엔진밸브 시트 표면의 오버레이층 특성에 미치는 용접법의 영향 (Effect of the Welding Methods on the Characteristics of Overlaying Seat-surfaces of Engine Valves)

  • An overlaying of the seating surfaces of engine valves by OAW, GTAW or PTA weldings are common practice. The OAW method of a lower torch energy density compared to GTAW and PTA methods produces smoother deposits but the pain size at the vicinity of the interface is increased remarkably up to $30~50{\mu\textrm{m}}$ (that of base metal is about $10\mu\textrm{m}$). It's grain coarsening and the solute dilution are related to the decarburizing during OAW could be minimized by reducing the preheating temperature and by maintaining the carbide precipitates in base metal prior to welding. The formation of columnar structures and carbide precipitation zone in the vicinity of the GTAW welded interface, because of the high heat concentration, causes weakened zone on the valve seat face. The width of the reaction boundary zone is about $50\mu\textrm{m}$ for PTA and GTAW overlaying, and about $150\mu\textrm{m}$ for OAW welding. The smaller width of the reaction boundary zone is the less the solute-dilution rate. Thereby PTA welding may be recommended for overlaying of the seating surfaces.

  • The effect of the role of alloyed components on the densification of two kind of high speed steel (mixed and prealloyed powder), which were sintered at 1403~ 1573 K for 7.2 ks in vacuum, was investigated. The results obtained were as follows. (1) Without the presence of Vanadium (V), the relative density of sintered compacts (Ds) could not reached the density of 100% regardless of the. elements in the compacts. (2) The addition of V up to 2 mass% did not result In the complete densification when the carbon content was fixed at 2% in the compact. (3) With the fixed amount of V of 7%, Ds decreased with the increase of the carbon content. (4) The addition of mixed fine powder to the prealloyed powder in the range of 20 to 40% provided the complete densification and carbide panicles of 1~2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ through the solid phase sintering. (5) The V element played important role in controlling the complete or incomplete densification of the sintered compacts in the alloyed component because of its formation of stable oxide and carbide as well as the low equilibrium pressure of CO gas.

Polyethylene glycol이 3가크롬 전기도금에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Polyethylene Glycol on the Trivalent Chromium Electroplating)

  • The effect of organic additives, polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the trivalent chromium electroplating was analysed in the view point of current efficiency, solution stability and metallurgical structure. It was measured that PEG-containing trivalent chromium solution had about 10% higher current efficiency than pure solution and controlled the micro-crack density of electrodeposits. PEG exhibited profound effect on the solution stability by reducing the consumption rate of formic acid which acts as a complexant to lower the activation energy required for electrochemical reduction of trivalent chromium ions. It was also revealed that the formation of chromium carbide layer was facilitated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which meant easier electrochemical codeposition of chromium and carbon, not single chromium deposition. Trivalent chromium layer formed from PEG-containing solution was amorphous with local nano-crystalline particles, which were prominently developed on the entire surface after non-oxidative heat treatment.

손상된 CrMoV 터빈로터강의 보수용접에서 후열처리 온도에 따른 열영향부의 특성 (A Characteristics of Heat Affected Zones in Weld Repair for a Damaged CrMoV Turbine Rotor Steel)

  • This study was performed to establish the characteristics of the heat affected zones from view point of the repair weldability for a damaged CrMoV steam turbine rotor steel. Characterization of the heat affected zones of the weldment was conducted with respect to various of postweld heat treatment temperatures, $566^{\circ}C$, $621^{\circ}C$ and $677^{\circ}C$. The evaluations of the heat affected zones were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, Charpy v-notch impact, tensile and stress-rupture tests. The results indicated that the effect of the postweld heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$ exhibited the favorable microstructure and mechanical properties for the stability of the heat affected zones. While the heat affected zone of the weldment, produced without postweld heat treatment, displayed the inferior toughness and microstructure indicating localized carbide precipitations on the grain boundary. It was also indicated that the stability of the heat affected zones were deteriorated by the formation of the cavitation on the grain boundaries.

Effect of Silicon Infiltration on the Mechanical Properties of 2D Cross-ply Carbon-Carbon Composites

  • Effect of silicon infiltration on the bend and tensile strength of 2D cross-ply carbon-carbon composites are studied. It is observed that bend strength higher than tensile strength in both types of composite is due to the different mode of fracture and loading direction. After silicon infiltrations bend and tensile strength suddenly decreases of carbon-carbon composites. This is due to the fact that, after silicon infiltration, silicon in the immediate vicinity of carbon forms the strong bond between carbon and silicon by formation silicon carbide and un-reacted silicon as free silicon. Therefore, these composites consist of three components carbon, silicon carbide and silicon. Due to mismatch between these three components secondary cracks developed and these cracks propagate from $90^{\circ}$ oriented plies to $0^{\circ}$ oriented plies by damaging the fibers (i.e., in-situ fiber damages). Hence, secondary cracks and in-situ fiber damages are responsible for degradation of mechanical properties of carbon-carbon composites after silicon infiltration which is revealed by microstructure investigation study by scanning electron microscope.

  • Edge termination technique is essential fer the fabrication of high volage devices. A proper edge termination technique is also needed in the fabrication of Silicon Carbide power devices for obtaining a stable high blocking voltage properties. Among the many techniques, the field plate formation is the easiest one that can utilize it for commercial usage. The growth of thick thermal oxide is difficult for SiC, however. In this paper, 6A grade SiC schottky barrier diodes(SBD) were fabricated with field plate edge termination. The oxides which is field plate were formed various methods such as dry oxidation, 10% $N_2O$ nitrided oxidation and PECVD deposition. The reverse characteristics of the SiC SBD with various oxide field plate were investigated.

초경합금 슬러지 재활용 공정 산물을 활용한 텅스텐 탄화물 제조 및 특성 평가 (Preparation and Characterization of Tungsten Carbide Using Products of Hard Metal Sludge Recycling Process)

  • 본 연구에서는 텅스텐산암모늄(APT, Ammonium Paratungstate, (NH4)10[W12O46H10])이 사용되지 않는 친환경 초경합금 슬러지 재활용 공정을 통해 초경합금 주원료인 텅스텐 탄화물 분말을 합성하고자 하였다. 초경합금 슬러지에 대한 산 처리를 통해 텅스텐산(H2WO4) 추출 및 결정화를 수행하고 결정화된 텅스텐산을 텅스텐 탄화물의 원료로 사용하였다. H2WO4에 대한 탄화환원을 통해 텅스텐탄화물 (WC) 분말이 합성되었고 합성된 WC 분말은 200~700nm 수준의 결정립으로 구성되어 있음이 확인되었다. 이는 현재 절삭공구로 가장 널리 사용되는 1~3㎛ 입도의 상용 WC 분말에 비해 미세한 것으로 텅스텐 금속 분말에 대한 고온(1,700℃ 이상) 고상 탄화법을 통해 제조되는 상용 WC 분말과 달리 H2WO4 나노 결정립에 대한 탄화환원을 통해 WC 분말이 합성되었기 때문으로 사료된다. H2WO4로 부터 합성된 WC 분말의 경우 탄화환원에 의해 탄소의 제거가 수월하여 상용 WC 분말에 비해 잔류 탄소가 적은 것으로 확인되었으며 작은 결정립 크기로 인해 초경합금 원료로 사용되었을 때 WC-Co 복합체 내 WC 입자의 성장이 활발하게 일어나 H2WO4로부터 합성된 WC 분말이 적용된 WC-Co 복합체의 경우 WC 입자가 조대하고 파괴인성이 우수한 것으로 확인되었다.

Microstructure and Polytype of in situ-Toughened Silicon Carbide

  • Fine (~0.09 $\mu$m) $\beta$-SiC Powders with 3.3wt% of large (~0.44$\mu$m) $\alpha$-SiC of $\beta$-SiC particles (seeds) added were hotpressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ using $Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$ and CaO as sintering aids and then annealed at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h to enhance grain growth. The resultant microstructure and polytypes were analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).Growth of $\beta$-SiC with high density of microtwins and formation of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains consisting of $\alpha$-SiC domain sandwiched between $\beta$-SiC domains were found in both specimens. When large $\alpha$-SiC (mostly 6H) seeds were added, the $\beta$-SiC transformend preferentially to the 6H polytype. In contrast, when large $\beta$-SiC (3C) seeds were added, the fine $\beta$-SiC transformed preferentially to the 4H polytype. Such results suggested that the polytype formation in SiC was influenced by crystalline form of seeds added as well as the chemistry of sintering aids. The ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ interface played and important role in the formation of elongated grains as evidenced by presence of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ composite grains with high aspect ratio.

  • Ti-stabilized 11 wt% Cr ferritic stainless steels (FSSs) for automotive exhaust systems have been experienced intergranular corrosion (IC) in some heat-affected zone (HAZ). The effects of sensitizing heat-treatment and silicon on IC were studied. Time-Temperature-Sensitization (TTS) curves showed that sensitization to IC was observed at the steels heat-treated at the temperature lower than $650^{\circ}C$ and that silicon improved IC resistance. The sensitization was explained by chromium depletion theory, where chromium is depleted by precipitation of chromium carbide during sensitizing heat-treatment. It was confirmed with the results from the analysis of precipitates as well as the thermodynamical prediction of stable phases. In addition, the role of silicon on IC was explained with the stabilization of grain boundary. In other words, silicon promoted the formation of the grain boundaries with low energy where precipitation was suppressed and consequently, the formation of Cr-depleted zone was retarded. The effect of silicon on the formation of grain boundaries with low energy was proved by the analysis of coincidence site lattice (CSL) grain boundary, which is a typical grain boundary with low energy.

  • $Cr_2AlC$ compounds were synthesized by hot pressing, and oxidized between 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 50 hours. They oxidized to a thin $Al_2O_3$ layer containing a small amount of $Cr_2O_3$with the liberation of carbon as CO or $CO_2$ gases. The consumption of Al to form the $Al_2O_3$ layer led to the depletion of Al and enrichment of Cr just below the $Al_2O_3$ layer, resulting in the formation of an underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer. As the oxidation temperature and time increased, the $Cr_7C_3$ oxide layer and the underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer thickened. The oxidation resistance of $Cr_2AlC$ was generally good due to the formation of the $Al_2O_3$ barrier layer.
