  • Purpose: This study was aimed at finding factors influencing cognitive impairment which is one of the typical symptoms among the demented elderly. Methods: The number of subjects was 417 elderly residents aged over 65 yr in a community. A cognitive function and a depression level were measured using the Korean Version of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) and the Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS). Alcohol abuse was measured using the CAGE instrument. Chi-square test and Logistic regression analysis were conducted to identify factors affecting cognitive impairment. Results: The prevalence rates of cognitive impairment of the sample was 43.5%. Sex, age, educational level, perceived health and alcohol abuse were strong factors influencing cognitive impairment. However, the effects of smoking, living alone, depression, family history in dementia and stroke were not strong. Conclusion: Risk for cognitive impairment were increased by being female and older than 70 yr, having low education, perceiving health as poor, and drinking alcohol abusively. Therefore, a reinforcement system, continuous research and the development of proper programs should be preformed in order to prevent cognitive impairment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of glucuronic acid (isolated from xylan) on antioxidative defense system in rat after aerobic exercise. The glucuronic acid was isolated from xylan. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 150$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to one normal group and three exercise training groups. Exercise training groups were classified to T (glucuronic acid free diet), TU (250 mg glucuronic acid/kg bw) and 2TU (500 mg glucuronic acid/kg bw) according to the level of glucuronic acid supplementation before exercise training. The experimental rats in exercise training groups (T, TU and 2TU) were exercised on glucuronic acid supplementation or rats in normal group (N) were confined in cage for 4 weeks. And rats were sacrificed with an overdose of pentobarbital injection just after running. Body weight, food intakes and food efficiency ratio (FER) were lower in the exercise training group than in the normal group. White gastrocnemius xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in the T group was 85% greater than that of the normal group, whereas in the TU and 2TU groups it did not differ from the normal group. White gastrocnemius superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in T group, that was decreased by 22% compared with that of N group, but those of TU and 2TU groups were increased by 38% and 42%, respectively, compared with that of T group. White gastrocnemius glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx) activity in T group, that was decreased by 42% compared with that of N group, but those of TU and 2TU groups were increased by 67% and 68%, respectively, compared with that of T group. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity of white gastrocnemius in N group was not significantly different from that in the T and TU groups, but 2TU group were increased by 12%. Contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) in T group was increased by 54%, compared with that of normal group but those of TU group and 2TU group were lower 44% and 36% than that of T group. In conclusion, the effects of glucuronic acids in exercise training rats would appear to reduce peroxidation of tissue as an antioxidative defense mechanism.

  • The implanted telemetry system provides the monitoring of species while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed. Each coil having different active area are driven by the coil driver. In this research, parallel resonance based coil driver was proposed. In addition, the device to detect where the receiver is positioned was proposed. From the experiments we show how to determine the driving condition of coil driver.

  • Apartment recently built in kitchen is made is made because the gas hose with built-in ways invisible inside the sink. In this case, if the gas leaks, it is a dangerous method that can accumulate inside the sink and lead to an explosion. In this study, since the hose connected between the gas range and the intermediate valve is inside the sink, it is not possible to test for gas leaks, so a valve system that can easily check for gas leaks using a pressure sensor was studied. As for the pressure measurement method, the pressure of the hose connecting the intermediate valve and the gas range was measured so that data could be collected and analyzed using the I2C communication method. In addition, the calculation of the gas pressure supplied to the home was investigated for the atmospheric pressure error for the value calculated by adding the average value of the gas gauge pressure of 22.46 mbar at the inlet of the gas meter to the atmospheric pressure. A valve system was developed to detect minute gas leaks.

  • This paper described the relationship between the behavior of the Israeli carp, Cyprinus carpio and the environmental noise level due to the dynamite explosion work. The experiment was conducted in the cage ($L10{\times}W4{\times}D4 m$) of aquaculture located at Chungjoo Lake, Chechon, in 1997. The fish trajectory was obtained by the telemetry system in which a pulsed ultrasonic pinger ($50 kHz, {\phi}16{\times}L70 mm$) attached to the fish was tracked three dimensionally, and the underwater noise levels were measured. The results of the study were as follows: 1. The underwater noise levels in the normal blasting measured at a distance of 400 m from the source of noise increased by $40 dB (re 1 {\mu}Pa)$ compared to the levels before explosion. The dominant frequency and the increased power spectrum level of the underwater noise by the explosion work were $75 to 100 Hz and 22.9 to 35.3 dB$, respectively. 2. The underwater noise levels in the test blasting measured at a distance of 350 m from the source of noise increased by average $49.5 dB (re 1 {\mu}Pa)$compared to the levels before explosion. 3. The swimming area of the fish was reduced with the time after explosion, and after more than one hour the fish represented the similar swimming area and behavior to the status of right before explosion. 4, The swimming depth layer of the fish was most of the case at the sea surface less than 1,0 m except during explosion or right after of it. But the fish swam downward when an external stimulus like the explosion noise was given to the fish. 5. The average swimming speeds of the fish before, during and after the works were about 1.2 times, 1.9 times and 1.0 times of the body length, respectively, and the speed of the fish with explosion was faster 1.6 times than the speed without of that. Consequently, the explosion noise levels measured by this study were sufficiently high to affect the fish, and the heavy shock by the explosion works could produce a considerable unfavorable effects to the fish.

Survey method by interview and mail was adopted to carry out the research, and the total number of data used to statistical analyses was k6 poultry farmers. 1. The ratio of the poultry farmers who had the personal computer(P/C) was about 25%, and the most of the layer farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above had the P/C. 2. About 70% of the farmers who had P/C have bought the system after 1993, and 83% of those farmers had the P/C-486 or above level system. They bought the P/C with intent to apply it to farm management(39%) and education for children(31%). 3. About 50% of the farmers who had P/C obtained the relevant knowledge for operating computer system by themselves, and the 33% of the P/C-possessed farmers used P/C for word-processor. 4. About 35% of the farmers who had P/C applied their system to analyse the management analyses, and the sarne ratio of the farmers answered that they didn't apply the system to their farm management. 5. About 25% of the farmers who had P/C used package software, and the company which installed the automated cage system offered the software. 6. Most of the farmers considered the computerization of the farm management positively, and they answered that they will apply P/C to their management actively from now on. 7. About 56% of the farmers didn't think that they had sufficient knowledge for operating computer system, and a quarter of them pointed that the difficulty of the buying software for poultry farm management was the most biggest problem to spread out the computerization in the poultry farm. 8. Most of the poultry farmers didn't buy P/C because they didn't have the relevant knowledge for computer system, but they wanted to learn basic knowledge for computer, and they had the intention to apply computer to their management positively. In order to expand the computerization for poultry farm management, appropriate education system for the farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above and the development of the software that could be applied to poultry farm management on the spot efficiently should be made.

  • Well designed idealistic zoo requires basically a condition that the zoo is much ecologically considered for the exhibited animals, and secondly where they offer leisure for the visitors' convenience and pleasure. But it is not easy to find a zoo where they have actualized these both-sided purposes. We cannot but discuss the problem of design caused by a lack of plan-ability that is necessary when the zoo is designed. It is because every elements are not wholly unified and those diversified contents aren't mutually harmonized. Therefore, a zoo has to meet the requirement of the pleasure, study, inspection and leisure deserves a special emphasis. The zoo requires a synthesized speculation of design which the elements-Identity Program, Furniture System, animal's ecological environment, animal's showroom, cage and facilities etc., - are mutually harmonized. This study is a combined-design research on the Daegu Dal-sung Park in this concept. 1 have newly analyzed the Dal-sung Park's utilizing form in order to harmonize both visual and ecological environments.

  • Induction motors are the most commonly used electrical drives because they are rugged, mechanically simple, adaptable to widely different operating conditions, and simple to control. The most common faults in squirrel-cage induction motors are bearing, stator and rotor faults. Surveys conducted by the IEEE and EPRI show that the most common fault in induction motor is bearing failure (${\sim}$40% of failure). Thence, this paper addresses experimental results for diagnosing faults with different rolling element bearing damage via motor current spectral analysis. Rolling element bearings generally consist of two rings, an inner and outer, between which a set of balls or rollers rotate in raceways. We set the experimental test bed to detect the rolling-element bearing misalignment of 3 type induction motors with normal condition bearing system, shaft deflection system by external force and a hole drilled through the outer race of the shaft end bearing of the four pole test motor. This paper takes the initial step of investigating the efficacy of current monitoring for bearing fault detection by incipient bearing failure. The failure modes are reviewed and the characteristics of bearing frequency associated with the physical construction of the bearings are defined. The effects on the stator current spectrum are described and related frequencies are also determined. This is an important result in the formulation of a fault detection scheme that monitors the stator currents. We utilized the FFT, Wavelet analysis and averaging signal pattern by inner product tool to analyze stator current components. The test results clearly illustrate that the stator signature can be used to identify the presence of a bearing fault.
