Purpose: This study was done to compare educational needs for discharge after thyroid cancer surgery between patients and nurses. Methods: The participants were 107 patients who had thyroid cancer surgery and 70 nurses who have had experience of taking care of patients with thyroid cancer surgery at P hospital in Busan. The researcher reviewed the literature and conducted a preliminary survey to develop a questionnaire. Results: Although there was no significant difference in total perceived nursing discharge educational needs after thyroid cancer surgery between patients and nurses, both had a high level of nursing educational needs for discharge. The degree of patients' needs was higher than nurses in areas of dietary management after discharge and the degree of nurses' needs was higher than patients in the other areas. Although the first ranking area of educational needs was medication management for both patients and nurses, dietary management after discharge was the second ranking for patients and operation site and complication management was those for nurses. Conclusions: As the patients had different educational needs from the nurses, nurses need to focus on the patient's educational needs and provide relevant information. Educational programs should be developed and applied to post-surgical thyroid cancer patients.
Purpose: this study is attempted to provide basic data on development of systematic discharge educational programs for discharging cancer patients. Method: The subjects of this study were 132 mothers whose children were diagnosed with cancer and being treated at 3 university hospitals in Busan. The data were collected from December 1 to February 28, 2005, and were analyzed Using SPSS WIN 10.0. Result: The degree of education at the time of discharge from hospital was statistically significantly lower than that of educational demand after the discharge. Such demand significantly varied in accordance with the length of period passed after the discharge. Mother’s educational demand was significantly different in accordance with generation characteristics of her child with cancer, especially the first period of hospitalization and change in weight Conclusions: mothers of children with cancer were higher in educational demand after the child’s discharge from hospital than in education provided at the time of the discharge. Such demand was different in accordance with the length of period passed after the child's discharge from hospital.
This study intends to identify the characteristics of cancer in-patients and those of cancer patients who defected to other medical institutions based on the summary of hospital discharge information of a university hospital for the purpose of improving work efficiency and maximizing the number of patients. The study used data on cancer patients registered in the database of C University Hospital in Gyeonggi Province for a period of one year between January 1 and December 31. The analysis results suggest that the commonalities of the cancer patients who defected to other medical institutions include no specific job, old age, and hospitalization through emergency room. In conclusion, hospitals need to identify the characteristics of cancer patients classified as patients who are prone to defect and the defection factors through this prediction model.
Purpose : This study was conducted to determine the relationships between conditioned variables and the quality of life in the gastric cancer patients receiving chemotherapy after surgery. Method : 56 gastric cancer patients receiving chemotherapy included Cisplatin and 5-Fu were recruited from one university hospital located in Seoul. Questionnaires for this study were Quality of life Index developed by Padilla et al. at 1983, Rhode's nausea and vomiting scale and tool for side effects after chemotherapy at home developed by authors. Result : Quality of life in this study was correlated significantly with age, stage of cancer, nausea and vomiting, and level of side effects of chemotherapy. Quality of life of woman was lower than that of man. Conclusion : It is suggested that nurses be reinforce nurse's discharge education for the patients about increasing oral intake and preventing side effect after discharge from hospital and pay more attention to the change of the quality of life and relevant variables among the gastric cancer patients.
Purpose: This study was done to identify conditions of cancer patients who visited an emergency department (ED) with the side effects of chemotherapy. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from medical records of 294 cancer patients who visited a tertiary hospital in 2009 for treatment of side effects of chemotherapy. Records were reviewed for characteristics of participants and side effects of chemotherapy. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: ED Triage grade 3 was 81.6%. The hospitalization ratio was 72.8%, and 6.5% died during the admission. Most frequent side effects were thrombocytopenia (80.6%), anemia (74.5%), pain (52.0%), neutropenia (50.7%), and leucopenia (46.3%). The hospitalization group showed more severe leucopenia than the discharge group (p=.020). Patients in the group who died had higher scores for dyspnea compared to patients discharged or hospitalized (p<.05). Conclusion: Results of the study suggest that there is a special need to develop a system to manage side effects of chemotherapy. Also it is necessary to provide appropriate care and treatment with prompt initial evaluation when cancer patients with side effects of chemotherapy present in the ED. More effective educational discharge programs should also be developed to help these patients cope with various side effects of chemotherapy.
The purpose of this study was to develop a continuing nursing care program for cancer patients and the caregivers staying at their home and to test its effects on patients' symptom distress, caregiver burden, and satisfaction of life. The continuing nursing care program was based on the homecare needs of cancer patients, and was provided by three clinical nurses who took care of the patients while they were hospitalized. The program consisted of discharge education about selfcare using education materials(book and handout) and provisions of direct care. These were counselling and education during which visiting patients' home one week after discharge and telephone counseling two weeks after discharge. Counseling by telephone was always available during the research period. A quasi-experimental research design was used to test the effects of the program. Subjects for this study were 53 cancer patients discharged from the hospital and caregivers. These subjects were assigned to an experimental group (n=23) receiving continuous nursing care, or to a control group (n=30) not receiving continuous nursing care. Data from control group was collected first to protect from contamination. Data collection was done from October of 1998 to February of 2000. The collected data was analysed using mean, t-test, and chi-square test computed by SPSS software. The summary of results was as follows: 1) The symptom distress was a little decreased at posttest, but there were no significant differences between the experimental and the control group in symptom distress. 2) The score of caregiver burden was significantly decreased in experimental group at posttest, but no differences in control group. 3) There were no significant differences between the experimental and control group in the satisfaction of life. 4) The score of satisfaction of continuing nursing care program in experimental group at posttest was 2.321 of 3. In conclusion, even though this study did not obtain evidence of effectiveness of continuing nursing care program on patients, such as. It is still expected to be effective by a more improved program. Therefore we want to give some suggestions for further studies. 1) It is needed to make a communication channel with the patient's doctor to response promptly and appropriately to patient's conditions. 2) The research is necessary on patients in terminal stage or early stage of cancer diagnosis who have many nursing needs. 3) It is needed to readjust the roles and job assignment of clinical nurse to implement effectively as a program provider.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the nutritional status and dietary intake of gastrectomized cancer patients. For this study, from 1993. 1 to 1993. 8, 50 postoperative gastric cancer patients were selected to examine anthropometric and laboratory data(Body Weight, Body Fat, serum Albumin, Total Lympocyte count), and dietary intake related symptoms. The results were 1) All anthropometric and laboratory data were significantly deteriorated by gastrectomy(s-Albumin, TLC. Body Fat : p<0.001). Weight loss of gastrectomized patients was 8.23$\pm$3.72% from admission to discharge. 2) In many gastrectomized cancer patients, preoperative dietary intake was decreased by abdominal discomfort, indigestion, early satiety, and anorexia. 3) Postoperative energy intake was 602$\pm$158㎉, and it is correspond to 31.18$\pm$.90% of daily energy requirement(1918$\pm$236㎉). The cause of poor oral intake is mostly fear, abdominal distension and fullness, and early satiety. In consideration of the fact that an inadequate energy intake was the main cause of the decreasing nutritional status, a careful nutritional care and dietary education is necessry after gastrectomy.
The purpose of the research was to determine the effect of home care service on the quality of life in patients with gynecological cancer. This randomized case control study was carried out in a womans hospital between September 2011 and February 2012. Women undergoing gynecological cancer treatment were separated into intervention and control groups, of 35 patients each. The intervention group was provided with nursing care service through hospital and home visits ($1^{st}$, $12^{th}$ weeks) within the framework of a specifically developed nursing care plan. The control group was monitored without any intervention through the hospital routine protocols ($1^{st}$, $12^{th}$ weeks). Data were collected using An Interview Form, Home Visit Monitoring Form and Quality of Life Scale/Cancer Survivors. Effects of home care service on the quality of life in gynecological cancer patients were investigated using chi-square tests, McNemar's test, independent t-test and ANOVA. This study found that the intervention group receiving home care service had a moderately high quality of life (average mean: $6.01{\pm}0.64$), while the control group had comparatively lower quality (average mean: $4.35{\pm}0.79$) within the 12 week post-discharge period (p<0.05). This study found home care services to be efficient in improving the quality of life in patients with gynecological cancer.
Background: The human papilloma virus (HPV) is considered as the major risk factor for the development of cervical cancer. This virus is of different genotypes and generally can be classified into high and low risk types. Objective: To determine the rate of high risk HPV genotypes in women with vaginal discharge and lower abdominal pain in Kurdistan region, Iraq. Materials and Methods: Cervical swabs were taken from 104 women. DNA was extracted and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to determine the presence of high risk genotypes. Results: It was found that 13/104 (12.5%) of the samples were positive for high risk HPV genotypes. Amongst those who were positive, 4/13 (30.7%) were typed as genotype 16 and 7/13 (53.8%) showed mixed genotyping. On the other hand, genotypes 53 and 56 were found in only one sample each. Conclusions: High risk HPV genotypes are not uncommon and further community based study is needed to determine the prevalence of HPV and its genotypes and plan for prevention of infection.
From July 1990 to August 1992,78 Hickman catheters and 22 chemoports were inserted in 98 patients for chemotherapy. We analyzed the clinical data of these patients. The results were as follows: 1]Mean age of patients was 42.8$\pm$1.6[SE] years 2]Male to female ratio was 1.09:1 3]The diseases of the cases were leukemia[66] ,lymphoma[8], stomach cancer[8],uterine cervix cancer[5],ovarian cancer[4],lung cancer[3],aplastic anemia[2],maxillary gland cancer[1],pancreas cancer[1],malignant mesothelioma[1] and multiple myeloma[1] 4]Mean values of preoperative WBC counts, platelet counts,PT and APTT were 31,500$\pm$ 8,132[SE]/mm,104,000$\pm$ 12,200 [SE]/mm,82$\pm$ 1.9[SE]% and 32$\pm$ 0.8[SE] sec, respectively. 5]The average duration of catheter uses was 121.7$\pm$ 17.3[SE]days. 6]The complications were subcutaneous tunnel bleeding or hematoma[2],exit site or subcutaneous tunnel infection[2] and catheter related septicemia[1]. 7]The causes of catheter removal were patient`s death or hopeless discharge[22],completion of treatment[6],subcutaneus hematoma or bleeding[2],exit site or subcutaneous tunnel infection[2] and catheter related septicemia[1].So,we concluded that Hickman catheter and chemoport were useful vascular access for chemotherapy in patients with malignant diseases, with low rate of complication and longterm duration.
