We investigated characteristics of temperature variation in urban and suburban areas(e.g., paddy field, upland, park, residential area) and urban heat island(UHI) during winter(December 2005 to February 2006). The daily maximum air temperature was not significantly different between suburban and urban areas, whereas the daily minimum air temperatures were significantly lower in the suburban areas than that in the residential area. The wind speed in the urban park(0.3 m/s) was much lower than that in the paddy fields(2.3 m/s), likely due to an urban canopy layer formed by high buildings. The UHI intensity was represented by differences in daily minimum temperatures between urban residential and paddy field areas. The UHI intensity($4.1^{\circ}C$) in winter was larger than that($2.6^{\circ}C$) in summer. This may be because a stable boundary layer develops in the winter, and thereby this inhibits diffusion of heat from surface.
Heat energy exchange is very important processes in the coastal wetland ecosystems. We observed and analyzed the net radiation flux, the sensible heat flux, the latent heat flux and the soil heat flux, which are balanced in the heat energy balance, over a reclaimed land covered with reeds at Goheung, Jeonllanamdo where is horizontally plane. The atmospheric turbulence had been measured in order to estimate the heat transfer during 5 intensive observation periods (IOPs). It was considered that the soil consists of water, fine particles, and vegetation canopy that changes color and density according to the season. We examined the characteristics of the heat flux and the vegetation effect on the air temperature control. It was noted that the heat was transported mainly by latent heat flux in the summer season and the vegetation canopy decreased the daily temperature range due to the heat storage. The air temperature was lower at the IOPs site than near urban area. This showed that the coastal wetland covered with the vegetation control the thermal environment.

The development of infrared thermometry has led many researchers to use plant temperatures, and specifically the temperature of the crop canopy in the field, for estimating the water stress of a crop. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of leaf temperature in irrigation scheduling. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with chinese cabbage. Leaf temperature was measured with infrared thermometry and evapotranspiration of the crop was measured by lysimeters. Influence of the difference between leaf temperature and air temperature on crop evapotranspiration was evaluated under varying water stress condition. A further objective was to evaluate the effect of other climatic variables on the relationship between evapotranspiration and temperature difference between leaf and air. A statistical model for estimating evapotranspiration using the temperature difference, relative humidity. and radiation was developed and tested. Crop water stress index was calculated using vapour pressure deficit and the temperature difference. Relations between the crop water stress index and crop evapotranspiration was tested. The index was closely related with evapotranspiration.

The climate of urban area is an unstable type with considerable seasonal variation in precipitation wind speed, and temperature and it grows worse. Besides, ozone is a serious air pollutant in most of large cities. So worldwide, some of large cities are investing in forestry options to offset their climate problems, but lack of information has hindered comparisons of urban un cost effectiveness to other options. This research intends to study the economic benefits of tree shading of 19 parking lots in UCD campus. The economic benefits of tree shading are air conditioning savings, air quality, stormwater run-off, and other benefits. Especially, this study focuses how much the economic benefit of parking lot shading has been increased from 1995 to 2003 year by aerophoto. Some data on dimensions of parking lots and the number, size, tree species, and location of trees around each parking lot was inventoried. Two aerophotos(1995,2003) were used in order to analyze the increasement of tree canopy in 19 parking lots for 8 years. However, increasing coverage of trees and managing them for healthy growth would not be sufficient for avoiding adverse impacts by future climate change. Additional measures should be followed such as an increase of energy use efficiency and development of substitute energy. For example, coverage of trees help to save cooling energy by blocking solar radiation reaching parking cars and building structures through shading, and creating cool micro-climates through evapotranspiration. They also reduce heating demand by decreasing air infiltration and heat conduction out of the interior of buildings. Proper arrangement of vegetation over the parking lots can reduce cooling and heating costs. So proper planting design around hard space paving including species selection and location can significantly save cooling and heating energy. And a reduction in car and building's heating and cooling costs results in the reduction in energy demand which causes to emissions of air pollutants. Total increased tree canopy from 1995 to 2003 is $8,470.45m^2$ and the economic benefits is US$ 5,282.10. The economic benefit of one tree has been US$ 7.21 for 8 years. And an annually increased benefit is US$ 0.9 per a tree. If this kind of study is applied to studying the economic benefits of tree canopy in parking lots of Korea, it could result in guidelines of tree planting of parking lots. Because the trees selected for planting in parking lots were not suitable for an environment, the guidelines should contain a recommended list of trees. The guidelines should propose the shading percentage of parking lot when we plan a parking lot and contain the maintenance of trees in order to maximize the economic benefits of tree canopy.
An accurate transpiration model for greenhouse tomato crop, which is liable to transpiration depression and yield loss because of low solar radiation and high humidity, could be an efficient tool for the optimum control of greenhouse climate and for the optimization of Irrigation scheduling. The purpose of this study was to develop transpiration model of greenhouse tomato and to carry out the experimental verification. The formulas to calculate the canopy transpiration and temperature simultaneously were derived from the energy balance of canopy. Transpiration and microclimate variables such as net radiation, solar radiation, humidity, canopy and air temperature, etc. were simultaneously measured to estimate parameters of model equations and to verify the suggested model. Leaf boundary layer resistance was calculated as a function of Nusselt number and stomatal diffusive resistance was parameterized by solar radiation and leaf-air vapor pressure deficit. The equation for stomatal diffusive resistance could explain more than 80% of its variation and the calculated stomatal diffusive resistance showed good agreements with the measured values in situations independent of which the constants of the equation were estimated. The canopy net radiation calculated by Stanghellini's model with slight modification agreed well with the measured values. The present transpiration model, into which afore-mentioned component equations were assembled, was found to predict the canopy temperature, instantaneous and daily transpiration with considerable accuracy in greenhouse climates.
Comparative drought resistances of 11 perennial warm-season turfgrasses were evaluated in the field after withholding irrigation for 48 days in summer I and 57 days in summer II. There were significant variations among the grasses in their drought resistances. From two years study of field shoot recovery from drought stress, the relative rankings among the 11 warm-season turfgrasses was as follows. 'Arizona Common' and 'Texturf 10' bermudagrasses [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.], 'Tifgreen' hybrid bermudagrass [C. dactylon (L.) Pers. ${\times}$ C. transvaalensis Davy], and 'Georgia Common' centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Mack.] possessed good drought resistances, whereas 'Texas Common' St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze] and 'Tifway' hybrid bermudagrass [Cyndon dactylon (L.) Pers ${\times}$ C. transvaalensis Davy] possessed poor drought resistances. 'Texas Common' buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.], 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge.), and 'Adalayd' seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz), 'Meyer' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), 'Emerald' zoysiagrass (Z. japonica Steud. ${\times}$ Z. tenuifolia Willd. ex Trin.) were found to rank intermediate. Visual leaf firing showed the highest correlation (r=-0.84) to shoot recovery from drought stress. Visual leaf rolling (r=-0.59) and canopy-air temperature differential (r=-0.64) also showed very significant correlations, whereas leaf water potential (r=0.54) showed relatively lower correlation.
The three Korean wheat cultivars with different plant types; the erect, the middle and the creeping growth habit, were studied for their utilization to solar radiation, temperature changes on the furrow and to provide optimum planting space for producing the high yield in 2003. The average solar radiation rate was lowest for creeping type ($39.2\%$) and highest for erect type ($75.8\%$) The correlation coefficient between the coverage rate and the solar transmission rate was r = 0.8624 which was significant at $5\%$ level. The relative growth of the plant, tiller rate and leaf size was increased in the erect and the middle type at lower plant density, while no change on plant growth at creeping type regardless of plant density. The increase of leaf size in the lower plant density was due to longer flag and the first leaf than those of other plant types. The temperature on the furrow of growing plants was changed by the canopy. The changes in temperature pattern on the furrow according to plant types during winter season was different compared to the non plant ground. The temperature of the nonplant ground was the lowest due to solar reduction increasing the amount of cool air flowing in the furrow.

This study aimed to estimate and evaluate the thermal mitigation of the urban tree canopy on the summer outdoor environment by quantitative use of mean radiant temperature. This study applied the SOLWEIG model based $T_{mrt}$ comparison method by using both (1) urban tree canopy presence examples and (2) urban tree canopy absence examples as constructed from airborne LiDAR system based three-dimensional point cloud data. As a result, it was found that an urban tree canopy can provide a decrease in the entire domain averaged daily mean $T_{mrt}$ about $5^{\circ}C$ and that the difference can increase up to $33^{\circ}C$ depending both on sun position and site conditions. These results will enhance urban microclimate studies such as indices (e.g., wind speed, humidity, air temperature) and biometeorology (e.g., perceived temperature) and will be used to support forest based public green policy development.

The purpose of this study is to build urban canopy model (Met Office Reading Urban Surface Exchange Scheme, MORUSES) based to Unified Model (UM) by using urban building information data in Seoul, and then to compare the improving urban canopy model simulation result with that of Seoul Automatic Weather Station (AWS) observation site data. UM-MORUSES is based on building information database in London, we performed a sensitivity experiment of UM-MOURSES model using urban building information database in Seoul. Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of 1.5 km resolution Seoul building data is applied instead of London building information data. Frontal-area index and planar-area index of Seoul are used to calculate building height. The height of the highest building in Seoul is 40m, showing high in Yeoido-gu, Gangnam-gu and Jamsil-gu areas. The street aspect ratio is high in Gangnam-gu, and the repetition rate of buildings is lower in Eunpyeong-gu and Gangbuk-gu. UM-MORUSES model is improved to consider the building geometry parameter in Seoul. It is noticed that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of wind speed is decreases from 0.8 to 0.6 m s-1 by 25 number AWS in Seoul. The surface air temperature forecast tends to underestimate in pre-improvement model, while it is improved at night time by UM-MORUSES model. This study shows that the post-improvement UM-MORUSES model can provide detailed Seoul building information data and accurate surface air temperature and wind speed in urban region.
