Viscoelastic characteristics of cured phenolic resin/carbon fiber composite materials were investigated through glass transition and degradation reaction processes in the high temperature region up to $400^{\circ}C$. A typical glass transition of the cross-linked thermoset polymer was followed by irreversible degradation reactions, which were exhibited by the increasing storage modulus and loss modulus peak. A degradation master curve was constructed by using the vertical and horizontal shift factors, both of which complied well with the Arrhenius equation in light of the kinetic expression of degradation rate constants. Using an analogy to the Havriliak-Negami equation in dielectric relaxation phenomena, a viscoelastic modeling methodology was developed to characterize the frequency- and temperature-dependent complex moduli of the degrading thermoset polymer composite systems. The temperature-dependent relaxation time of the degrading composites was determined in a continuous fashion and showed a minimum relaxation time between the glass transition and degradation reaction regions. The capability of the developed modeling methodology was demonstrated by describing the complex behavior of the viscoelastic complex moduli of reacting phenolic resin composite systems.
Reaction bonded si-SiC composites were prepared by silicon infiltration technique at temperature of 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in vaccum atmosphere. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Si-SiC composites were investigated and characterized. UF-15 and SE-10 as SiC powders, phenolic resin and carbon black as carbon source, and metallic silicon powder as molten Si source were used as starting materials. New SiC crystallines nucleatd and grown by reaction of Si and C were detected by TEM and SEM-EDS. The bonding between new and original SiC was found to be strong. But the wetting of SiC by unreacted metallic Si and the rapid grain growth of new SiC decreased density and fracture toughness. Fracture toughness and modulus of rupture of Si-SiC composite were about 3.2 MPa.m1/2 and 480 MPa, respectively.
PAN-based activated carbon fibers/phenolic resin matrix composites (ACFCs) were manufactured via molding process with oxidized carbon fabrics (plain-type) and phenolic resin (resole-type) compounded by 70 : 30 wt%. The green body (as molded) was submitted to carbonization (at 100$0^{\circ}C$) in an inert environment and activation (at 700, 800, 900 and 100$0^{\circ}C$) in a $CO_2$ environment. In this work, the influence of activation temperatures was investigated in surface properties, such as pH, acid- and base-values by titration method, and in adsorption properties, i.e., specific surface area and pore structures by BET-method of the composites. Also, the pressure drops of the specimens were calibrated by ASTM. As a result, the activation temperature influenced the surface property of ACFCs. When the activation temperature was higher than 90$0^{\circ}C$, the surface was gradually developed in basic nature. And, the evolutions of specific surface area, total pore volume and pore size distribution of ACFCs could be easily confirmed the dependence on the activation temperature. Among them, well-developed pore structure from adsorption characteristics was changed of the ACFCs activated at 90$0^{\circ}C$. Also, the pressure drop was slightly decreased with increasing the temperature due to increasing the burn-off with heat treatment temperature of ACFCs.

In this paper, three-dimensional thermo-mechanical properties of carbon-phenolic 8-hamess satin weave composites were predicted considering geometric parameters of microstructures. The effective properties were calculated by a series of numerical experiments based on unit cell analysis. The microstructural details were modeled through macro-elements, and the periodic boundary conditions were derived for corresponding un it cell types. The Monte Carlo method was employed to consider the random phase shift between the layers, and the results were investigated on the effect of the geometric parameters of shift, number of layers and waviness ratios. Experimental tests were also performed and the results were compared.
The novel carbon coating process for interlayer of fiber reinforced ceramic composites between fiber and matrix was performed by carbonizing phenolic resin solution that coated on fiber surface in $N_2$ atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ to improve the strength and fracture toughness of CMC(ceramic matrix composite). 160 nm carbon layer was coated on fiber surface with 5 vol% of phenolic resin solution. Since the process temperature ($600^{\circ}C$) is lower than chemical vapor deposition($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), the strength and toughness could be preserved. Furthermore the coating thickness uniformity was improved to 8% of deviation along the stacking sequence. Therefore, prevention from fiber degradation during coating process and controlling coating thickness uniformity along the preform depth were achieved by coating with phenolic resin carbonizing method.

The thermal degradation of carbon fiber reinforced phenolic composites have been studied at high temperature by using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The aim is that ultimately it can be used to predict the service temperature during solid rocket firing for any level and type of mechanical loading and to recommend protection systems required. To simulate the high heating rate in firing condition, the modified thermal decomposition constant (1000 K/min) was used for FEM analysis. The temperature distribution and the thickness of thermal decomposition were estimated well and we could predict the thickness of thermal decomposition within ${\pm}1mm$.

Tribological behaviors of carbon epoxy composites whose surfaces have many small grooves were compared with respect to coating method under dry sliding and water lubricating conditions. The surface coating materials were epoxy (Ep) and polyethylene (PE) mixed with self-lubricating $MoS_2$ and PTFE powders. The wear morphology of the composites observed with a scanning electron microscopic (SEM) revealed that the surface coating layer mixed with the self-lubricating powder on the grooved surface significantly improved the wear resistance under water lubricating condition because the surface coating layer blocked water to penetrate the composite surface and the self-lubricating powder reduced the wear on the coating by suppressing the generation of blisters.
In this study, we used activated carbon (AC) and titanium oxysulfate as a titanium precursor to prepare carbon/titania composites. We then mixed it with bentonite in different ratios to make a carbon/titania/bentonite monolith for use in architecture bricks by using Phenolic rosin (PR) as a bonding agent. The physicochemical properties of the prepared composites were analyzed by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), self-cleaning effect and bactericidal tests. The BET surface areas increased as the ratio of carbon/titania composites increased. The SEM microscopy showed that the $TiO_2$ and bentonite were coated on the surface of the AC. The XRD patterns showed a mixture structure of anatase and rutile of $TiO_2$ with a clear $SiO_2$ structure. The EDX spectra of the carbon/titania/bentonite monolith confirmed the presence of various elements, namely C, O, Ti and Si, as well as other, impure elements. Moreover, to determine the self-cleaning effect of the carbon/titania/bentonite monolith, we used methylene blue (MB, $C_{16}H_{18}N_3S{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}3H_2O$) in an aqueous solution under the irradiation of visible light. Accordingly, all of the samples had excellent degradation of the MB solution. Furthermore, it was observed that the composites with sunlight irradiation had a greater effect on E. coli than any other experimental conditions.
Rigid porous carbon fiber composites with the uniform pore size distribution were prepared by vacuum forming from water slurries containing carbonized PAN fibers, a phenolic resin and ceramic binders. The composites were designed to use for highly efficient carbon fiber filters for particulate filtration and gas adsorption. As the as-received carbon fibers of 1mm in length were milled to an approximate average length of 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, modulus of rupture (MOR) of the composite filter was increased from 1MPa to the value larger than 5 MPa. Modulus of rupture (MOR) for the composite filter fabricated using the milled carbon fiber was increased from 5 MPa to 10 MPa as the carbonization temperature of the PAN fiber was raised from 90$0^{\circ}C$ to 140$0^{\circ}C$. The air permeability and an average pore size of the composite filter were increased from 40 to 270cc/min.$\textrm{cm}^2$ and from 35 to 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively, as the apparent porosity increased from 80 to 95%. It was shown that the MOR of the carbon fiber composite filter was dependent primarily on the average length of carbon fiber, carbonization temperature and the type of bonding materials.
Optimal dispersion and fabrication conditions of carbon nanotube (CNT) embedded in phenolic resin were determined by electrical resistance measurement; and interfacial property was investigated between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites by electro-micromechanical techniques. Wettability of carbon fiber was improved significantly after plasma treatment. Surface energies of carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites were measured using Wilhelmy plate technique. Since surface activation of carbon fiber, the advancing contact angle decreased from $65^{\circ}$ to $28^{\circ}$ after plasma treatment. It was consistent with static contact angle results of carbon fiber. Work of adhesion between plasma treated carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic nanocomposites was higher than that without modification. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and apparent modulus also increased with plasma treatment of carbon fiber.
