Protective Effect of Panax ginseng extract on Renal Functions Altered by Mercuric Chloride in Albino Rats

  • Liver and kidney are specific organs which play an active role in biotransformation and detoxification mechanisms. Ant adverse effect of chemicals or heavy metal can cause the delay or fade in these mechanisms. Present study was designed to find out the protective effect of Panax ginseng extract on renal functions altered by mercuric chloride (heavy metal) in albino rat. Fifty albino rats were divided into 10 groups. Five groups for acute study and five groups for sud-acute study viz. control group (Tween 20 and distilled water), mercuric chloride treated group (0.926 mg/kg body wt. for acute and 0.044 mg/kg body wt. for sub-acute group after calculated $LD_{50}$ (9.26 mg/kg body wt.) by probit analysis (Finney, 1971), Panax ginseng extract treated group (10 mg/kg body wt. for acute and sub-acute sets), mercuric chloride treated followed by Panax ginseng extract and Panax ginseng extract followed by mercuric chloride group. All doses were given orally by gavage tube. The result revealed that the serum urea and creatinine significantly increased in mercuric chloride treated group, while significantly decreased (p<0.01) in Panax ginseng extract group after acute and sub-acute treatment. The biochemical estimation is also confirmed by nephropathological aspect. However, the Panax ginseng extract treated followed by mercuric chloride group is more prominent than the mercuric chloride treated followed by Panax ginseng extract group. It can be concluded that Panax ginseng extract had a protective nature on renal functions against mercuric chloride toxicity in albino rats.

  • Adverse changes in individual's biochemistry under heavy metal stress are directly linked with its metabolic activity and health status. The present investigation highlights the differences in protecting role of Panax ginseng extract against mercuric chloride induced alterations in serum proteins. The assessment was based on dividing fifty albino rats into two sets, one for acute and the other for sub-acute study. All the sets had five groups with five albino rats in each i.e. control group, mercuric chloride treated group, Panax ginseng extract treated group, mercuric chloride followed by Panax ginseng extract treated group and Panax ginseng extract followed by mercuric chloride treated group. Mercuric chloride was given orally 0.926 mg/kg body weight for acute set and 0.044 mg/kg body weight for sub-acute set after LD50 (9.26 mg/kg body weight) determination by probitt analysis. 10 mg/kg body weight Panax ginseng extract was given in both acute and sub-acute sets after incorporating safety trials. The control group received tween-20 and distilled water only. The result exhibited significantly reduction (P<0.01) in serum protein, albumin and globulin following mercuric chloride intoxication whereas significant (P<0.01) enhancement in other groups with Panax ginseng extract as an ingredient confirming its protective role. All serum samples were also electrophoresed in 10% SDS with standard marker using discontinuous buffering system. Gradual disappearance of alpha-2 and beta-1 globulin bands from electrophoretic pattern was observed, while a single sharp band was observed between beta-2 and gamma globulin in serum protein pattern of acutely mercuric chloride treated rats. However, this band could not be visualized in sub-acute studies. Panax ginseng extract exhibits a better protection after acute intoxication.

  • 본 논문은 도시환경과 장소마케팅을 통한 가로환경시설물 디자인 방향에 대한 내용으로 대상공간은 서울 종로구에 위치한 대학로이다. 디지털 정보화 사회의 도래에 따른 생활양식과 행태 변화를 중심으로 대학로에 대한 역사적 고찰과 장소마케팅전략, 공간특성의 변화, 가로환경 및 가로환경시설물의 현황 조사 및 이용자특성의 분석을 통하여 앞으로 대학로의 이미지 개선과 문화의 거리로써의 정체성을 회복하고 활성화를 위한 가로환경시설물의 역할과 디자인 방향을 제시하였다. 새롭게 제시된 가로환경시설물 체계 및 디자인 접근 방법은 지속적이고 종합적인 계획의 필요성을 강조하였고 대학로의 이미지 개선 및 문화적 특성을 부각시켜 이용자 뿐 만 아니라 지역주민 삶의 질적 개선과 지역경제 활성화에 기여하고 관광지로써 재평가될 수 있도록 하였다.

Identification of Pisolithus tinctorius from GNU Campus

  • Globose to clavate base-ball sized, pear shaped, fruiting bodies were found under the Himalayan cedar, Cedrus deodora at less fertile and poor sandy poor soil in the campus of Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, Korea. The fruiting body was at first, round to club-shaped, usually with a narrow, rooting base with yellowish rhizomorphs attached to it and lack a volva and a sterile base. The peridium of fruiting body was tough and crusty. The peridioles were white pea-like capsules in a blackish matrix. The color change to darker tints of brown at the top of the exterior peridium reflected the gradual ripening of the interior gleba and peridioles, which proceeded from the top downward to become a mass of spore dust, appearing as cinnamon brown at the apex of the vertical section. At around this stage, the peridium cracked open linearly, exposing the gleba with powdery spores mass released from overmatured peridioles. Spores were more or less round, warty or spiny, 10 to $12{\mu}m$; globose, cinnamon brown in powdery mass, with spines up to $2{\mu}m$ long. The thin peridium ruptured further in response to the disintegration of the peridioles, releasing the powdery spores, which proceeded until whole fruiting body disappeared leaving the dry spore dust coats in the vicinity. The absence of a capillitium is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes the specimen from other puff-ball fungi and from most of earthballs. Based on the above characteristics, the specimen was identified as Poslithus tinctorius.

대학생의 대학생활 스트레스와 대처방식, 자아존중감, 부적응적 완벽주의가 자살생각에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Campus Life Stress, Stress Coping Type, Self-esteem, and Maladjustment Perfectionism on Suicide Ideation among College Students)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 남녀 대학생을 대상으로 사회인구학적 특성과 대학생활 스트레스, 스트레스 대처방식, 자아존중감, 부적응적 완벽주의가 자살생각에 미치는 영향을 규명함으로써 대학생의 자살예방정책 마련을 위한 시사점을 제공하는데 있다. 부산경남지역 대학생 350명을 대상으로 자기기입식 설문조사방법으로 자료를 수집하여 실증 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자살생각은 사회인구학적 특성 중 대학생활 만족도에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 즉, 대학생활만족도가 낮은 그룹에서 자살생각이 강했다. 둘째, 제변수들의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 자살생각은 자아존중감, 대학생활 만족도, 적극적 스트레스 대처방법인 문제중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로 뚜렷한 역의 상관관계를 보이고 있고 반면에, 부적응적 완벽주의, 대학생활 스트레스, 소극적 스트레스 대처인 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로는 뚜렷한 정의 상관관계를 보였다. 즉 자아존중감이 높을수록, 대학생활 만족도가 높을수록, 문제중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 낮아지고, 부적응적 완벽주의가 높을수록, 대학생활 스트레스가 높을수록, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 높아지는 것으로 분석된다. 셋째, 연구 대상자의 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 요인을 규명하기 위한 회귀 분석의 결과, 부적응적 완벽주의, 대인관계 스트레스, 남학생, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로 유의한 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 자아존중감은 유의한 역의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 자아존중감의 영향이 가장 컸다. 즉, 부적응적 완벽주의가 높을수록, 대인관계 스트레스가 높을수록, 여학생보다 남학생에서, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 높아지고, 자아존중감이 높을수록 자살생각은 낮아지는 것으로 분석된다. 이상의 결과를 종합하면, 대학생활만족도를 높이기 위한 노력이 대학생의 자살생각을 완화시키는 효과가 있으며, 대학생의 자살예방을 위해서는 대인관계 기술 향상과 스트레스 대처방식의 개선, 부적응적 완벽주의 성향의 완화, 그리고 자아존중감 강화를 위한 교육 및 훈련이 필요함을 시사한다. 특히 대학생의 자아존중감 향상을 위한 다각적인 방안의 모색이 중요하다고 판단된다.

정성적 소비자 조사를 통한 오미자에 대한 소비자 인식연구 (Consumer Awareness on Omija using Qualitative Consumer Research)

  • The objective of this study was to determine current consumer awareness of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Bailon) fruit in order to develop ready-to-drink (RTD) Omija-flavored beverages using qualitative consumer analysis. A series of four different focus group interview sessions were conducted using carefully chosen consumers with specific demographics, and each group involved eight respondents. Consumer's qualitative reactions regarding Omija fruit, Omija extract products, ready-to-drink beverages and Omija-flavored RTD beverages were explored. Distinct differences in consumer awareness and consumption patterns of Omija extract and RTD beverages were observed between consumers in their 20s and consumers in their 30s to 50s. The expected sensory characteristics of Omija-flavored RTD beverages were also different based on participants' age. Findings from the current study can aid product developers utilizing Omija fruit by providing valuable insights into current consumer behavior and consumer awareness regarding Omija.

Effect of building proximity on external and internal pressures under tornado-like flow

  • Tornadoes are one of the world's deadliest natural phenomena. They are characterized by short life span and danger. It has been observed through post-damage surveys that localities with large numbers of buildings suffer major damage during a tornado attack resulting in huge loss of life and property. Thus,it is important to study interfering buildings exposed to tornado-like vortices. The present study focuses on external and internal pressures developed on building models exposed to translating tornado-like vortices in the presence of an interfering building model. The effects of translating speed and swirl ratio of a tornado-like vortex on external and internal pressures for a principal building in the vicinity of an interfering building are investigated. Results indicate that external and internal pressures are enhanced or reduced depending on the location of the interfering building with respect to the principal building.

New Korean Record of Twenty Eight Species of the Family Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera)

  • We report twenty eight ichneumonid species new to Korea. These species belong to seven subfamilies. Among them five subfamilies, Diacritinae Townes, 1965, Microleptinae Townes, 1958, Orthocentrinae F$\ddot{o} $rster, 1869, Orthopelmatinae Schmiedeknecht, 1910, Phrudinae Townes and Townes, 1949, are newly introduced to Korean fauna. All specimens are based on the insect collection of animal systematic laboratory at the Yeungnam University Gyeongsan Campus. Photographs of habitus of newly recorded subfamilies, diagnosis of 28 species and host information are provided.

여대생의 비만도와 칼슘 섭취량과의 관련성 연구 (Relationship between the Risk of Obesity and Calcium Intake for Female College Students)

  • This study examined the effects of calcium intake on body weight and body fat in female college students. Surveys were conducted using a 3 day dietary record of 248 female university students in Korea. The subjects were divided into three groups by percent body fat. There was no significant difference in energy intake among the three groups. The intake of calcium the obese group was lower than that of other groups but it was not significantly lower. There was a negative correlation between yogurt intake and body fat in the normal group. The study did not discover a correlation between calcium intake and body fat. However, our results might encourage further research in finding a possible role of dietary calcium in the prevention of obesity.

Mycorrhizal Synthesis of Périgord Black Truffle (Tuber melanosporum) with Mexican Oak Species

  • The Périgord black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) is an edible fungus and among the most expensive foods worldwide. It is the basis of a multimillion-dollar bio-business. Truffle farming does not exist in Mexico, and no formal studies have been conducted on its culture. This report describes the mycorrhizal synthesis (i.e., artificial union of fungus with host) of T. melanosporum with oak species native to Mexico (Quercus polymorpha, Q. fusiformis, and Q. canbyi). The mycorrhizal association was successful in Q. polymorpha and Q. fusiformis, as confirmed morphologically and using T. melanosporum molecular primers (ITSML/ITS4LNG). The effect of the ectomycorrhizal fungus on host growth (stem diameter) was statistically significant. Illustrations of the study are presented.
