  • In this paper, we manufactured silsesquiaznae (SSQZ)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) surface heating elements, which allowed stable heating at high temperatures. The prepared composite sheet was confirmed by FE-SEM that the SSQZ fully coated the surface of CNT sheet. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the silicon carbonitride (SiCN) ceramic formed by heat treatment of 800℃ have no defects found and maintain intact structure. The CNT/SiCN composite sheet was able to achieve higher thermal stability than raw CNT sheets in both nitrogen and air atmosphere. Finally, the CNT/SiCN composite sheet was possible to heat up at a temperature of over 700℃ in the atmosphere, and the re-heating was successfully operated after cooling.

  • Two sheets of high strength cement paste using ordinary Portland cement and water soluble polymer (polyacrylamide) were made by kneading with a twin roll mill. A carbon fiber layer out between two sheet of the cement paste, and then carbon fiber reinforced high strength cement composites were prepared by pressing them. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated through the observation of the microstructure and the application of fracture mechanics. When the carbon fiber was added with 0.2 and 0.3wt% to the composites the flexural strength and Young's modulus were about 110∼116MPa and 74∼77GPa respectively, and critical stress intensity was about 3.14MPam1/2. It can be considered that the strength improvement of high strength cement fiber composites may be due to the removal of macropores and the increase of various fracture toughness effects; grain bridging, frictional interlocking, polymer fibril bridging and fiber bridging.

  • All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSBs) using inorganic sulfide-based solid electrolytes are considered prospective alternatives to existing liquid electrolyte-based batteries owing to benefits such as non-flammability. However, it is difficult to form a favorable solid-solid interface among electrode constituents because all the constituents are solid particles. It is important to form an effective electron conduction network in composite cathode while increasing utilization of active materials and not blocking the lithium ion path, resulting in excellent cell performance. In this study, a mixture of fibrous VGCF and spherical nano-sized Super P was used to improve rate performance by fabricating valid conduction paths in composite cathodes. Then, composite cathodes of ASSBs containing 70% and 80% active materials ($LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$) were prepared by a solution-based process to achieve uniform dispersion of the electrode components in the slurry. We investigated the influence of binary carbon additives in the cathode of all-solid-state batteries to improve rate performance by constructing an effective electron conduction network.

  • Thermally or electrically conductive filler reinforced polymer composites are extensively being developed as the demand for light weight material increases rapidly in industiral applications need good conductivity such as heat sink of the electronics or light. Carbon or ceramic materials like graphite, carbon nanotube or boron nitride are typical conductive fillers with good thermal or electical conductivity. Using these conductive fillers, the polymer composites in the market show wide range of thermal conductivity from approximately 1 W/mK to 20 W/mK, which is quite enhanced considering the thermal conductivity lower than 0.5 W/mK for most polymeric materials. The practical use of these composites, however, is yet limited to specific applications because most composites are still not conductive enough or too difficult to process, too brittle, too expensive for higher conductivity. For practical use of conductive composite, the thermal conductivity required depending on the heat releasing mode are studied first for simplified unit cooling geometry to propose thermal conductivities of the composites for reasonable cooling performance comparing with the metal heat sink as a reference. Also, as a practical design for heat sink based on polymer composite, composite and metal sheet hybrid structures are investigated for LED lamp heat sink and audio amplication module housing to find that this hybrid structure can be a good solution considering all of the cooling performance, manufacturing, mechanical performance, cost and weight.
