  • We develop Mueller-matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry based on dual compensator configuration. This technique is very powerful for measuring surface anisotropy in nano-scale, especially when materials show depolarization. Dual-rotating compensator configuration is adopted with the rotational ratio of 5:3 originally developed by Collins et al[1]. The instrument can provide 250-point spectra over the wavelength range from 230 nm to 820 nm in one irradiance waveform with minimum acquisition time of Tc=10 s. In this work, the results obtained in transmission modes are presented for the initial attempt. We present calibration procedures to diagnose the system from the utilized data collected in transmission mode without sample. We expect that the instrument will have important applications in thin films and surfaces that have anisotropy and inhomogeneity.

  • Behavior characteristics of coil shaped elastoplastic dampers, a sort of hysteretic damper, are studied on through experiments and numerical analyses. The coil shaped elastoplastic damper shows bilinear force-deformation relationship, and no stress concentration is occurred in the device. Numerical model, which is constructed through calibration with experimental results, shows good agreement with experiment, The coil shaped elastoplastic damper has lower yielding strength and stiffness under transversal loading compared to axial leading. Additional studies are required on behavior characteristics according to configuration variation of coil shaped elastoplastic dampers.

  • The geo-referencing accuracy of the images acquired by a UAV based multi-sensor system is affected by the accuracy of the mounting parameters involving the relationship between a camera and a GPS/INS system as well as the performance of a GPS/INS system. Therefore, the estimation of the accurate mounting parameters of a multi-sensor system is important. Currently, we are developing a low altitude multi-sensor system based on a UAV, which can monitor target areas in real time for rapid responses for emergency situations such as natural disasters and accidents. In this study, we suggest a system calibration method for the estimation of the mounting parameters of a multi-sensor system like our system. We also generate simulation data with the sensor specifications of our system, and derive an effective flight configuration and the number of ground control points for accurate and efficient system calibration by applying the proposed method to the simulated data. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can estimate accurate mounting parameters using over five ground control points and flight configuration composed of six strips. In the near future, we plan to estimate mounting parameters of our system using the proposed method and evaluate the geo-referencing accuracy of the acquired sensory data.

  • Purpose: In near infrared spectroscopy, interactance configuration of a light source and a spectrometer probe can provide more information regarding fruit internal attributes, compared to reflectance and transmittance configuration. However, there is no through study on the parameters of interactance measurement setup. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the parameters on the estimation of soluble solids content (SSC) and firmness of muskmelons. Methods: Melon samples were taken from greenhouses at three different harvesting seasons. The prediction models were developed at three distances of 2, 5, and 8 cm between the light source and the spectrometer probe, three measurement points of 2, 3, and 6 evenly distributed on each sample, and different number of fruit samples for calibration models. The performance of the models was compared. Results: In the test at the three distances, the best results were found at a 5 cm distance. The coefficient of determination ($R_{cv}{^2}$) values of the cross-validation were 0.717 (standard error of prediction, SEP=$1.16^{\circ}Brix$) and 0.504 (SEP=4.31 N) for the estimation of SSC and firmness, respectively. The minimum measurement point required to fully represent the spectral characteristics of each fruit sample was 3. The highest $R_{cv}{^2}$ values were 0.736 (SEP=$0.87^{\circ}Brix$) and 0.644 (SEP=4.16 N) for the estimation of SSC and firmness, respectively. The performance of the models began to be saturated when 60 fruit samples were used for developing calibration models. The highest $R_{cv}{^2}$ of 0.713 (SEP=$0.88^{\circ}Brix$) and 0.750 (SEP=3.30 N) for the estimation of SSC and firmness, respectively, were achieved. Conclusions: The performance of the prediction models was quite different according to the condition of interactance measurement setup. In designing a fruit grading machine with interactance configuration, the parameters for interactance measurement setup should be chosen carefully.

  • This paper proposes a multimodal sensor platform which supports plug and play (PnP) technology. PnP technology automatically recognizes a connected sensor module and an application program easily controls a sensor. To verify a multimodal platform for PnP technology, we build up a firmware and have the experiment on a sensor system. When a sensor module is connected to the platform, a firmware recognizes the sensor module and reads sensor data. As a result, it provides PnP technology to simply plug sensors without any software configuration. Measured sensor raw data suffer from various distortions such as gain, offset, and non-linearity errors. Therefore, we introduce a polynomial calculation to compensate for sensor distortions. To find the optimal coefficients for sensor calibration, we apply a genetic algorithm which reduces the calibration time. It achieves reasonable performance using only a few data points with reducing 97% error in the worst case. The platform supports various protocols for multimodal sensors, i.e., UART, I2C, I2S, SPI, and GPIO.

  • The three-dimensional measurement method of confocal systems is a spot scanning method which has a high resolution and good illumination efficiency. However, conventional confocal systems had a weak point in that it has to perform XY axis scanning to achieve FOV (Field of View) vision through spot scanning. There are some methods to improve this problem involving the use of a galvano mirror [1], pin-hole array, etc. Therefore, in this paper we propose a method to improve a parallel mode confocal system using a micro-lens and pin-hole array in a dual microscope configuration. We made an area scan possible by using a combination MLA (Micro Lens Array) and pin-hole array, and used an objective lens to improve the light transmittance and signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, we made it possible to change the objective lens so that it is possible to select a lens considering the reflection characteristic of the measuring object and proper magnification. We did an experiment using 5X, 2.3X objective lens, and did a calibration of height using a VLSI calibration target.

  • One of major problems in analyzing failure mechanism of real components is the accurate measurement of crack size and shape. The DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop) method has been widely used for the crack measurement of a structure and finite element analysis has been used for the derivation of calibration equations, which relates the potential drop with the crack depth. In this paper, finite element analyses were performed for semi-elliptical surface cracks with various crack shapes(a/c) and crack depths(a/t). As a result, a calibration equation has been derived for the measurement of a semi-elliptical surface crack in wide plates. Analytical results are compared with experimental results to evaluate the validity and the applicability of the derived equation. The proposed method is expected to provide efficient and accurate measurement of a surface crack during crack growth.

  • In this paper, we propose a precise linear motion stage supported by magnetically preloaded air bearings. The eight aerostatic bearings with rectangular carbon porous pads were located only one side of vertical direction under the platen where four bearings are in both sides of horizontal direction as wrap-around-design, and this gives simpler configuration than which constrained by air bearings for all direction. Each of the magnetic actuators has a permanent magnet generating static magnetic flux far required preload and a coil to perturb the magnetic farce resulting adjustment of air- bearing clearance. The characteristics of porous aerostatic bearing are analyzed by numerical analysis, and analytic magnetic circuit model is driven for magnetic actuator to calculate preload and variation of force due to current. A 1-axis linear stage motorized with a coreless linear motor and a linear encoder was designed and built to verify this design concept. The load capacity, stiffness and preload force were examined and compared with analysis. With the active magnetic preloading actuators controlled with DSP board and PWM power amplifiers, the active on-line adjusting tests about the vertical, pitching and rolling motion were performed. It was shown that motion control far three DOF motions were linear and independent after calibration of the control gains.
