  • To develope chemical heat pump using available energy sources, solar heat and other kinds of waste thermal energy, we have studied the heat transfer rate in cylindrical bed reactor packed with calcined Dolomite. Two dimensional (radial and circumferential) Partial differential equations, concerning heat and mass transfer in packed bed of calcined Dolomite, are solved numerically to describe the characteristics of the reaction of calcined Dolomite and heat transfer. The results obtained by numerical analysis about two dimensional profiles of temperature and conversion of reactant in the packed bed reactor and the amount of exothermic heat released from the reactor are follows. It was found that all of calcined Dolomite packed bed kept the reaction temperature of about 750K throughout the entire part of the bed, immediately after the steam was introduced exothermic reaction of hydration was proceeded from the packed bed inpu to output and from wall side to center. The rate of thermochemical reaction depends on the temperature and concentration and it is also governed by the boundary conditions and heat transfer rate in the particle packed bed.

  • To develope chemical heat pump using available energy sources, solar heat and other kinds of waste thermal energy, we have studied the material and heat transfer rate in the cylindrical bed reactor packed with Calcined Dolomite. Our results from the studies are as follows ; 1 The time needed to complete dehydration reaction at the wall side of the cylindrical reactor(r/rL=0.5) was shorter than that of the center(r/rL=0.0) as much as 12%. 2. Two dimensional (radial and circumferential) partial differential equations, concerning heat and mass transfer rate in the packed bed of calcined Dolomite, are solved numerically to describe the characteristics of the reaction in the cylindrical reactor. The solution reads rate of reaction in the packed bed reactor depends on the temperature and concentration of reactants. These results read the supplied heat transfers from the wall side of the cylinder to the center, dehydration reaction begins at the inner side of the wall of the cylindrical reactor and the dehydration reaction proceeds from the wall side to center of cylinder.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the heat storage/release characteristics of the thermochemical reaction of the calcined dolomite with the packed bed shape experimental apparatus for development of chemical heat pump system. In the present study, it was found that MgO of the calcined dolomite was not hydrated during the hydration process under the experimental conditions. Therefore, the MgO of the calcined dolomite can be regard as an inert material. As a result, it was found that all of CaO packed kept the reaction temperature of about $510^{\circ}C$ through the entire part of the bed. The dehydration reaction was incurred first at the wall side area as the supplied heat was transferred through the wall side into the packed bed. As a result of the temperature and concentration spread, the reaction was completed at the wall side progressed into the center.

  • Mg crowns were manufactured using domestic dolomite (Ca·Mg(CO3)2) (20~30 mm). In order to manufacture the calcined dolomite (CaO·MgO), (a) electric furnace (950 ℃, 480 min) and (b) microwave furnace (950 ℃, 60 min) processes were used. As a result of XRD analysis, it was analyzed as (a) CaO 56.9 wt%, MgO 43.1 wt% by electric furnace process and (b) CaO 55 wt%, MgO 45 wt% by microwave furnace process. Even when the decarbonation reaction time of dolomite was shortened by 1/8 in microwave furnace process compare with electric furnace process, the calcined dolomite could be produced. The hydration reaction (ASTM C 110) is a standard for the hydration reactivity of calcined dolomite, and the calcined dolomite produced by electric furnace process showed a high hydration reactivity (max temp 79.8 ℃/1.5 minutes). Such hydration reactivity was occurred by only CaO hydration reaction and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The calcined dolomite produced by microwave furnace process showed low hydration reactivity (max temp 81.7 ℃/19.5 minutes). Such low hydration reactivity was occurred by CaO and MgO hydration reaction due to the hydration reaction of CaO thereafter occurring of the hydration reaction of MgO, and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The prepared Mg crown were 58.8 g and 74.6 g by electric furnace and microwave furnace processes, respectively, under the reaction conditions of 1,230 ℃, 60 min, 5 × 10-2 torr by silicothermic reduction.

  • The reaction of hydration proceeded at the same time the vapor was introduced into the reactor that was filled with calcined dolomite. It has shown that the temperature has begun to fall from the bottom of reactor after increase of temperature by the heat of hydration reaction. The reaction initiated at the pipe wall and the heat was transfer to the center of block between the fins. The results show that the use of copper fin in the reactor reducted the hydration reaction time by half when compared to the case without using the fins.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the heat-storage/-release characteristics of the thermochemical reaction of the calcined dolomite and steam system for the application of regenerative heat exchangers with the packed bed shape experimental apparatus. The experimental data were obtained at the following conditions ; the hydration temperature was $150-400^{\circ}C$, the dehydration temperature was $700-800^{\circ}C$ and the steam mass flow rates were 294, 430 and 567 g/hr. In the present study, it was found that MgO of the calcined dolomite was not hydrated during the hydration process under the studied experimental conditions. Therefore, MgO of the calcined dolomite can be regard as an inert material. Because the reaction was proceeded from the packed bed input to packed bed output and from wall to center, it could be thought that the rate determining step is not the reaction itself but the heat transfer.

  • In order to utilize dolomite as a calcium/magnesium compound material, it was prepared highly reactive calcined dolomite(CaO·MgO) using a microwave kiln (950 ℃, 60 min). The experiment was performed according to the standard of the hydration test (ASTM C 110) and hydration reactivity was analyzed as medium reactivity (max 74.1 ℃, 5 min). Experiments were performed with calcined dolomite and salt (MgCl2·6H2O) (a) 1:1, (b) 1:1.5, and (c) 1:2 wt% based on the hydration reaction of calcined dolomite. The result of X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that MgO of calcined dolomite increased to Mg(OH)2 as the salt addition ratio increased. After the separating reaction, calcium was stirred at 80 ℃, 24 hr that produced CaCl2 of white crystal. XRD results, it was confirmed calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl2·(H2O)x) and CaO of calcined dolomite and salt additional reaction was separated into CaCl2. And it was synthesized with Ca(OH)2 99 wt% by NaOH adding reaction to the CaCl2 solution, and the synthesized Ca(OH)2 was manufactured CaO through the heat treatment process. In order to prepare calcium carbonate, CaCO3 was synthesized by adding Na2CO3 to CaCl2 solution, and the shape was analyzed in cubic form with a purity of 99 wt%.

  • The hydration of supersulphated slag cement which is the mixture of granuloated blast furnace slag anhydrite $C_4A_3$ type clinker and calcined dolomite was studied by X-ray diffraction differential thermal analysis scanning electron microscope observation and measurement of the rate of heat liberation. The main hydrates were ettrigite and C-S-H. This supersulphated slag cement enhanced rapid-hardening and increased in strength at early stage due to the much of ettrigite. Furthermore the hardened cement became stronger due to the C-S-H that was produced from the hydration of the $eta$-$C_2S$ in $C_4A_3$ type clinker and the hydration of the dissolved components from slag at later period.

  • A fluidized-bed reactor with an inside diameter of 0.1 m and a height of 1.2 m was used to study the effect of steam and catalyst additions to air-blown biomass gasification on the production of producer gas. The equipment consisted of a fluidized bed reactor, a fuel supply system, a cyclone, a condenser, two receivers, steam generator and gas analyzer. Silica sand with a mean particle diameter of $380{\mu}m$ was used as a bed material and calcined dolomite ($356{\mu}m$), which is effective in tar reduction and producer gas purification, was used as the catalyst. Both of Korea wood pellet (KWP) and a pellet form of EFB (empty fruit bunch) which is the byproduct of Southeast Asia palm oil extraction were examined as biomass feeds. In all the experiments, the feeding rates were 50 g/min for EFB and 38 g/min for KWP, respectively at the reaction temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and an ER (equivalence ratio) of 0.25. The mixing ratio (0~100 wt%) of catalyst was applied to the bed material. Air or an air-steam mixture was used as the injection gas. The SBR (steam to biomass ratio) was 0.3. The composition, tar content, and lower heating value of the generated producer gas were measured. The addition of calcined dolomite decreased tar content in the producer gas with maximum reduction of 67.3 wt%. The addition of calcined dolomite in the air gasification reduced lower heating value of the producer gas. However The addition of calcined dolomite in the air-steam gasification slightly increased its lower heating value.
