Dynamic earth pressure acting on geotechnical structures can be driving force or resisting force for the displacement of the structure according to the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and inertia force of structures. In this research, the evaluation procedure of the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and the inertia force was proposed. According to the procedure, numerical analyses on caisson foundation of bridges were performed and the phase relation was analyzed. The analysis results showed that the dynamic earth pressure becomes the driving force, which increases the displacement of the structure, if the displacement amplitude of ground is larger than that of structure due to the low stiffness of the ground, and the dynamic earth pressure becomes the resisting force against the displacement of the structure if the displacement amplitude of ground is smaller than that of structure due to the high stiffness of the ground.
A model experiment with a scale of 1:150 has been conducted to investigate the dynamic responses of a freestanding four-column bridge tower subjected to regular wave, random wave and coupled wave-current actions. The base shear forces of the caisson foundation and the dynamic behaviors of the superstructure were measured and analyzed. The comparisons of the test values with the theoretical values shows that wave-induced base shear forces on the bridge caisson foundation can be approximated by using a wave force calculation method in which the structure is assumed to be fixed and rigid. Although the mean square errors of the base shear forces excited by joint random wave and current actions are approximately equal to those excited by pure random waves, the existence of a forward current increases the forward base shear forces and decreases the backward base shear forces. The tower top displacements excited by wave-currents are similar to those excited by waves, suggesting that a current does not significantly affect the dynamic responses of the superstructure of the bridge tower. The experiment results can be used as a reference for similar engineering design.

Reliability and sensitivity analysis of the design parameters for a section of caisson type quaywall which is the most applicable in Korea were performed. It was tried to estimate probabilities of failure for the system of the multiple failure modes and to analyze LCC in the quaywall structure. The reliability analysis was performed by FORM. Also, sensitivity indices were estimated using the reliability indices, which may be used inferring effects of each design parameter on the reliability indices. As a result, the coefficient of friction between caisson and rubble, the moment by self weight and the moment of resistance mostly affected on the reliability indices in the sliding, overturning and foundation failure, respectively. System reliability theorem was applied in order to estimate the probabilities of failure for the system of the multiple failure modes. As the results of estimation of the probabilities of failure for the system, all cases were more conservative than those for the elements, according to both failure mode and load combination applied to series system. It entirely exceeded the target reliability index, but it was consistent with the theorem. According to the optimum LCC with the width of the caisson, the probability of failure exceeded the target probability of failure at then time. Therefore, it was judged to be insufficient to the practical application.

Damage level of coastal structures has been scaled up according to increase of wave height and duration of the storm due to the abnormal global climate change. So, the design criteria for new breakwaters is being intensified and structural strengthening is also conducted for the existing breakwaters. Recently, interlocking concept has been much attention to enhance the structural stability of the conventional caisson structure designed individually to resist waves. The interlocking caisson breakwater may be survival even if unusual high wave occurs because the maximum wave force may be reduced by phase lags among the wave forces acting on each caisson. In this study, the dispersion characteristics of wave forces using interlocking system that connect the upper part of caisson with cable in the normal direction of breakwater was investigated. A simplified linear model was developed for computational efficiency, in which the foundation and connection cables were modelled as linear springs, and caisson structures were assumed to be rigid. From numerical experiments, it can be found that the higher wave forces are transmitted through the cable as the angle of incident wave is larger, and the larger the stiffness of the interlocking cable makes larger wave dispersion effect.

In this paper, the measured results obtained from the ground improved by SCP method at quay-wall caisson foundation in Pusan New Port 1-1 phase are analyzed and then compared with the values predicted by a consolidation theory. The measured settlement is generally smaller than the predicted settlement. For consolidation velocity, the measured velocity is later than the predicted value. According to the execution of caisson placing phases, the predicted value shows higher settlement than the measured one with time being.
In this study, skin friction evaluation methods developed f3r deep foundation system were investigated and a method that can properly evaluate the skin friction of large size pneumatic caisson was proposed. Especially, based on Hong Won-Pyo's method, new technique (Kn parameter method) was suggested for estimation of the skin friction. The $\lambda$ method used widely to pile foundation was also investigated fur the applicability of estimation of the skin friction of large size pneumatic caisson. To do this, the data measured from the pneumatic caissons installed as a substructure of main tower in the suspension bridge part of Youngjong Grand Bridge were utilized. The data show that the skin friction is proportional to the rate of sinking, and the skin friction distribution with depth is similar to parabolic type rather straight line, which is a type generally observed in pile foundation. The skin frictions predicted by the Kn and $\lambda$ methods were plotted with the measured data for comparisons. It is cleary shown that the skin frictions estimated by the proposed Kn parameter method are well matched with the measured data. That is, for the large size pneumatic caisson having wide base, the new technique developed from Hong Won-Pyo's method is more suitable for estimation of the skin friction rather than the $\lambda$ method.
In this study, the characteristics of support behavior according to the change of ground condition of the cast-in-place pile and the large Caisson foundation, which are increasingly used as foundations of large structures and bridges. the allowable bearing capacity calculated using the yield load analysis method was analyzed to calculate similar allowable bearing capacity for each method. In addition, the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the ultimate load analysis method was found to have a large difference in bearing capacity for each method. Through this point, it can be usefully used as an empirical formula for evaluating the settlement characteristics of piles in future design and construction. In addition, as a result of examining the ground force distribution during sedimentation of large caissons, the section of the weathered rock layer showed almost constant ground force distribution as ground forces decreased after yield occurred at the base corner. And in the bed rock layer section, the foundation's center was transformed into a ground force in the form of a convex downward due to an increase in the ground resistance of the central part. Using these results, the theory previously presented by Fang (1991) and Kőgler (1936) was proved.

In recent years, active developments have taken place in Southeast Asia in various aspects of deep foundations. Some of these developments are reviewed in this Paper. These include techniques of behaviourial analysis such as Chin's Plot and Balasubramaniam's Pull-out Test. Also included are recent advances in small size piles, large bored piles and caisson foundations. The performance of and the experience gained in some of these foundations are highlighted.
In this study, vibration characteristics of offshore wind turbine tower (WTT) with gravity-based foundation (GBF) are identified from dynamic responses under wave-induced excitations. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the operational modal analysis methods such as frequency domain decomposition (FDD) and stochastic subspace identification (SSI) are selected to estimate modal parameters from output-only dynamic responses. Secondly, a GBF WTT model composed of superstructure, substructure and foundation is simulated as a case study by using a structural analysis program, MIDAS FEA. Thirdly, wave pressures acting on the WTT structure are established by nonlinear regular waves which are simulated from a computational fluid software, Flow 3D. Wave-induced acceleration responses of the target structure are analyzed by applying the simulated wave pressures to the GBF WTT model. Finally, modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are estimated from the output-only acceleration responses and compared with the results from free vibration analysis. The effect of wave height and period on modal parameter extraction is also investigated for the mode identification of the GBF WTT.

In offshore area, newly deposited Quaternary loose seabed soils are widely distributed. There are a great number of offshore structures has been built on them in the past, or will be built on them in the future due to the fact that there would be no very dense seabed soil foundation could be chosen at planed sites sometimes. However, loosely deposited seabed foundation would bring great risk to the service ability of offshore structures after construction. Currently, the understanding on wave-induced liquefaction mechanism in loose seabed foundation has been greatly improved; however, the recognition on the consolidation characteristics and settlement estimation of loose seabed foundation under offshore structures is still limited. In this study, taking a semi-coupled numerical model FSSI-CAS 2D as the tool, the consolidation and settlement of loosely deposited sandy seabed foundation under an offshore breakwater is investigated. The advanced soil constitutive model Pastor-Zienkiewics Mark III (PZIII) is used to describe the quasi-static behavior of loose sandy seabed soil. The computational results show that PZIII model is capable of being used for settlement estimation problem of loosely deposited sandy seabed foundation. For loose sandy seabed foundation, elastic deformation is the dominant component in consolidation process. It is suggested that general elastic model is acceptable for subsidence estimation of offshore structures on loose seabed foundation; however, Young's modulus E must be dependent on the confining effective stress, rather than a constant in computation.
