because of their high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Aircraft are exposed to high temperatures and high humidity for a long duration during flights. CFRP materials of the aircraft can absorb water, which could decrease the adhesion strength of these materials and cause their volumes to change with variation in internal stress. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the characteristics of CFRP composites under actual conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study air-coupled ultrasonic testing (ACUT) was applied to the evaluation of water absorption properties of CFRP composites. CFRP specimens were fabricated and immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60, and 120 days, after which their ultrasonic images were obtained by ACUT. The water absorption properties were determined by quantitatively analyzing the changes in ultrasonic signals. Further, shear strength was applied to the specimens to verify the changes in their mechanical properties for water absorption.

  • Global warming due to greenhouse gases is an issue of great concern today. Fossil fuel power plants, especially coal-fired thermal power plants, are a major source of carbon dioxide emission. In this work, carbon capture and utilization using sodium hydroxide was studied experimentally. Application for flue gas of a coal-fired power plant is considered. Carbon dioxide, reacting with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, could be converted to sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$). A bench-scale unit of a reactor system was designed for this experiment. The capture scale of the reactor system was 2 kg of carbon dioxide per day. The detailed operational condition could be determined. The purity of produced sodium bicarbonate was above 97% and the absorption rate of $CO_2$ was above 95% through the experiment using this reactor system. The results obtained in this experiment contain useful information for the construction and operation of a commercial-scale plant. Through this experiment, the possibility of carbon capture for coal power plants using sodium hydroxide could be confirmed.

  • Carbon nanotubes were synthesized at various conditions using Ni-catalytic thermal chemical vapor deposition method and their characteristic properties were investigated by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes were formed on very fine Ni-catalytic particles. The carbon nanotubes synthesized by thermal decomposition of acetylene at $700^{\circ}C$ had a coiled shape, while those synthesized at $850^{\circ}C$ showed a curved and Y-shape having a bamboo-like morphology. It was found that the carbon nanotube was also made on the fine Ni-catalytic particles formed on the surface of 100~400nm sized large ones after pretreatment with $NH_3$.ber composites show the high dielectric constant and large conduction loss which is increased with anisotropy of fiber arrangement. It is, therefore, proposed that the glass and carbon fiber composites can be used as the impedance transformer (surface layer) and microwave reflector, respectively. By inserting the foam core or honeycomb core (which can be treated as an air layer) between glass and carbon fiber composites, microwave absorption above 10 dB (90% absorbance) in 4-12 GHz can be obtained. The proposed fiber composites laminates with sandwitch structure have high potential as lightweight and high strength microwave absorbers.
