Eighteen wether lambs averaging 32 kg were used to determine the effects of dietary silica, added as silicic acid, on mineral metabolism. Lambs were fed 1200 g daily of a coastal Bermuda grass based diet supplemented with either 0, .5 or 1.5% silicic acid. A 7-d total collection of urine and feces was conducted after lambs had adjusted to the dietary treatments for 19 days. Urinary excretion of silica was higher (p<.01) in lambs fed added silicic acid. Ruminal soluble concentrations of manganese tended to be lower (p<.10) and apparent absorption and retention of manganese were lower (p<.05) in lambs supplemented with silicic acid compared to control lambs. Apparent absorption and retention of calcium were slightly lower (p<.10) in silicic acid fed lambs. No differences in urinary between lambs fed .5 and those given 1.5% silicic acid. Phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper absorption and retention were not affected by treatment.
This study investigated the effects of water-soluble calcium supplements manufactured with eggshells and oyster shells on growing rats. The aim was to review the potential use of food wastes as materials for water-soluble calcium supplements as compared to water-soluble calcium supplements made from imported seaweed powder. When experimental animals were administered three types of water-soluble calcium supplements orally for six weeks, the serum calcium level of the seaweed calcium supplement group were significantly higher than that of eggshell or oyster shell-derived calcium, but blood alkali phosphatase activity, osteocalcin and urine crosslink levels were not different in the three types of calcium supplements. Bone mineral density and bone mineral content in spine, femur and tibia also were not significantly different among the groups. However, when considering body weight of each group, bone mineral density and bone mineral content of the femur were significantly higher in the oyster shell calcium supplement group. These results suggest that at least on a short-term basis, the effect of calcium supplements prepared from eggshell and oyster shell are similar to the effects of seaweed calcium supplements.
Purpose: The objective of this study is to review researches regarding factors that potentially affect adolescent calcium (Ca) metabolism, and to suggest a potential modeling approach for optimizing gastrointestinal Ca absorption and peak bone mass. Background: Optimal gastrointestinal Ca absorption is a key to maximizing peak bone mass in adolescents. Urine Ca excretion in adolescents rises only after bone accretion is saturated, indicating that higher intestinal Ca absorption and bone retention is necessary to ensure maximum bone accretion. Hence, maximizing peak bone mass is possible by controlling the factors influencing gastrointestinal Ca absorption and bone accretion. However, a mechanism that explains the unique adolescent Ca metabolism has not yet been elucidated. Review: Dietary factors that enhance gastrointestinal Ca absorption may increase the available Ca pool usable for bone accretion, and a specific hormone may direct optimal Ca utilization to maximize peak bone mass. IGF-1 is an endocrine hormone whose levels peak during adolescence and increase fractional Ca absorption and bone Ca accretion. Prebiotics, generally obtained from dietary sources, have been reported to exert a beneficial effect on Ca absorption via microbiota activity. We selected and reviewed three candidates that could be used to propose a comprehensive Ca metabolic model for optimal Ca absorption and peak bone mass in adolescents. Modeling: Modeling has been used to investigate Ca metabolism and its regulators. Herein, we reviewed previous Ca modeling studies. Based on this review, we proposed a method for developing a comprehensive model that includes regulatory effectors of IGF-1 and prebiotics.
Objectives : To investigate the effect of Taxilli Ramulus (TR) extract on bone metabolism of ethanol-treated animal model. Methods : The changes of serum calcium, calcitonin, estrogen level, a1ka1ine phosphatase activity, osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone content and urine calcium level were observed with ethanol treatment for 60 days. The results were compared with an ethanol- TR extract double treatment group. Results : We observed increment of serum osteocalcin, parathyroid hormone content, alkaline phosphatase activity and urine calcium level by chronic ethanol feed and they were recovered to near normal level with Taxilli Ramulus extract treatment. Weight gain, serum calcium level, calcitonin and estrogen content were remarkably reduced with ethanol treatment and their levels were normalized by Taxilli Ramulus extract. Conclusions : These results showed that Taxilli Ramulus extract have the ability to recover to normal in the body an abnormal calcium metabolism process due to external factors. These results suggested that Taxilli Ramulus extract have preventive effects on calcium concentration loss and osteoporosis.
This study was carried out to examine how dietary protein and calcium levels in rats fed fat-enriched diet affect the total lipid and cholesterol contents of blood and tissues. Male Sprauge-Dawley rats weighing approximately 200g were fed six purified diets which contained 18%(w/w) beef tallow, 1% (w/w) cholesterol, two source of protein, casein or isolated soy protein (ISP) and three levels of dietary calcium, 0.1%, 0.4% and 1.0%, first, for four weeks, and second, for eight weeks. The contents of the total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride in blood, liver, heart and feces were determined. After four weeks feeding serum lipid and cholesterol concentrations significantly decreased in rats fed 1.0% (w/w) level calcium, regardless of dietrary protein sources. After eight weeks, these concentrations were significantly lower in the rats fed soy protein than in casein-fed rats. As dietary calcium level increased serum and tissue lipid and cholesterol contents were decreased and fecal lipid excretion increased. It is concluded that hypolipidemic and/or hypocholesterolemic effects of soy protein and calcium were partly due to decrease in lipid absorption.

To utilize the oyster shell containing a lot of calcium, we investigated the bioavailability of calcium compounds from oyster shell. First, calcium oxide was prepared by burning of oyster shell at $1200^{\circ}C$. Its purity was approximately $98.5\%$. Calcium compounds, $CaCl_2$, and $CaHPO_4$, from the calcium oxide were prepared by chemical reaction. Effect on calcium absorption by the calcium compounds from oyster shell was improved using fish skin gelatin peptides.(FSGP), which was prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of fish skin gelatin for 4hr with tuna pyloric caeca crude enzyme (TPCCE). in vitro experiment, calcium absorption by addition of FSGP in a mixture solution of calcium and phosphate was higher approximately $70\%$ than that by control. in vivo using calcium deficient rats, a group taken the diets with $3\%$ FSGP and $CaHPO_4$ was significantly improved amount of calcium and ash in femur and strength of femur. These results suggest that calcium compounds from oyster shell and FSGP could be used as an effective dietary calcium source.
This study was to investigate interaction between dietary protein and Ca levels in Ca metabolism and renal function in osteporosis rats. Five week-old female rats were fed a low Ca diet for 4 weeks after ovariectomy operation to establish rat models of osteoporosis. The ovariectomized osteoporosis rats were divided into six groups and were fed experimental diets which contained two levels of protein, normal (20%) and high(40%) , and three levels of Ca, low (0.06%), normal (0.47%) and high(0.94%) for 4 weeks , respectively. The ovaricetmized rat model of osteoporosis showed a remarkable decrease in serum Ca concentration, fresh weight and breaking force of femur, Ca and P contents of femur, and apparent absorption and retention of Ca. The supplementations of Ca and P contents of femur, and apparent absorption and retention of Ca. The supplementations of Ca at the dietary levels of normal and high levels significantly enhanced Ca bioavailability shown in the above experimental rat models of osteoporosis, regardless of dietary protein levels ; whereas the rats which were fed the low Ca diet demonstrated rather a decrease in its bioavailability. Irrespectively of the dietary Ca levels, the rats which were fed high protein diet exhibited an increase in kidney weight, urinary Ca, volume and hydroxyproline, and glomerular filtration ratio(GFR). The results show that dietary protein and calcium levels affect the renal function and Ca metabolism independently, while the interaction between protein and calcium have not been shown.
This study examined the effect of excess calcium (Ca) on the iron (Fe) bioavailability and bone growth of marginally Fe deficient animals. Two groups of weanling female SD rats were fed either normal Fe (35 ppm) or Fe deficient diet (8 ppm) for 3 weeks. Then each group of animals were assigned randomly to one of three groups and were fed one of six experimental diets additionally for 4 weeks, containing normal (35 ppm) or low (15 ppm) Fe and one of three levels of Ca as normal (0.5%), high (1.0%), or excess (1.5%). Feces and urine were collected during the last 3 days of treatment. After sacrifice blood, organs, and femur bone were collected for analysis. Final body weight and average food intake were not affected by either the levels of dietary Ca or Fe. Low Fe diet significantly reduced the level of serum ferritin, however, for Hb, Hct, and TIBC no difference was shown than those in the normal Fe group. TIBC increased slightly by high and excess Ca intake in low Fe groups. For both normal and low Fe groups, high and excess Ca intakes reduced the apparent absorption of Fe and Fe contents of liver significantly (p < 0.05). Calcium contents in kidney and Femur of rats that were fed high and excess levels of Ca were significantly greater than those of normal Ca groups. However, weight, length, and breaking force of the bone were not affected by increased Ca intakes. Both in control and low Fe groups, high and excess intakes of Ca decreased the apparent absorption of Ca. These results indicate that the excess intakes of calcium than the normal needs would be undesirable for Fe bioavailability and that the adverse effects be more serious in marginally iron deficient growing animals. In addition bone growth and strength would not be favorably affected by high Ca intakes, though, the long term effect of increased Ca contents in bone requires further examination.

This study has investigated the bioavailability of calcium in eggshell powder (ESP) fortified ramen. Wean-ling SD rats were maintained for 2 weeks on 0.05$\%$ low calcium diet then assigned randomly to one of 5 groups. Animals were provided for 4 weeks one of 3 different experimental diets containing 0.15$\%$ calcium as $CaCo_{3}$, NFDM, or ESP fortified ramen. Two control groups were fed either 0.05$\%$ calcium or general ramen containing 0.08$\%$ calcium. The body weight, diet intake, food efficiency ratio (FER), bone growth, calcium contents of bones, and apparent absorption were measured. Experimental results show that regardless of calcium sources 0.15$\%$ calcium groups increased body weight, weight and length, calcium content, and the strength of two bones (tibia and femur) significantly compared to 0.05$\%$ calcium group. The apparent absorption rate of calcium also showed similar results supporting the bioavailability of ESP fortified ramen is not inferior to either NFDM or $CaCO_{3}cdot$ The results indicate that ESP fortified ramen is a proper mediate for calcium fortification in Korea.

From the construction material the cement and the concrete which will reach to 90% are used to construction. But the cement occurrence (from the whole industry 4.4% of carbon dioxide exhaust quantity) makes the carbon dioxide of manufacture hour and anti- the recognition which is an environment industry. The cement absorbs the carbon dioxide during life period of the life time. It calls carbonation. In this study in order to evaluate the carbon dioxide absorption of the cement test produced the mortar specimens which it follows in the W/C. And carbonatable material of mortar specimens (calcium hydroxide) the quantitly it measured, reference study it led and absorption of carbon dioxide quantity it produced. Finally two result comparisons leads and it is a fundamental study which does the test evaluation possibility and a propriety investigation of carbon dioxide absorption quantity in objective.
