  • Augmented reality based on projection, called "Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR)", is a new technology that can produce immersive contents by overlapping virtuality and real-world environment. It has been paid attention as the next generation digital contents in media art and human-computer interaction (HCI). In this paper, we present a new methodology to evaluate the product appearance design more intuitively by means of SAR technique. The proposed method first projects the high-quality rendered image considering the optical property of materials onto the mock-up of a product. We also conduct a projector-camera calibration to compensate a color distortion according to a projector, a projection surface and environment lighting. The design evaluation methodology we propose offers more flexible and intuitive evaluation environment to a designer and user (evaluator) than previous methods that are performed via a digital display. At the end of this research, we have conducted a case study for designing and evaluating appearance design of an automobile.

  • A near infrared wide-band high resolution spectrograph, immersion grating infrared spectrometer (IGRINS) has been jointly developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute and the University of Texas at Austin. The compact white-pupil design of the instrument optics includes five cryogenic flat mirrors including a slit mirror, an input fold mirror, a dichroic mirror, and H&K camera fold mirrors. In this study, we introduce the optomechanical mount designs of the five cryogenic mirrors. In order to meet the structural stability and thermal requirements of the mount models, we conducted the design work with the aid of 3-dimensional computer modeling and the finite element analysis (FEA) method. We also present the actual fabricated parts and assemblies of the mounts and mirrors as well as their CAD models.

  • Industrial processes are normally operated by skilled humans who have the cumulative and logical information about the system. Fuzzy control has been investigated for many application. Intelligent control approaches based on fuzzy logic have a chance to include human thinking. This paper represents modeling approach based upon operators knowledge without mathematical model of the system and optimize the controller. The experimented system is constructed for sending a ball to the goal position using wind of two DC motors in the predefined path. A vision camera to mimic human eyes detects the ball position. The system used in this experiment could be hardly modeled by mathematical methods and ould not be easily controlled by conventional manners. The controller is designed based on the input-output data and experimental knowledge obtained by trials, and optimized under the predefined performance criterion. And this paper shows the data adaptation for changeable operating condition. When the system is driven in the abnormal condition with unconsidered noise, the new optimal operating parameters could be defined by adjusting membership functions. Thus, this technique could be applied in industrial fields.

  • This paper proposes an exploration strategy to efficiently find a specific place in large unknown environments with wall-following based path planning. Many exploration methods proposed so far showed good performance but they focused only on efficient planning for modeling unknown environments. Therefore, to successfully accomplish the room finding task, two additional requirements should be considered. First, suitable path-planning is needed to recognize the room number. Most conventional exploration schemes used the gradient method to extract the optimal path. In these schemes, the paths are extracted in the middle of the free space which is usually far from the wall. If the robot follows such a path, it is not likely to recognize the room number written on the wall because room numbers are usually too small to be recognized by camera image from a distance. Second, the behavior which re-explores the explored area is needed. Even though the robot completes exploration, it is possible that some rooms are not registered in the constructed map for some reasons such as poor recognition performance, occlusion by a human and so on. With this scheme, the robot does not have to visit and model the whole environment. This proposed method is very simple but it guarantees that the robot can find a specific room in most cases. The proposed exploration strategy was verified by various experiments.

  • Any given object on the motor-driven turntable is pictured from 8 to 72 different views with a digital camera. 3D shape reconstruction is performed with the integrated software called by Scanware from these multiple digital photographs. There are several steps such as configuration, calibration, capturing, segmentation, shape creation, texturing and merging process during the shape reconstruction process. 3D geometry data can be exported to cad data such as Autocad input file. Also 3D image model is generated from 3D geometry and texture data, and is used to advertise the model in the internet environment. Consumers can see the object realistically from wanted views by rotating or zooming in the internet browsers with Scanbull spx plug-in. The spx format allows a compact saving of 3D objects to handle or download. There are many types of scan equipments such as laser scanners and photogrammetric scanners. Line or point scan methods by laser can generate precise 3D geometry but cannot obtain color textures in general. Reversely, 3D image modeling with photogrammetry can generate not only geometries but also textures from associated polygons. We got various 3D image models and introduced the process of getting 3D image model of an internet-connected watchdog robot.

  • The images signifying flight in modern costumes are not made of one characteristic but the combination of complex meanings. Among the distinctive features some of them are as follows. First, the flying styles found in the costumes showed the birds as agents which sent human spirit to the celestial body. By simplifying the images of the wings connecting the present age with the heavenly body, the transforming emotions towards rhythm, direction, and organic curves transcending the real objectively constitutes a new space for expression. Second, colors appeal directly to man's emotions and incites emotional responses. The flying was shown in lines and colors. By using horizontal , vertical, oblique, and spiral lines and contrasted and paralleled colors, man's desire to fly dwells in newly colored space by reflecting speculative emotion through uniting surface. Third, the flying except for the costumes can be found in the advertisement through model's pose and camera technique, the flying itself is described through model's pose, the materials of the costumes, details, and sustaining stuffs. This symbolizes man's wish towards the unknown world vividly and dynamically. As discussed above the spirit of flying was, when expressed distinctively , in accordance with the varying cultural traits and transitions. The shape made by the vitality of symbolizing flying birds and animals along with the flying in the natural aspects such as wind and cloud were reappeared, simplified and symbolized , in modern costumes as consituting a new modeling space.

  • Continuous research efforts have been made on acquiring location data on construction sites. As a result, GPS and RFID are increasingly employed on the site to track the location of equipment and materials. However, these systems are based on radio frequency technologies which require attaching tags on every target entity. Implementing the systems incurs time and costs for attaching/detaching/managing the tags or sensors. For this reason, efforts are currently being made to track construction entities using only cameras. Vision-based 3D tracking has been presented in a previous research work in which the location of construction manpower, vehicle, and materials were successfully tracked. However, the proposed system is still in its infancy and yet to be implemented on practical applications for two reasons. First, it does not involve entity matching across two views, and thus cannot be used for tracking multiple entities, simultaneously. Second, the use of a checker board in the camera calibration process entails a focus-related problem when the baseline is long and the target entities are located far from the cameras. This paper proposes a vision-based method to track multiple workers simultaneously. An entity matching procedure is added to acquire the matching pairs of the same entities across two views which is necessary for tracking multiple entities. Also, the proposed method simplified the calibration process by avoiding the use of a checkerboard, making it more adequate to the realistic deployment on construction sites.

  • Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed to study the temperature distribution phenomenon of TIG assisted friction stir welding (TAFSW) between dissimilar plates (Al 6061-T6 and stainless steel 304). TAFSW is a solid-state welding process that integrates TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) into a friction stir welding (FSW), to preheat the harder material ahead of FSW tool during welding. In order to facilitate the industrial application of welding, 3D numerical modeling of heat transfer has been carried out applying Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature distribution due to heat generation during TAFSW on dissimilar materials joint is analysed using in-house solver. Moving heat source along with frictional heat between the work specimens and tool surface is considered to calculate the heat input. The analytical model used predicts successfully the maximum welding temperatures that occur on the dissimilar materials during TAFSW. Comparison with the infra red camera and thermocouple measurement results shows that the results from the current numerical simulation have good agreement with the measured data.
