This study was conducted to analysis the ecological characteristics of "Wando HolIy"$(llex{\times}wandoensis)$ which is expecting as a possible ornamental tree with its beautiful leaves, flowers and fruits, and to find special breeding material which have particular characteristics and also provide correct environmental information which are required for commercial cultivation. The hill of Galmoon-Ri, Gunoei-Myon, Jeonnam Province, Korea, were reported as a original habitat of native $llex{\times}wandoensis$. The investigation shows that soil pH of native habitat was 6.18, hardness was 2.39, humidity was 38.6%, direction of slope is SSW, and average inclination was $15^{\circ}. The vegetation around $I.{\times}wandoensis$ is occupied by trees like an Quercus variabilis, Q. serrata, Q. acuta and so on. These are mixed forest of deciduous trees. Tree height reached up to about 12m and its coverage is about 30%. Q. salicina, Camellia japonica, I. integra, Cryptomeria japonica account for sub-tree layer. Tree height is around 8m and coverage is about 20%. Shrub layer was taken by Viburnum furcatum, Callicarpa japonica, Styrax japonica, Eurya japonica, Lindera obtusiloba, Ligustrum japonicum, Smilax china, Cornus walteri etc. Tree height reaches around l.2m and coverage is around 20%. Herb layer includes Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium, Cymbidium goeringii, Dryopteris bissetiana, Disporum viridescens, Disporum smilacinum, Sasa borealis var. gracilis etc. Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium, which are observed in southern evergreen zone, are dominant and its coverage is around 20%. The native habitat was in spoiled condition because of artificial thin out.
The Camella japonica flower(CJF) extract was studied for their anti-angiogenenic and anti-cell adhesion effect. CJF-extract inhibited the tube formation on human umbilical vein endotherial cells(HUVEC) with butanol extract by 70.2%, acetone extract by 54.2%, ethyl acetate extract by 37.0%, chloroform extract by 21.2%. Cell adhesion molecules were effectively suppressed at different concentration of CJF at 50, 100, 200 ug/well such as for intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM) by 5.9%, 29.4% and 52.9%, for vascular cell adhesion molecule(VCAM) by 12.5%, 43.8% and 62.5%, for E-selectin by 7.1%, 21.4% and 35.7%, respectively. Signal molecules of vascular endotherial growth factor receptor 2(VEGFR2), ${/beta}$-catenin and PI3K are inhibited by different concentration of CJF at 10, 20 and 30 ${\mu}g/mL$ with western blot. Angiogenesis will be inhibited with suppressing NF-kB molecule resulted in signal molecules blocked by CJF. CJF will be useful materials for treatment of angiogenesis related diseases such as cancer, metastasis, rheumathioid arthritis and obesity.
We discovered following on our surveys to the island six times in May, August (1978), in April, May, June, July (1979). There are 73 families, 158 genera, 189 species, 31 varieties over Tracheophyta Fuller & Tippo. Till early or middle age of Lee Dynasty, the island's dominant plants was evergreen broad-leaved trees, mainly consisted with Camellia japonica L. and Castanopsis cuspidata Schot, var. sieboldii Nakai but due to the population growth and increased exiles constant ground burnt off fr cultivation, the number of evergreen broad-leaved trees was decreased and that of P. densiflora S. et Z. replaced position. That is to say, the island was dominated by the flora of the subtropical zone era, but it has been complicated by flora of the temperate zone whose reproductivity is more vivid, in modern era. Recently Pinus thunbergiana Franco, Robinia pseudo-acasasia L. Amoroha fructicasia L. invaded and reserved inthe island. During a decade of the end of Japanes rule and after liberation about all of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. were cut downed, and after that, under the Forest Bureau, there have being sucessed to Pinus thunbergiana France. Camellia japonica L. other 20 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees are distributed in Island Wi, a tutelary shrine of Dae Ri, a mountain at the back of a village of Chi Do Ri and a mountain at the back of Jin Ri administrative office of a township. The special plants of the island are 1) state of Lycoris aurea Herb which of foun in a ridge between fields and forest around Jin Ri and 2) stock of Cmbidium virescens Lindly bloomed under the Pinus densiflora forest of Keun Tan Chi Do.
A Korean endemic and evergreen small tree ' Dendropanax morbifera $L_{EV}$.(Araliaceae)' is a component of evergreen forest and mainly idstributein sourthern region and islands in Korea. A local population of D. morbifera which is located between evergreen and deciduous forest within 50m x 50m quadrate was investigated to ascertain the change of population structure, emergence and growth dynamics of seedlings and saplings, and pattern of spatial distribution by the temproal and spatial expansion of population . The result of analysis of population structure by Importnace Value(IV), evergreen forest showed a high species diversity of evergreen tree species such as Cinnamomum japonicum, Machilus japonica, Neolitsea serica, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Ligustrum japonicum, and etc, in middle and under story than in upper story where Camelia japonica and Quercus acuta were dominant. And in conterminous deciduous fores, the major component of evergreen forest in this region, Camellia japonica, Quercus acuta, evergreen tree of Lauraceae and etc. were abundant in only under story. IV of D. morbifera differed from among three story. In comparative analysis of emergence and growth dynamics of D. morbifera seedlings and saplings between evergreen and deciduous forest, emergece and density of seedlings were significantly greater in evergreen than in deciduous forest, and growth of height and basal diameter of seedlings and saplings were slightly larger in evergreen than in deciduous forest. The spatial distribution patterns by Moristia's index mapping of indivuduals using a lattice method of XY axis within this population showed that seedlings(age up to 2 years) and saplings (age>2 years and height<1m) both evergreen and deciduous forest were more or less aggregated apart from mature trees, and thougth intermediate trees(height>1m and dbh<10cm) had a aggregated distribution pattern, mature trees(dbh>10cm were uniform. In conclusion , the expansion of D. morbfera population from evergreen to deciduous forest accompanied with a mumber of evergreen woody species, and also, emergence and recruitment, and growth of seedlings were greatly influenced moisture and canopy by around community structure.
The forest stands of Seonusan area, South-western Korea, were classified into three alliances and nine communities by the Z-M school scheme. Of these one alliance and four association were recognized in this study, that is, an alliance, Carpinion laxiflorae and four associations, Casrpinetum tschonoskii, Quercetum variabilis, Carpinetum laxiflorae and Rhododendro mucronulati-Pinetum densiflorae. Hierachy of Seonunsan area forest vegetation by Z-M scheme was as fallows: Pinion densiflorae Suz.-Tok. 1966. 1. Rhododendro mucronlati-Pinetum densiflorae ass.l nov., 2. Pinus thunbergii community. The aim of this research was to investigate the chemical components of C30 compounds, especially triterpenoids in Korean native mistletoes of Korthalsella japonicus Engler parasiting to Camellia japonica L., Viscum album var. coloratum (Kom.) Ohmi, to Quercus acutissima Carruth. and Loran-thus yadoriko Sieb. to Neolitsea sericea (BI.) Koidz. For the identification of triterpenoidal components, alkaline hydrolyzates of mistletoes meals were analyzed by TLC, GC, and GC/MS. The content of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid derivatives were highest in K. japonica. In V. album, there was no big difference between leaves and twigs in content. but oleanolic acid in leaves. and olean-12-en-$3{\beta}$-ol and lup-20(29)-en-3-one in twigs were prominent. Similiar to V. album in L. yadoriki there was no difference between leaves and twigs in content, and both olean-12-en-$3{\beta}$-ol, lup-20(29)-en-3-one and urs-12-en-$3{\beta}$-ol in leaves, lup-20(29)-en-3-one in twigs were abundant. Triterpenoids as olea-12-en-$3{\beta}$-ol, lupe-20(29)-en-3-one, 3-oxo-urs-12-en-24-oic acid, and $21{\beta}$-A'-neogam-macer-22(29)-en-3-ol acetate were common in all samples tested. whereas ursolic acid only in P. japonicus and ursenol in L. yadoriki were detected. And P. japonicus had the largest number of triterpenoids and showed the highest in biological activity. So it is noted that Korean mistletoes tested in the study had three types of triterpenoid, oleanane, lupane, and ursane, irrespective of hosts, sampling positions and species.

Three kinds of bacteria that influence Kimchi fermentation, Lactobacillus plantarium for acidity, Leuconostoc mesenteroides for ripening Kimchi, and Pichia membranifaciens for decreasing Kimchi quality, were regulated by natural products including Theae folium, Taraxacum coreanum, Brassica juncea, Astragali radix, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Camellia japonica, Agaricus blazei, and Cordyceps militaris. The common prescription combined T. folium, T. coreanum and C. militaris and simultaneously regulated these 3 bacteria as follows: the growth of L. plantarium and P. membranifaciens were inhibited and L. mesenteroides was promoted. The most effective mixing ratio was T. folium: T. coreanum: C. militaris = 3:2:1. With this new prescription, deep flavor, extended preservation, and a special taste are expected in the Kimchi due to these natural products.

In this study, the distribution, bait preference, hosts, symbionts, habitat status, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the ant Linepithema humile were analyzed. This species habitat comprised approximately 1.5 km along stone crevices, flower gardens, roadsides, and container yards in the vicinity of Busan station, Korea. Feeding activity of this species was confirmed in 9 species of 7 families of plants. Which was approximately 14% of total flora (63 species of 37 families) in the studied area. Particularly, it was observed that Dendranthema indicum and Camellia japonica were the most frequently visited. Further, we verified that they interacted with four species of aphids. We identified 22 species of ants (17 genera, 4 subfamilies) inhabiting the Busan station area, including L. humile, Tetramorium tsushimae, Nylanderia flavipes and the alien species Paratrechina longicornis. In areas where L. humile was the dominant species, the habitat of local native ants was reduced by approximately 30%. Bait preference was ranked in the following order: jelly, water with glucose (25%), and yogurt, with the highest preference for baits containing sugar and protein. The 630-bp cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the local L. humile populations were 99% identical to those of L. humile in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database, and the Argentine ants that invaded Korea had a sequence identical to that of other invasive populations from China, Japan, and New Zealand. As L. humile rapidly increases due to domestic adaptation, continuous monitoring and control strategy for eradication are needed to protect domestic biodiversity.
Community structure of evergreen broad-leaved forest of Mt. Yeogwi in Jin-do was investigated to secure sustainable conservation of evergreen broad-leaved forest. Twenty survey plots of $20m{\times}20m$ were established along the elevation from 200 m to 390 m above the sea level in the northwestern slope. The woody species were tallied at each plots. DBH distribution of the major evergreen broad-leaved trees was investigated to find out the spatial distribution. Cluster analysis was applied to a set of vegetation data, that is, importance value to classify the forest community. Species diversity, evenness and species correlation were analysed. Canonical correspondence analysis was also applied to vegetation data and soil environmental data. Cluster analysis showed that the forests of Mt. Yeogwi were classified into 2 community groups, such as Camellia japonica community group and Quercus acuta community group. C japonica community group was subdivided into C japonica- evergreen broad-leaved trees community, C. japonica-Neolitsea sericea community, and C. japonica-deciduous broad-leaved trees community. Q. acuta community group was subdivided into Q. acuta-C. japonica community, and Q. acuta community. C. japonica, Q. acuta, N. sericea, Machilus thunbergii and Illicium religiosum were dominant evergreen broad-leaved tree species, while Styrax japonica, Lindera erythrocarpa, Cornus kousa, Prunus sargentii, Albizzia julibrisin and Quercus acutissima were major deciduous tree species. Species diversity was greater in Q. acuta community group (0.8231 for Q. acuta-C. japonica community, and 0.8135 for Q. acuta community) than in C. japonica community group (0.7674 for C. japonica-evergreen broad-leaved trees community, 0.6164 for C. japonica-N. sericea community, and 0.7931 for C. japonica-deciduous broad-leaved trees community). DBH 2 cm~10 cm of major evergreen broad-leaved trees occupied 80% of all. C. japonica of less than DBH 5 cm tended to aggregate but distribute randomly or regularly with increasing DBH. Q. acuta distributed more aggregately than C. japonica and Machilus thunbergii for more than 15 cm of DBH. C. japonica correlated negatively with Q. acuta, I. religiosum and C. kousa, but positively with N. sericea. with significance at 1% level. Q. acuta correlated negatively with C. japonica, N. sericea and M. thunbergii but positively with l. religiosum. There were also negative correlation between N. sericea and C. kousa. CCA showed that forest communities were correlated with soil variables such as CEC, soil organic matter and soil pH. With increased soil organic matter and CEC, and decreased soil pH, C. japonica was dominant and forest community and Q. acuta and N. sericea tended to develop in the evergreen broad-leaved forest.

In the previous study, we reported the antioxidative and cellular protective effects of Jeju native plant extracts. In this study, we investigated the anti-oxidative, anti-wrinkle and whitening effects of new 37 plant extracts collected from self-growing plants in Jeju island. Their anti-oxidant activities were measured by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging assay and reactive oxygen species(ROS) scavenging assay in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system. The cytoprotective properties of 37 plant extracts were assessed in the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes. The inhibitory effect of 37 plant extracts on tyrosinase were investigated to assess their whitening efficacy. Finally, their anti-elastase activities were measured to predict the anti-wrinkle efficacy in the human skin. The results showed that the extracts of Myrica rubra stem bark and Securinega suffruticosa have the free radical scavenging activity($FSC_{50}:\;5,\;8{\mu}g/mL$, respectively), and the extracts of Quercus acutissima leaf and Securinega suffruticosa stem bark have the prominent ROS scavenging activity($OSC_{50}:\;0.009{\mu}g/mL$). Photohemolysis of erythrocytes in the presence of rose-bengal as a sensitizer was inhibited by the extracts of Securinega suffruticosa stem bark and Salix koreensis stem(${\tau}_{50}$, 895 min, 640 min at 50 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Myrica rubra stem bark extract(77.8% at 200 ${\mu}g/mL$) and Salix koreensis stem extract(76.2% at 200 ${\mu}g/mL$) also have the inhibitory effect on tyrosinase and elastase activities, respectively. These results indicated that the stem park of Myrica rubra, Securinega suffruticosa, and Camellia japonica, the stem of Salix koreensis, and the leaf of Quercus aqutissima and Camellia japonica could have e benefitial effects when they are added as ingredients in cosmetics.
