In this study, analysis of structural design criteria for the canopy actuating device has been conducted considering the aerodynamic breakaway capabilities of jettisonable canopy system. Unsteady aerodynamic loads for the opened canopy configuration at passively controlled jettision mode were computed using CFD method. The general purpose multi-body finite element code, SAMCEF Mecano, is used in the implemented analyses for the passive jettision condition. The recommended altitude and speed of aircraft was suggested as design criteria of aerodynamic breakaway capability of jettisonable canopy system as a bakup egress method when normal canopy jettison sequence malfunctioned. Aerodynamic breakaway condition of jettisonable canopy was also simulated and the fracture load conditions of canopy actuator were investigated.
This study was carried out to develop a real-time grouping system of chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy for precision agriculture. The system measured reflected light energy of a rice canopy on a paddy field from visual to near-infrared range and analyzed the collected information of chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy with given position data. The four filters, 560 nm $({\pm}10nm)$, 650 nm $({\pm}25nm)$, 700 nm $({\pm}12nm)$, and 850 nm $({\pm}40nm)$, were used for a multiple regression to estimate the chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy. Every $0.2m^2$ area of the open field was inspected at a distance of 1 m above the rice canopy. According to the results of verification test, the chlorophyll content grouping by a commerical chlorophyll meter (SPAD) and by the developed system showed 58.7% match for five-stage chlorophyll contents of rice crop canopy grouping and 93.5% for the $five{\pm}1-stage$ grouping. In addition, the results showed 63.0% match for three-stage grouping and 100.0% for the $three{\pm}1-stage$ grouping.
Characteristics of fruit tree canopies are important target information for adjusting the pesticide application rate in variable rate spraying in orchards. Therefore, the target detection of the canopy characteristics is very important. In this study, a canopy volume measurement method for peach trees was presented and a variable rate spraying system based on canopy volume measurement was developed using the ultrasonic sensing, one of the most effective target detection method. Ten ultrasonic sensors and two flow control units were mounted on the orchard air-assisted sprayer. The ultrasonic sensors were used to detect the canopy diameters and the flow controls were used to modify the flow rate of the nozzles in real time. Two treatments were established: a constant application rate of $300Lha^{-1}$ was set as the control treatment for the comparison with the variable rate application at a $0.095Lm^{-3}$ canopy. The tracer deposition at different parts of peach trees and the tracer losses to the ground (between rows and within rows) were analyzed in detail under constant rate and variable rate application. The results showed that there were no significant differences between two treatments in the liquid distribution and the capability to reach the inner parts of the crop canopies.
Many studies states that improperly uprising of infrastructure may cause leading the forest degradation and canopy reduction in many tropical forest of Asian countries. Other studies revealed that habitat destruction and fragmentation, edge effects, exotic species invasions, pollution are provoked by roads. Similarly, environmental effects of road construction in forests are problematic. Similarly, many researches have been indicated that roads have a far greater impact on forests than simply allowing greater access for human use. Moreover, people using river as means of transportation hence illegal logging and felling cause canopy depletion in many countries. Therefore, it is important to comprehend the study about spatial relation of road, river and suburb followed by temporal change of forest canopy phenomena. This study also tried to examine the effect of road, river and suburb in forest canopy density change of Terai forest of Nepal from you 1988 to 2001. So, Landsat TM88, 92 and 001 and FCD (Forest Canopy Density) mapper were used to perform the spatial .elation of canopy density change. ILWIS (Integrated Land and Water Information System) which is GIS software and compatible with remote sensing data was used to execute analysis and visualize the results. Study found that influence of distance to suburb and river had statistically significance influenced in canopy change. Though road also influenced canopy density much but didn't show a statistical relation. It can be concluded from this research that understanding of spatial relation of factors respect with canopy change is quite complex phenomena unless detail analysis of surrounding environment. Hence, it is better to carry out comprehensive analysis with other additional factors such as biophysical, anthropogenic, social, and institutional factors for proper approach of their effect on canopy change.
To understand forest structures, the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) instrument have been employed to measure and monitor forest canopy with feasibility of acquiring three dimensional canopy structure information. This study tried to examine the potential of GLAS dataset in measuring forest canopy structures, particularly maximum canopy height estimation. To estimate maximum canopy height using feasible GLAS dataset, we simply used difference between signal start and ground peak derived from Gaussian decomposition method. After estimation procedure, maximum canopy height was derived from airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and it was applied to evaluate the accuracy of that of GLAS estimation. In addition, several influences, such as topographical and biophysical factors, were analyzed and discussed to explain error sources of direct maximum canopy height estimation using GLAS data. In the result of estimation using direct method, a root mean square error (RMSE) was estimated at 8.15 m. The estimation tended to be overestimated when comparing to derivations of airborne LiDAR. According to the result of error occurrences analysis, we need to consider these error sources, particularly terrain slope within GLAS footprint, and to apply statistical regression approach based on various parameters from a Gaussian decomposition for accurate and reliable maximum canopy height estimation.
A hypothesis that artificial reforming of corn canopy could improve solar light penetration and dry matter production was tested in corn fields (var. Suwon 19) with three planting densities; low (60 ${\times}$ 40cm), medium (60 ${\times}$ 24cm) and high (60 ${\times}$ 16cm). Natural canopy was found that leaf orientations were even over all azimuth but somewhat inclined toward north-south direction and leaf angle ranged 38$^{\circ}$ to 71$^{\circ}$ from horizontal surface. Reforming corn canopy included following treatments: 1) natural canopy planted in north-south rows (natural canopy), 2)east-west plane canopy planted in north-south rows (E-W canopy), 3)east-west plane canopy and upright leaves in north-south rows, 4)north-south plane canopy (N-S canopy) in east-west rows. After corn plots were installed with training system by supporting poles and connecting wires, corn leaves were induced to a reforming direction and tied on wire. Average light intensity at the mid-point of plant height showed 5-10% increases in E-W canopy and in E-W canopy plus upright leaves, but a 2-10% decrease in N-S canopy from natural canopy. At yellow ripe stage, total dry wt. was increased in E-W canopy but not in N-S canopy. The E-W canopy produced 3-10% more grain yield than natural canopy. Though E-W canopy plus upright leaves yielded less at low density, it yielded up to 10% more at higher density. The N-S canopy yielded similar to low compared with natural canopy. These results suggests that reforming canopy toward solar incident direction increases light penetration into lower canopy, photosynthetic efficiency and grain yield, especially at high planting density in corn.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the function of microclimate amelioration of urban trees regarding the environmental benefits of street trees in summer, focusing on the heat pollution-urban heat island, tropical climate day's phenomenon and air pollution. We measured the diurnal variation of air/ground temperatures and humidity within the vegetation canopy with the meteorological tower observation system. Summertime air temperatures within the vegetation canopy layer were 1-2$^{\circ}C$ cooler than in places with no vegetation. Due to lack of evaporation, the ground surface temperatures of footpaths were, at a midafternoon maximum, 8$^{\circ}C$ hotter than those under trees. This means that heat flows from a place with no vegetation to a vegetation canopy layer during the daytime. The heat is consumed as a evaporation latent heat. These results suggest that the extension of vegetation canopy bring about a more pleasant urban climate. Diurnal variation of air/ground temperatures and humidity within the vegetation canopy were measured with the meteorological tower observation system. According to the findings, summertime air temperatures under a vegetation canopy layer were 1-2$^{\circ}C$ cooler than places with no vegetation. Due mainly to lack of evaporation the ground surface temperature of footpaths were up to 8$^{\circ}C$ hotter than under trees during mid-afternoon. This means that heat flows from a place where there is no vegetation to another place where there is a vegetation canopy layer during the daytime. Through the energy redistribution analysis, we ascertain that the major part of solar radiation reaching the vegetation cover is consumed as a evaporation latent heat. This result suggests that the expansion of vegetation cover creates a more pleasant urban climate through the cooling effect in summer. Vegetation plays an important role because of its special properties with energy balance. Depended on their evapotranspiration, vegetation cover and water surfaces diminish the peaks of temperature during the day. The skill to make the best use of the vegetation effect in urban areas is a very important planning device to optimize urban climate. Numerical simulation study to examine the vegetation effects on urban climate will be published in our next research paper.
Phenological variables derived from remote sensing are useful in determining the seasonal cycles of ecosystems in a changing climate. Satellite remote sensing imagery is useful for the spatial continuous monitoring of vegetation phenology across broad regions; however, its applications are substantially constrained by atmospheric disturbances such as clouds, dusts, and aerosols. By way of contrast, a tower-based ground remote sensing approach at the canopy level can provide continuous information on canopy phenology at finer spatial and temporal scales, regardless of atmospheric conditions. In this study, a tower-based ground remote sensing system, called the "Phenological Eyes Network (PEN)", which was installed at the Gwangneung Deciduous KoFlux (GDK) flux tower site in Korea was introduced, and daily phenological progressions at the canopy level were assessed using ratios of red, green, and blue (RGB) spectral reflectances obtained by the PEN system. The PEN system at the GDK site consists of an automatic-capturing digital fisheye camera and a hemi-spherical spectroradiometer, and monitors stand canopy phenology on an hourly basis. RGB data analyses conducted between late March and early December in 2009 revealed that the 2G_RB (i.e., 2G - R - B) index was lower than the G/R (i.e., G divided by R) index during the off-growing season, owing to the effects of surface reflectance, including soil and snow effects. The results of comparisons between the daily PEN-obtained RGB ratios and daily moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS)-driven vegetation indices demonstrate that ground remote sensing data, including the PEN data, can help to improve cloud-contaminated satellite remote sensing imagery.
This study is subway station canopy evaluation to improve the landscape of a street furniture design. From a survey of the professional abstracted the design elements of subway station canopy in Daegu. And then, it practiced a canopy design appreciation by the analysis of appreciation items. The results are as follows. First, this research analyzes each quality a classified by the four characteristics at the subway station. In general station case, the slope roof was consistent in used to be unified. If the symbol of the express station wasn't common in cross-section or material. In addition, the design evaluation in the lower canopy were evaluated. Therefore, in case of the city installed in the canopy, the characteristic of city gateway and the symbolic characteristic of a design that is required. Second, subway station canopy existed in widely opened site come out a lower rating about safety. Therefore, considering the safety light device or system need to do. Third, if the horizontal or sloping roof shape come out in a lower rating, the highly evaluated curve shape is considered to apply. Forth, a structure material of the canopy was highly evaluated the aluminum composite panels and structural steel pipes. Therefore, to improve a beauty of the city, to give rhythm to a structure material of the canopy of the aluminum composite panels and structural steel pipes will be desirable to use as the main ingredient.
Microwave polarimetric backscattering from a various types of grassland canopies has been analyzed by using the first-order radiative transfer theory in this paper. Leaves in the grassland are modeled by rectangular resistive sheets, which sizes (widths and lengths) and orientations (elevation and azimuth angles) are randomly distributed. Surface roughness and soil moisture of the ground plane under the grass canopy is considered in this computation. The backscattering coefficients of grasslands are computed for different radar parameters (angles, frequencies and Polarizations) as well as different canopy Parameters (size and orientation distributions of leaves, canopy depth, moisture contents of leaves and soil, rms height and correlation length of soil surface). A radar system for 15GHz has been fabricated and used for measurement of the scattering coefficient from a grass canopy. The computation result obtained by the scattering model for the grass canopy is compared with the measurements.
