  • The introduction of lithium salts for the treatment of mood disorder by Code in 1949 was a major therapeutic breakthrough. Yet it is far from the universal therpeutic agent in the treatment of mood disorders. Indeed, some acutely manic patients do not respond adeqately to lithium and some individuals experience breakthrough affective episodes during lithium maintenance. In the last decode, it has become c1ear that a significant number of patients with more highly recurrent disorders may require alternative or enhanced forms of prophylactic treatment. For these reasons, a variety of other drugs hove been employed for the treatment and prophylaxis of mood disorders. Efforts to develop new pharmacologic strategies for mood disorder hove included a diverse array of medications, ranging from potent benzodiazepines to novel neuroleptics and from anticonvulsants to calcium channel blockers. The anticonvulsants appear particularly useful in cases of dysphoric mania and rapid cycling state, subforms of bipolar disorder that respond quite poorly to conventional treatments. Among all of these new pharmacologic strategy, carbamazepine and sodium valproate have received the broadest clinical applications as maintenance therapies. The data documenting the short-term antimanic effectiveness of the calcium channel blocker verapamil and benzodiazepins such as clonazepam and lorazepam appear also promising. A number of other theoretically interesting, as well as clinically relevant therapies, which are not presently employed routinly, hove also been studied, including 2 blocker clonidine, atypical antipsychotic clozapine, cholinomimetics, 5-HT enhancers, thyroid and magnesium preparations. Now prophylaxis in mood disorder remains a considerable therapeutic challenge. Controlled testing of the prophylactic efficacy of compounds such as carbamazepine, valproic acid, and the calcium channel blockers represent important next step in the clinical trials for mood disorder.

  • The concentrate of lepidolite, being treated by heavy medium separation (HMS), was ground with calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CSH, $CaSO_4{\cdot}1/2H_2O$) to investigate the mechanochemical effect for the Li leachability in water. This leachability increased, dramatically through the intensive grinding for the mixture, concentrate and CSH. The leachability of Li was improved from 4.48% to 93.5%. The grinding of the mixture destructed the crystal structure of the concentrate, and it might be formed to new compounds. As the result, Li in the concentrate can be extracted by water leaching at room temperature.

  • This paper was carried out to isolate and identify Aeromonas caviae which can degrade Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate(SDBS) effectively. And the affecting factors for the ability of bacterial degradation were also studied. Frm October 1991 to February 1992, two hundred samples from sweage in Taegu area and Nakdong river waters in Talsung Gun area were tested. Minimal salt medium which contain SDBS only as a carbon source was used as a culture medium. The isolated new strain was identified as Aeromonas caviae Kim & Kweon. The optimal pH for SDBS degradation were 7.0 and temperature, $32^{\circ}C.$ It was taken 24 hours to degrade SDBS of 20mg/l completely under the optimal pH and temperature. And in the case of 30 mg/l of SDBS, it was taken 36 hours. The nitrogen sources were added to the minimal salt media containing 20mg/l of SDBS, and they were incubated at $32^{\circ}C$ for 14 hours. 86.9% SDBS were degraded after addition of 0.03% peptone as a organic nitrogen source. And 70.5% SDBS after addition of 0.05% ammonium sulfate as a inorganic nitrogen source. In the case of metal compounds(0.015%), the degradation rate for SDBS were 3.5 fold increased in the media containing magnesium chloride and calcium chloride than in the media that were not containing these metal compounds. And where the media containing magnesium chloride was 0.05%, the degradation rate was 65.8%. And above 0.3% NaCI, the degradation rate was decreased slowly.

  • Artemisia apiacea is a traditional herbal medicine using treatment of eczema and jaundice in Eastern Asia including China, Korea, and Japan. In this study, the three phytosterol constituents were isolated and identified from the hexane fraction of 80% aqueous methanol extract of A. apiacea. Compounds were isolated using open column chromatography (silica gel). Their chemical structures were also established using $^1H$-NMR and $^{13}C$-NMR. Moreover, neuroprotective activity of each compound against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in hippocampal HT-22 cell line was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Furthermore, Inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and calcium ion ($Ca^{2+}$) accumulation were measured for elucidation of neuroprotective mechanism of isolated compounds. They showed that stigmasterol had neuroprotective activity against the glutamate-induced toxicity by inhibition of ROS and $Ca^{2+}$ production. In conclusion, isolated compound of A. apiacea might be useful for therapeutic agent against neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Cluster systems are microcrystals of vanadiumoxided compounds such as Barium, Calcium or Sodium Metavanadates or Sodium Vanadium Bronze which are distributed into dimethyl- or diethylphosphites or microcrystals of vanadium oxides, for instance, vanadium oxide (+3), distributed into the methylphosphonic acid melted. During the interaction of vanadium compounds with the correspondent phosphororganic substances biue viscous liquids are formed. These liquids have paramagnetic properties. According to the UV and IR spectroscopic investigations as well as the results of EPR spectra the substances obtained consist of the nucleus containing 6 to 12 of vanadium atoms and the shell including ligands which are molecules of phosphites or methylphosphonic acid. Here every atom of vanadium interacts with four of phosphorus containing molecules. Sizes of the particles in these systems donot exceed 200 nm. Introduction of cluster systems (0,1 -0,3 % vanadium) into epoxy compositions before the introduction of curing agent - polyethylenepolyamine 6 -8 % leads to the acceleration of composition crosslinking and to the combustion decreasing: 1) Oxygen Index grows to 35: 2)mass losses during combustion decrease to 1-2%, 3) combustion time does not exceed 1 s; 4) the intumescence of material sample is being observed during the burner action as well as the foam coke formation.

  • Uranium ingot is produced by metallothermic reduction of uranium tetrafluoride using magnesium or calcium as reductant. Presence of oxygen containing compounds viz. uranyl fluoride and uranium oxide in the starting uranium fluoride has a significant effect on the firing time, final temperature of the charge, slag-metal separation and hence the metal recovery. As reported in the literature, the maximum tolerable limit for uranyl fluoride in the UF4 is 2.5 wt% and limit for uranium oxide content is in the range 2-3 wt%. No theoretical or experimental basis is available till date for these limits. Analyses have been carried out in this study to understand the effect of UO2F2 concentration in the starting fluoride on the final temperature of the products and thus the reduction characteristics. UF4 having uranyl fluoride concentration, less than as well as more than 2.5 wt%, have been investigated. Thermodynamic calculations have been carried out to arrive at a general expression for the final temperature attained by the products during calciothermic reduction of UF4. Finally, an upper limit for the oxygen containing impurities has been estimated using the CaO-CaF2 phase diagram.

  • The objective of the study was to prepare self-microeulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) incorporating atorvastatin calcium and evaluate its properties and oral bioavailability. Solubility of atorvastatin in various vehicles was determined. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were constructed to identify the good self-emulsification region. The droplet size distributions of the resultant emulsions were determined by dynamic light scattering measurement. The mean droplet size of chosen formulation (20% ethyl oleate, 40% tween-80, 40% Carbitol$^{(R)}$) was $23.4{\pm}1.3$ nm. The SMEDDS incorporating atorvastatin calcium appeared to be associated with better performance in dissolution and pharmacokinetic studies, compared with raw atorvastatin calcium. In dissolution test, the release percentage of atorvastatin from SMEDDS mixture could rapidly reach more than 95% within 3 min. Oral $AUC_{0{\rightarrow}8hr}$ values in SD rats was $1994{\pm}335\;ng{\cdot}hr/mL$, which significantly increased (P<0.05) compared with raw atorvastatin calcium. The SMEDDS formulation was relatively stable when stored at $4^{\circ}C$ during 3 months. Our studies illustrated the potential use of SMEDDS for the delivery of hydrophobic compounds, such as atorvastatin, by the oral route.

  • The effects of blast furnace slag(BFS) and desulfurized gypsum(FDG) on the compressive strength of CFBA, and self-hydration of CFBA were studied. CFBA has self-hydrating and hardening properties, and it can be seen that the compressive strength of CFBA can be improved by using appropriate amounts of BFS and FDG. In addition, the self-hardening properties of CFBA are similar to the hydration reaction of 4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3 (C4AF), a cement clinker mineral, and when free-CaO, CaSO4 and CaCO3 coexist, Compressive strength of CFBA is expressed by the formation of calcium carbo compounds and hydrates of ettringite, calcium silicate, and calcium aluminate.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the bioavailabilities and the digestibilities of oligopeptide chelated (peptide-Ca), anchovy bone (anchovy-Ca) and methionine hydroxyl analogue (MHA-Ca) calcium compared to those of calcium carbonate in rats. In exp1, $CaCO_3$, were added to the basal diet at level of 0, 30 and 60% calcium of the AIN-93G diet. In test groups, peptide-Ca, anchovy-Ca and MHA-Ca, were added to the basal diet to provide calcium at the level of 40% of AIN-93G. In exp1, the bioavailabilities were evaluated from the regression equation of the ratios of theological/ actual calcium intakes of each dietary treatment. In exp2, urine and feces was to evaluate the true- and apparent digestibility and apparent retention. In exp1, Ca-60% group had higher bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC) and bone breaking strength (BBS) than those of the other standard groups. The bone weight and ash content of the peptide-Ca and anchovy-Ca groups were significantly higher than those of the MHA-Ca. Bone calcium content were not significantly different from the test group. The bioavailability of the MHA-Ca group was shown higher BMD (71%), BS (38%) and BBS (27%) compared to another control group. But the regression coefficient for BMD, BS and BBS were lower compare with that of bone ash and BMC. In exp2, the true- and apparent digestibility of test groups were shown to over 90%. Peptide-Ca was not significantly different from other test group, but digestibility and retention were higher compare to other test groups. In conclusion, peptide-Ca, anchovy-Ca and MHA-Ca improved Ca bioavailability in the rats. The compounds were higher Ca digestibility compared with those of $CaCO_3$. It is assumed that difference of digestibility for test groups may be correlated to the bioavailability of test groups in BMD, BMC, BS, BBS and bone ash respectively.

  • To investigate the reinforcing effects of functional fillers in nitrile rubber (NBR) materials, high-structure carbon black (HS45), coated calcium carbonate (C-CaCO3), silica (200MP), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as functional filler, and carbon black (SRF) as a common filler were used for oil-resistant rubber. The curing and mechanical properties of HS45-, 200MP-, and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds were improved compared to those of the SRF-filled NBR compound. The reinforcing effect also increased with a decrease in the particle size of the fillers. The C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound exhibited no reinforcing effect with increasing filler concentration because of their large primary particle size (2 ㎛). The reinforcing behavior based on 100% modulus of the functional filler based NBR compounds was compared by using several predictive equation models. The reinforcing behavior of the C-CaCO3-filled NBR compound was in accordance with the Smallwood-Einstein equation whereas the 200MP- and MWCNT-filled NBR compounds fitted well with the modified Guth-Gold (m-Guth-Gold) equation. The SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds exhibited reinforcing behavior in accordance with the Guth-Gold and m-Guth-Gold equations, respectively, at a low filler content. However, the values of reinforcement parameter (100Mf/100Mu) of the SRF- and HS45-filled NBR compounds were higher than those determined by the predictive equation model at a high filler content. Because the chains of SRF composed of spherical filler particles are similarly changed to rod-like filler particles embedded in a rubber matrix and the reinforcement parameter rapidly increased with a high content of HS45, the higher-structured filler. The reinforcing effectiveness of the functional fillers was numerically evaluated on the basis of the effectiveness index (SRF/f) determined by the ratio of the volume fraction of the functional filler (f) to that of the SRF filler (SRF) at three unit of reinforcing parameter (100Mf/100Mu). On the basis of their effectiveness index, MWCNT-, 200MP-, and HS45-filled compounds showed higher reinforcing effectiveness of 420%, 70%, and 20% than that of SRF-filled compound, respectively whereas C-CaCO3-filled compound exhibited lower reinforcing effectiveness of -50% than that of SRF-filled compound.
