  • This paper addresses the effective and quantitative image DB construction for the development of front looking camera systems. The automotive industry has expanded the capability of front camera solutions that will help ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance System) applications targeting Euro NCAP function requirements. These safety functions include AEB(Autonomous Emergency Braking), TSR(Traffic Signal Recognition), LDW(Lane Departure Warning) and FCW(Forward Collision Warning). In order to guarantee real road safety performance, the driving image DB logged under various real road conditions should be used to train core object classifiers and verify the function performance of the camera system. However, the driving image DB would entail an invalid and time consuming task without proper guidelines. The standard working procedures and design factors required for each step to build an effective image DB for reliable automotive front looking camera systems are proposed.

  • Typical operating method for long-range observation cameras are to detect the target at a wide angle of view and to recognize/identify the target with a telephoto angle of view. And the detection/recognition range performance is an important item to evaluate the performance of the defense infrared camera. To increased the detection range performance, the camera's field of view should be narrowed. Due to the narrow field of view, the probability of finding target is relatively low. In this paper, we propose a method to search for target by providing a wide angle view while maintaining detection range performance. M&S and optimized design were used to develop infrared camera with extended field of view and the results of the test summarized.

  • It is necessary to apply a non-contact high-speed scanning system that can measure in real time in order to prevent the dropping and deformation of the main parts of railway vehicles during high-speed running. Recently, research on a scanning system that detects the deformation state of main parts from a video image taken using a high-performance camera has been actively pursued. In this study, we researched an analysis algorithm of a high-speed scanning system that uses a high-performance camera to monitor the deformation and drop-out state of the main components of the running units equipment in real time.

  • In this paper, we studied the performance evaluation of a vehicular rear-view camera through quantifying the image quality based on several objective criteria from the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). In addition, various experimental environments are defined considering the conditions under which a rear-view camera may need to operate. The process for evaluating the performance of a rear-view camera is composed of five objective criteria: noise test, resolution test, OECF (opto-electronic conversion function) test, color characterization test, and pincushion and barrel distortion tests. The proposed image quality quantification method then expresses the results of each test as a single value, allowing easy evaluation.

  • We propose a novel framework for markerless camera-based games. By using a visual camera, our method may yield robust human body segmentation with high performance comparable to the segmentation using depth cameras. The edges of human bodies are detected by subtracting gradient backgrounds, and human body regions are segmented by the operations based on mathematical morphology. Collisions between detected regions and virtual objects are determined by finding the colliding time using intra-frame positions of virtual objects. Experimental results show that the proposed method may produce robust segmentation of human bodies, thereby and the collision responses are more accurate than previous methods. Therefore, the proposed framework can be widely used in camera-based games requiring high performance.

  • In this paper, we present a low-cost fire detection system using a thermal camera and a smartphone. The developed system collects thermal and RGB videos from the developed camera. To detect fire, candidate fire regions are extracted from videos obtained using a thermal camera. The block mean of variation of adjacent frames is measured to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the candidate fire regions. After analyzing the dynamic characteristics of regions of interest, a fire is determined by the candidate fire regions. In order to evaluate the performance of our system, we compared with a smoke detector, a heat detector, and a flame detector. In the experiments, our fire detection system showed the excellent performance in detecting fire with an overall accuracy rate of 97.8 %.

  • We have been developing a solar observing system based on a fast CCD camera 1M30P made by the DALSA company. Here we examine and present the characteristics and performance of the camera. For this we have analyzed a number of images of a flat wall illuminated by a constant light source. As a result we found that in the default operating mode 1) the mean bias level is 49 ADU/pix, 2) the mean dark current is about 8 ADU /s/pix, 3) the readout noise is 1.3 ADU, and 4) the gain is about 42 electrons/ ADU. The CCD detector is found to have a linearity with a deviation smaller than $6\%$, and a uniform sensitivity better than $1\%$. These parameters will be used as basic inputs in the analysis of data to be taken by the camera.

  • Compare with other communication system based RF technology, Optical Camera Communication (OCC) has limitation on data rate due to the low frame rate of camera. The limitation on data rate can be solved with multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology; and it is the final target of all researches on OCC. The MIMO topology can be implemented easily without breaking out the architecture of image sensor. For image sensor classification, there are two architectures have been developed: rolling shutter and global shutter. The operation of two techniques is different so the performance is also different. In this paper we analyze and evaluate the performance of the MIMO architecture for OCC.

  • In this paper, we developed a network camera for CMOS camera module inspection. The design, implementation details including embedded linux porting and CPLD logics, and performance of network camera are described. The network camera consists of SoC(S3C4530A), CPLD and CMOS image sensor. In order to image data of CMOS image sensor we designed capture logics on CPLD by using VHDL program. Embedded Linux such as uClinux is performed on the network camera to utilize development environment and TCP/IP protocol specification. The application is based on socket communication between GUI on PC and Embedded Linux based network camera. When JPEG compression is applied, the transmission speed was improved enough for this system to be used for an alternative of expensive CCTV or remote monitoring system in a power plant and uninhabited places.

  • The performance of the payload Electro-Optical System (EOS) in satellite system is affected by various factors, such as optics design, camera electronics design, and the characteristics of the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) used, etc. Of these factors, the camera electronics design is somewhat unique in that its operational parameters can be adjusted even after the satellite launch. In this paper, the effect of video gain on the non-uniformity correction performance is addressed. And a new optimal non-uniformity correction scheme is proposed and analyzed using the data from real camera electronics unit based on a TDI (Time Delayed Integration) type of CCD. The test results show that the performance of the conventional non-uniformity correction scheme is affected significantly when the video gain is added. On the other hand, in our proposed scheme, the performance is not dependent on the video gain. The insensitivity of the non-uniformity performance on the video-gain is mainly due to the fact that the correction is performed after the dark signal is subtracted from system response.
