This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.
This paper presents the design and reliability evaluation of metallized film capacitor for power e lectronics application. The rated voltage of development capacitor is DC 3300[V], the capacitance is 5 ${\mu}F$ and the ripple current capability is 130 $A_{rms}$. Film metallization and patterns are an important design factor that has been development enhance the electric and reliability properties of film capacitor for power electronics. In term of capacitor construction and metallized pattern is one of the parameters that can be modified to further improve the rating in the terms of maximum ripple current and lifetime. This capacitor can be used as snubber capacitor application such as power train invertor system.
Induction motor requires a rotating magnetic field for rotation. Current required to generate the rotating magnetic field is immediately magnetizing current. This magnetizing current is associated with the reactive power. Induction motor is always required reactive power. If reactive power is supplied only to the power supply side, the power factor is low. Therefore, it is to compensate the power factor by connecting capacitors in parallel to the motor terminal. If the capacitor current is greater than the magnetizing current of the motor, there is a possibility that the self-excitation occurs. High voltage generated by the self-excitation leads to insulation failure on the motor. So it is necessary to calculate the power factor correction capacitor capacity the most suitable to the extent that the magnetizing current does not exceed the capacitor current. In this study, we first computed the magnetization current and the reactive power of the induction motor and then calculates a limit of the maximum power factor by comparing the magnetizing current and the capacitor current installed in order to achieve the target power factor.
This paper proposes a method for selecting the capacitance of DC-link capacitors of inverters. In general, the DC-link capacitance of the inverter system must be considered for DC-link voltage, ripple current, switching frequency, ripple voltage, and pulse-width modulation techniques. Therefore, the appropriate capacitance can be determined by finding the rms and peak values of the ripple current of the capacitor. In this paper, the process of extracting the ripple current of DC-link capacitor is described in detail. In addition, the simple method for finding DC-link capacitor capacitance using the result value is presented through the simulations.
As the increasing of Non-linear load, we have been growing interest for the harmonics. Harmonics has been focused on the current component rather than voltages. Voltage harmonics can be mainly generated at the PCC with non-linear load and act on voltage unbalance. Voltage harmonics can be enlarged at the capacitor with low impedance as frequency increases. Capacitor is basically used for the power-factor compensation and sometimes as the passive filter. Small voltage of low-order acts on quite a few at the capacitor by the current increase. Capacitor has easily fall under by harmonic components. In this paper, we measured the magnitude and phase angle of asymmetrical voltage with harmonics components at the PCC and calculated with the same condition. we concluded that voltage harmonics of higher order increase each current component but have a little effect on capacitor rating.
Capacitor is one of the reliability-critical components in power converters. The lifetime of the capacitor decreases as the operating temperature increases, and power losses caused by capacitor current are the main cause of the capacitor temperature increase. Therefore, various studies are being conducted to improve the lifetime of the capacitor by reducing the current of DC-link capacitors. In this study, pulse width modulation methods proposed for improving the lifetime of DC-link capacitors of the three-level NPC inverter are comparatively analyzed. The lifetime evaluation of the DC-link capacitor under different modulation methods is performed at component level first and then system level by considering all capacitors by applying Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, their effects on the efficiency and THD of the output current are also considered.
A high step-up dc-dc converter is proposed for photovoltaic power systems in this paper. The proposed converter consists of an input current doubler, a symmetrical switched-capacitor doubler and an active-clamp circuit. The input current doubler minimizes the input current ripple. The symmetrical switched-capacitor doubler is composed of two symmetrical quasi-resonant switched-capacitor circuits, which share the leakage inductance of the transformer as a resonant inductor. The rectifier diodes (switched-capacitor circuit) are turned off at the zero current switching (ZCS) condition, so that the reverse-recovery problem of the diodes is removed. In addition, the symmetrical structure results in an output voltage ripple reduction because the voltage ripples of the charge/pump capacitors cancel each other out. Meanwhile, the voltage stress of the rectifier diodes is clamped at half of the output voltage. In addition, the active-clamp circuit clamps the voltage surges of the switches and recycles the energy of the transformer leakage inductance. Furthermore, pulse-width modulation plus phase angle shift (PPAS) is employed to control the output voltage. The operation principle of the converter is analyzed and experimental results obtained from a 400W prototype are presented to validate the performance of the proposed converter.
This paper presents a design strategy for the control of the Z-source inverter (ZSI). For the Z-network capacitor voltage control, the average current model is derived to describe the dynamics of the voltage control and the controller outputs the average current command for the capacitor. Z-network inductor current reference is derived from the average current model of the Z-network capacitor. The inner current control loop outputs the average voltage command for the Z-network inductor and the shoot-through duty ratio of the ZSI is calculated from the output using the average voltage model of the Z-network inductor. The gain values of the current and voltage controllers are directly obtained by the Z-network parameters and desired bandwidth of each controller without a gain tuning process.
The fast charging photoflash capacitor charger with wide range current limiter is presented. By using proposed control logic block and wide range current limiter, the photoflash capacitor charger can reduce charging time and control life of battery for user convenience. The proposed photoflash capacitor charger has 3s charging time at 3.3V battery voltage, 1.2A current limit condition. It is well-suited for portable device application like digital camera, digital video camera, and mobile phone with camera.
Generally, series reactor is connected to the power capacitor in series to attenuate the distortion of voltage waveform and to reduce an inrush current of power capacitor. Also, harmonic current of power capacitor is highly dependent on the series reactor because it is operated with the power capacitor as a passive filter against nonlinear loads. In this paper, harmonic current of power capacitor from nonlinear loads is analyzed by the computer simulation and is experimentally verified.
