The nonlocal static bending, buckling, free and forced vibrations of graphene nanosheets are examined based on the Kirchhoff plate theory and Taylor expansion approach. The nonlocal nanoplate model incorporates the length scale parameter which can capture the small scale effect. The governing equations are derived using Hamilton's principle and the Navier-type solution is developed for simply-supported graphene nanosheets. The analytical results are proposed for deflection, natural frequency, amplitude of forced vibration and buckling load. Moreover, the effects of nonlocal parameter, half wave number and three-dimensional sizes on the static, dynamic and stability responses of the graphene nanosheets are discussed. Some illustrative examples are also addressed to verify the present model, methodology and solution. The results show that the new nanoplate model produces larger deflection, smaller circular frequencies, amplitude and buckling load compared with the classical model.

In the present paper, the three-dimensional model of a typical rectangular concrete tank is excited using an artificial and a natural three components earthquake ground motion and the staggered displacement method is utilized for solving the coupled problem of the tank-contained liquid system in time domain. In the proposed method, surface sloshing of the liquid is taken into account in addition to the impulsive term and the appropriate damping values are applied on both of them. The resulted responses are compared with those obtained from the ABAQUS finite element software. It is found that the convective term affects responses extensively and must be considered in seismic design/safety assessment of storage tanks. In addition, the utilized method for solving the coupled problem is stable during the conducted general dynamic analyses and is able to capture the expected phenomena.
In this article, buckling and free vibration of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams resting on elastic foundation are investigated by developing various higher order beam theories which capture shear deformation influences through the thickness of the beam without the need for shear correction factors. The elastic foundation is modeled as linear Winkler springs as well as Pasternak shear layer. The material properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to change gradually along the thickness through the Mori-Tanaka model. The small scale effect is taken into consideration based on nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. From Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of motion are derived and then solved applying analytical solution. To verify the validity of the developed theories, the results of the present work are compared with those available in literature. The effects of shear deformation, elastic foundation, gradient index, nonlocal parameter and slenderness ratio on the buckling and free vibration behavior of FG nanobeams are studied.
Despite the exceptional mechanical properties of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the effective properties of CNT-reinforced composites remain below expectations. The composite's microstructure has been identified as a key factor in explaining this discrepancy. In this contribution, a method for generating representative volume elements of aligned CNT sheets is presented. The model captures material characteristics such as random waviness and entanglement of individual nanotubes. Thus it allows studying microstructural effects on the composite's effective properties. Simulations investigating the strengthening effect of the application of a pre-stretch on the CNTs are carried out and found to be in very good agreement with experimental values. They highlight the importance of the nanotube's waviness and entanglement for the mechanical behavior of the composite. The presented representative volume elements are the first to accurately capture the waviness and entanglement of CNT sheets for realistically high volume fractions.
This paper proposes a new nonlocal higher-order hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory (HSBT) for the static bending and vibration of nanoscale-beams. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is incorporated, in order to capture small size effects. In the present model, the transverse shear stresses account for a hyperbolic distribution and satisfy the free-traction boundary conditions on the upper and bottom surfaces of the nanobeams without using shear correction factor. Employing Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion are derived. The governing equations are solved analytically for the edges of the beam are simply supported, and the obtained results are compared, as possible, with the available solutions found in the literature. Furthermore, the influences of nonlocal coefficient, slenderness ratio on the static bending and dynamic responses of the nanobeam are examined.
Analysis of ship parametric roll has generally been restricted to simple analytical models and sophisticated time domain simulations. Simple analytical models do not capture all the critical dynamics while time-domain simulations are often time consuming to implement. The model presented in this paper captures the essential dynamics of the system without over simplification. This work incorporates various important aspects of the system and assesses the significance of including or ignoring these aspects. Special consideration is given to the fact that a hull form asymmetric about the design waterline would not lead to a perfectly harmonic variation in metacentric height. Many of the previous works on parametric roll make the assumption of linearized and harmonic behaviour of the time-varying restoring arm or metacentric height. This assumption enables modelling the roll motion as a Mathieu equation. This paper provides a critical assessment of this assumption and suggests modelling the roll motion as a Hills equation. Also the effects of non-linear damping are included to evaluate its effect on the bounded parametric roll amplitude in a simplified manner.
Zoning has long been criticized for its negative effects and has been taken for granted that zoning works as a hurdle to urban diversity. Responses in the US have emphasized more fine-grained zoning approaches that plan mixed use. This paper introduces and evaluates Seoul's zoning system as a possible alternative. While US zoning regulations have relied on distinguishing ever larger numbers of land use zoning categories, Seoul has opted to integrate new land uses into existing classifications, allowing for greater flexibility of use in each zone. Using municipal building records to evaluate land use in three mid-density residential districts, this paper demonstrates that Seoul's flexible zoning is capable of producing diverse mixed use neighborhoods. It then highlights the potential downside of this approach, showing that flexibility allows for the commercialization and sectoral gentrification of residential districts. It concludes by suggesting that a combination of flexible zones and more fine-grained plans would capture the advantages of both US and Korean planning.

In the design stage of the very large container ships, some methodologies for the whipping effects have been developed, but most of them are based on single sea state. We developed a methodology that considers multiple sea states. Fluid-structure Interaction (FSI) analyses with one dimensional structural model were carried out to capture slamming-induced transient whipping behaviors. Because of the nature of random phases of the applied wave spectra, the required period for entire FSI analyses was determined from the convergence study where the whipping effect became stable. Low pass filtering was applied to the transient whipping responses to obtain the hull girder bending moment processes. Peak counting method for the filtered whipping responses was used to obtain collection of the vertical bending moment peaks. The whipping effect from this new method is compared with that from based on single sea state approach. The efficiency and advantage of the new methodology are presented.
In this study, the city of Osijek is used as a case study area for low to medium seismicity regions with deep soil over deep geological deposits to determine horizontal PGA values. For this reason, we propose new regional attenuation equations for PGA that can simultaneously capture the effects of deep geology and local soil conditions. A micro-zoning map for the city of Osijek is constructed using the derived empirical scaling equations and compared to all prior seismic hazard estimates for the same area. The findings suggest that the deep soil atop deep geological sediments results in PGA values that are only 6 percent larger than those reported at rock soil sites atop geological rocks. Given the rarity of ground motion records for deep soils atop deep geological layers around the world, we believe this case study is a start toward defining more reliable PGA estimates for similar areas.
This study investigates how affects elicited by visual images in print ads are integrated to form a liking for the ads. Assuming a sequential rather than simultaneous processing of still-cut images, we adopt the 'think-aloud' method to capture consumers' spontaneous responses to visual images. We hypothesize that not only would consumers show mixed affects toward a still-cut visual image but that they would also integrate their serial affects heuristically rather than simply averaging the affects as suggested by the compensatory hypothesis. By comparing the effects of two contradictory affect integration hypotheses (i.e., peak-affect and mood-maintenance) with compensatory integration, using a single regression model, we found that peak-negative along with mood maintenance integration of serial affects for a print ad works best in the formation of ad liking. The results also support our initial premise that people can have mixed valence even toward a still-cut ad.
