  • The information of traversability and path planning is essential for UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) navigation. Such information can be obtained by analyzing 3D terrain. In this paper, we present the method of 3D terrain modeling with color information from a camera, precise distance information from a 2D Laser Range Finder(LRF) and wheel encoder information from mobile robot with less data. And also we present the method of 3B terrain modeling with the information from GPS/IMU and 2D LRF with less data. To fuse the color information from camera and distance information from 2D LRF, we obtain extrinsic parameters between a camera and LRF using planar pattern. We set up such a fused system on a mobile robot and make an experiment on indoor environment. And we make an experiment on outdoor environment to reconstruction 3D terrain with 2D LRF and GPS/IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit). The obtained 3D terrain model is based on points and requires large amount of data. To reduce the amount of data, we use cubic grid-based model instead of point-based model.

  • For construction of 3D virtual city models, airborne digital cameras, laser scanners, multi-oblique photograph systems and other devices are currently being used. With such advanced techniques, precise 3D spatial information can be collected and high quality 3D city models can be built in a considerably large area. The 3D spatial information to be built has to provide the latest information that quickly reflects the causes of any change due to urban development. In this study, a UAV photogrammetric method using low cost UAV and digital camera was proposed to acquire and update 3D spatial information effectively on small areas where information continuously change. In the proposed UAV photogrammetric method, the elements of interior orientation were acquired through camera calibration and the vertical and oblique photographs were taken at 9 points and the 3D drawing of ground control points and buildings was performed using 20 images among the pictured images. This study also analyzed the accuracy of the proposed method comparing with ground survey data and digital map in order to examine whether the method can be used in on-demand 3D spatial information update on relatively small areas.

  • In this paper, we discussed about the volume monitoring system of a landfill facility. We proposed the waste volume calculation method using the point cloud of the surface of three dimensional object by measurement of the point cloud by the three dimensional scanner, which is based upon the robot technique. This computes not only the quantity of waste volume for continuos monitoring but also it helps not only to predict the evaluation factor of the usable age of a landfill. facility. Furthermore, the measuring system of waste volume was applied to the landfill facility in Ansung city.

  • This study deals with image-based visual servoing for automatic recharging of mobile robot. Because mobile robot must be recharged periodically, it is necessary to detect and move to docking station. Generally, laser scanner is used for detect of position of docking station. CCD Camera is also used for this purpose. In case of using cameras, the position-based visual servoing method is widely used. But position-based visual servoing method requires the accurate calibration and it is hard and complex work. Another method using cameras is image-based visual servoing. Recently, image based visual servoing is widely used for robotic application. But it has a problem that cannot have linear trajectory in the 3-dimensional space. Because of this weak point, image-based visual servoing has a limit for real application. In case of 2-dimensional movement on the plane, it has also similar problem. In order to solve this problem, we point out the main reason of the problem of the resolved rate control method that has been generally used in the image-based visual servoing and we propose an image-based visual servoing method that can reduce the curved trajectory of mobile robot in the cartesian space.

  • In the present study, oxygen transfer process across gas-liquid interface in a Y-shape micro-channel is quantitatively visualized using the micro laser induced fluorescence (${\mu}$-LIF) technique. Diffusion coefficient of Oxygen ($D_L$) is estimated based on the experimental results and compared to its theoretical value. Tris ruthenium (II) chloride hexahydrate was used as the oxygen quenchable fluorescent dye. A light-emitting diode (LED) with wavelength of 450 nm was used as the light source and phosphorescence images of fluorescent dye were captured by a CMOS high speed camera installed on the microscope system. Water having dissolved oxygen (DO) value of 0% and pure oxygen gas were injected into the Y-shaped microchannel by using a double loading syringe pump. In-situ pixel-by-pixel calibration was carried out to obtain Stern-Volmer plots over whole flow field. Instantaneous DO concentration fields were successfully mapped according to Stern-Volmer plots and DL was calculated as $2.0675{\times}10^{-9}\;m^2/s$.

  • In Computer Vision-based pose computation systems, markers are often used as reference points: artificially-designed (to maximize the efficiency in detection) markers are installed in the environment and their positions are measured using probing devices such as mechanical digitizers and laser range finders. The camera (or the user) pose is computed based on three or more markers 3D positions and the 2D positions in the image. However, in extended environments, it is impractical to install enough number of markers to be detected by the camera. Instead, natural features, if detected and tracked efficiently, can be used as reference points. These natural features 3D positions need to be measured before they can be used as reference points. In this paper, technologies of utilizing natural features are introduced for pose computation or refinement in extended environments.

  • The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and implementation of an unmanned ground vehicle, called the TailGator at CIMAR (Center for Intelligent Machines and Robotics) of the University of Florida. The TailGator is a gas powered, four-wheeled vehicle that was designed for the AUVSI Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition and has been tested in the contest for 2 years. The vehicle control model and design of the sensory systems are described. The competition is comprised of two events called the Autonomous Challenge and the Navigation Challenge: For the autonomous challenge, line following, obstacle avoidance, and detection are required. Line following is accomplished with a camera system. Obstacle avoidance and detection are accomplished with a laser scanner. For the navigation challenge, waypoint following and obstacle detection are required. The waypoint navigation is implemented with a global positioning system. The TailGator has provided an educational test bed for not only the contest requirements but also other studies in developing artificial intelligence algorithms such as adaptive control, creative control, automatic calibration, and internet-base control. The significance of this effort is in helping engineering and technology students understand the transition from theory to practice.

  • Inspecting the dimensional accuracy of a car-body in assembly line is a very important process to assure high productivity. Now there exist two common inspecting methods in practice. One is to measure a sampled car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body with three dimensional measuring machine, and the other is to measure car-body in assembly line using many sensors fixed to a large jig frame. The formal method takes too long to inspect a sampled car-body of a same sort, and cannot therefore give an useful error trend for the whole production. On the other hand, the latter lacks flexibility and is very cost-intensive. By using industrial robots and sensors, an in-line Car-Body Measuring(CBM) system which ensured high flexiblity and sufficient accuracy was developed. This CBM cell operates in real production line and measures the check points by the non-contact type using camera and laser displacement sensor(LDS). This system can handle about 15 Measuring points within a cycle time of 40 seconds. A process computer controls whole process such as data acquisition file handling and data analysis. Robot arms changes in length due to ambient temperature fluctuation affecting the measuring accuracy. To compensate this error, a robot arm calibration process was developed.
