  • Recently, the world has been declaring global carbon neutrality to curb carbon emissions, a major factor in global warming. Therfore, high-tech and clean energy industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductors are rapidly developing. The Korean government selected total 33 critical minerals on based of evaluating the supply risk and economic impact of raw minerals essential for national high-tech industries (semiconductors, secondary battery, etc). Among these critical minerals, Copper, Zinc and lead have been used as basic materials in human life from the past to the present and in addition, they are currently used as an essential material for mobile phones, electric vehicles, and batteries. So, I would like to introduce the Las Bambas copper mine within Apurimac porphyry copper metallogenic belt of Peru, which have the world's 2nd (copper), 4th (zinc) and 5th (lead) largest reserves of these critical minerals. Las Bambas copper mine is the world's largest mine with copper reserves of more than 1 billion tons and is joint venture project mine invested by MMG (Minerals and Metals Group, 62.5%), Guoxin international investment company (22.5%) and CITIC metal company (15.0%). This mine mainly produces copper and also produces gold, silver and molybdenum as a by-product. The ore grade of this mine has 0.77% Cu, 0.06 g/t Au, 3.93 g/t Ag and 178 ppm Mo. Mineral resource and ore reserve of this mine have 10.5 million ton Cu (0.61% Cu) and 6.9 million ton Cu (0.73% Cu). So, this mine life is about more than 20 years. The copper mineralization of this mine occurs as skarn type and vein type related with lower limestone of Ferrobamba formation and Cenozoic monzonites.

  • In this study, the thickness optimization for uni-directional (UD) glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates of the spar cap of composite tidal blades was performed under the tip deflection constrains. The spar cap was composed of GFRP composites and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The stress distributions in the blade as well as its material costs for the optimized results were additionally investigated. The optimized thickness was obtained by interacting a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm and an ABAQUS software to calculate an objective function. It was confirmed that the thickness of UD GFRP increased with a decrease of the restrained tip deflection when a thickness of UD CFRP laminates was constrained to 9 mm. The weight of the optimized spar-cap increased up to 96.2% while the maximum longitudinal tensile stress decreased up to 24.6%. The thickness of UD GFRP laminates increased with a decrease of the thickness of UD CFRP laminates when the tip deflection was constrained to 126.83 mm. The weight increased up to 40.1%, but the material cost decreased up to 16.97%. Finally, the relationships among the weight, internal tensile stress, and material costs were presented based on the optimized thicknesses of the spar cap.

  • The mechanical property related to lap shear strength of the joint structure between carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite and metal (Ni-Cr Alloy) under varying environmental conditions (temperature and humidity) was studied in order to apply to the aircraft fan blade. Room temperature dry (RTD), elevated temperature wet (ETW), and cold temperature dry (CTD) environmental conditions were chosen for investigation based on the flight conditions of aircraft. Lap shear strength tests were conducted according to ASTM Standard D3528 to evaluate the shear strength. The microstructure characteristic of failure zone was analyzed by SEM images to check the adhesive shear strength with the three environmental conditions. In comparison with shear strength for the RTD condition, the shear strength in the ETW condition was reduced by 72.8% while those for the CTD condition increased by 56.5%. The moisture absorption and high temperature in ETW condition strongly had an affect on mechanical property of adhesive, while cold temperature could enhance the adhesive shear strength due to the higher brittleness.

  • To manufacture a good organic fertilizer through rapid composting process, cow dung was mixed with bulking materials such as rice straws, shredded bark, wood chips, and saw dust. The mixing ratio of the cow dung and bulking material was two to one on volume basis and moisture content was adjusted to 60 to 70 percent, C/N ratio 25 to 30 and aeration forced with suction during the aerated pile fermentation. Aerated pile was established outdoors and curing pile was in vinylhouse and the experiment was conducted for 3 years from '88 to '90. After pilling, temperature in aerated pile was reached to the maximum level at 7 to 9 days and the temperatures of cow dung + shredded bark, cow dung + wood chips, and cow dung + rice straws were higher than that of cow dung, and cow dung + saw dust. Total carbon, and C/N ratio in aerated pile fermentation period were increased in the middle stage and then they were decreased with the process of days, and nutrient contents in curing pile period had the same tendency as in the aerated pile.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the fertilizer sources and ground cover mulches on nutrient release, growth, and photosynthesis in small one-year-old apple (Malus ${\times}$ domestica Borkh.) trees in controlled conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatments included no fertilizer (NF), commercial organic fertilizer (CF), and poultry litter (PL) for fertilizer treatments, and wood chips (WC), shredded paper (SP), green compost (GC), and grass clippings (GR) for cover mulch treatments. All treatments were applied proportionally based on the volume ratio equivalent to the soil. CF, PL, and GR treatments that had optimum carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) ratios (less than 30:1) for N mineralization through the microbes released the greatest $NH_4^+$ concentrations in the pot media at 90 days after the treatments, but GC mulch with the optimum C:N ratio did not. CF-, PL- and GR-treated plants had the largest leaf area, thickest stem diameter, longest shoot extension, and greater dry matter production. CONCLUSION(s): CF and PL showed an suitable organic nutrient source for improving plant growth in an orchard. Interestingly, GR also could be a nutrient source for tree growth, if vegetation competition is controlled by maintaining vegetation height and recycling enough grass clippings to the soil in an orchard.

  • The wintertime high loading for atmospheric pollutants is certainly expected in the Byunsan Peninsula of Korea because of a great-scale reclamation project having construction of 33 km tidal sea dike impounding an area of over 40,000 ha and long-range transport. The goal of this study is to trace the origin of this wintertime burden for ambient particulate matter (hereafter called "PM") in the Byunsan Peninsula of Korea. The size-segregated (i.e., cutoff size from 0.01 ${\mu}m$ to 4.7 ${\mu}m$) PM sampling was conducted at a ground-based site of Byunsan Peninsula located in the west coast of Korean Peninsula during the height of dike constructing. Data archived in this study are the mass concentrations of ionic, elemental, and carbonic components in size-fractioned PM. The elemental mass of individual submicrometer particles was also analyzed. The sum of 5-source (i.e., elemental carbon, organic materials, inorganic secondary pollutants, crustal matter, and sea-salts) concentrations shows the bimodal distribution (major and minor peaks formed around $D_p$, 0.65 ${\mu}m$ and $D_p$, 4.7 ${\mu}m$, respectively) by border with 0.19 ${\mu}m$ of cutoff size. The concentrations of EC in $PM_{1.1-0.01}$ in winter and spring times were 4.62 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ and 3.74 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$, respectively. Elemental masses of submicron individual particles are classified into two groups, i.e., the major elements (Cl, Al, Si, S, and P) and the minor trace elements. Cluster analysis differentiated the elements in submicron individual particles into 4-cluster. Among them, three clusters are in agreement with the major (Al, Si, S, and P), minor (Fe, Ca, and K), and trace compositions of coal burning. Meanwhile, Cl classified as an independent cluster has different source profile which was mainly due to the Saemangeum seawall project. Some highly toxic elements (e.g., Cr, Mn, and As (and/or Pb)) were also detected in some part of submicron individual PM. As a consequence, the combination of the Saemangeum project and winter monsoon played a considerable part in the double aggravation of wintertime air pollution in the Byunsan Peninsular.

  • $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3$/carbon composite materials are synthesized from a sucrose-containing precursor. Amorphous $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3/C$ (a-LVP/C) and crystalline $Li_3V_2(PO_4)_3/C$ (c-LVP/C) are obtained by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$, respectrively, and electrochemical performance as the negative electrode for lithium secondary batteries is compared for two samples. The a-LVP electrode shows much larger reversible capacity than c-LVP, which is ascribed to the spatial $Li^+$ channels and flexible structure of amorphous material. In addition, this electrode shows an excellent rate capability, which can be accounted for by the facilitated $Li^+$ diffusion through the defect sites. The sloping voltage profile is another advantageous feature for easy SOC (state of charge) estimation.

  • Transparent and conductive carbon nanotube on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were prepared by dip-coating method for self-sensing multi-functional nanocomposites. The changes in the electrical and optical properties of CNT coating mainly depended on the number of dip-coating, concentration of CNT solution. Consequently, the surface resistance and transmittance of CNT coating were sensitively controlled by the processing parameters. Surface resistance of CNT coating was measured using four-point method, and surface resistance of coated CNT could be better calculated by using the dual configuration method. Optical transmittance of PET film with CNT coating was evaluated using UV spectrum. Surface properties of coated CNT investigated by wettability test via static and dynamic contact angle measurement were consistent with each other. As dip-coating number increased, surface resistance of coated CNT decreased seriously, whereas the transmittance exhibited little lower due to the thicker CNT networks layer. Interfacial microfailure properties were investigated for CNT and indium tin oxide (ITO) coatings on PET substrates by electrical resistance measurement under cyclic loading fatigue test. CNT with high aspect ratio exhibited no change in surface resistance up to 2000 cyclic loading, whereas ITO with brittle nature showed a linear increase of surface resistance up to 1000 cyclic loading and then exhibited the level-off due to reduced electrical contact points based on occurrence of many micro-cracks.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the fixture abutment connection type and diameter on the screw joint stability in external butt joint for 2nd surgery and internal cone connected type implant system for 1st and 2nd surgery using ultimate fracture strength. Materials and Methods: USII system, SSII system and GSII system of Osstem Implant were used. Each system used the fixture with two different diameters and cement-retained abutments, and tungsten carbide / carbon coated abutment screws were used. Disc shaped stainless steel metal tube was attached using resin-based temporary cement. The experimental group was divided into seven subgroups, including the platform switching shaped specimen that uses a regular abutment in the fixture with a wide diameter in USII system. A static load was increased to the metal tube at 5mm deviated point from the implant central axis until it reached the compression bending strength at a rate of 1mm/min. Then the deformations and patterns of fracture in threaded connection were compared. Results and Conclusion: 1. In the comparison between the Regular diameter, compression bending strength of SSII system was higher than USII system and GSII system. There was no significant difference between USII system and GSII system. 2. In the comparison between wide diameter, compression bending strength was increased in the order of GSII system, USII system, and SSII system. 3. In comparison between the implant diameter, compression bending strength of the wide diameter was greater than the regular diameter in any system(P<0.05). 4. There was no significant difference between the platform switching (III group) and the regular diameter (I group) in USII system. 5. In USII system, fracture of abutment screw and deformation of both fixture and abutment were observed in I, II and III subgroups. 6. Failure pattern of SSII system, which was the fracture of abutment screw and deformation of the abutment and fixture, was observed in both IV and V subgroups. Fracture of some fixtures was observed in subgroup V. 7. Failure pattern of GSII system, which was the fracture of the abutment screw and deformation of the fixture and the abutment, was observed in both VI and VII subgroups. Apart from other subgroups, subgroup VII demonstrated no bending neither the fracture at the top of the fixture. The compressive deformation of internal slope in the fixture was the only thing observed in subgroup VII.

  • Lots of plastics are widely used in a variety of industrial field. And the amount of plastic waste is massively produced. In the study of waste recycling, it is emerged as an important issue to prevent the waste of potentially useful resource materials as well as to reduce ecological damage. So, the recycling of plastic waste has been currently paid attention to from the view point of reuse. Existing automatic sorting system consist of near infrared ray (NIR) sensors to classify the types of plastics. But the classification of black plastics still remains a challenge. Black plastics which contains carbon black are not almost classified by NIR because of the characteristic of the light absorption of black plastics. This study is focused on handling how to identify black plastics instead of NIR. Raman spectroscopy is used to get qualitative as well as quantitative analysis of black plastics. In order to improve the performance of identification, Support Vector Machine(SVM) classifier and Principal Component Analysis(PCA) are exploited to more preferably classify some kinds of the black plastics, and to analyze the characteristic of each data.
