E. coli was tested for their ability to uptake cadmium intracellularly, and the effect of zinc and calcium on cadmium toxicity to E. coli was observed. In addition, the effect of zinc and calcium on the uptake of cadimium was also studied. This study showed that living E. coli cells took up more cadmium than the dead cells. E. coli in the log phase uptake cadimiumm more actively than E. coli in the stationary phase. These results suggested that there may be metabolic reactions or compounds which encourage the uptake of cadimium. This study also showed that cadimium was sequestered by cell components of which molecular weight is about 30,000. Adding of zinc and calcium chloride reduced cadmium toxicity in E. coli and encouraged intracellular uptake by E coli. However adding of heavy metal solutions helped the microorganisms to adsorb more cadmium. Extremely high or low concentrations of zinc, however, did not affect cell viability.
To evaluate the cytotoxicity of cadmium compounds, this study was conducted to measure the in vitro magnetometry, LDH release and cellular apoptosis using alveolar macrophages of hamsters. A series of magnetometric measurements in cadmium-added groups showed a significant dose-dependent decay of the relaxation curves. The LDH release rates showed a dose-dependently increasing tendency as the dose gradually increased. The positive rates of apoptosis were significantly higher in cadmium-added groups than the control groups. Conclusively, the cytotoxicity increased in a dose dependent way as the concentration of cadmium added increased, which reflected in the decay of relaxation curve in magnetometry, and increased LDH release rate and positive rate of apoptosis.
This study was performed to investigate the antitoxic component in methanol fraction of Lonicerae fios. The results were as follows: 1. When a 500 ppm of water soluble fraction of Lonicerae flos was administered, it showed the highest antitoxic effect. 2. Generally, detoxication effects by methanol fraction of Lonicerae fios increased. When the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of Lonicerae rios was administered, it exhibited the highest antitoxic effect against the toxicity of cadmium in Liver. 3. The combined administration of cadmium and methanol fraction of Lonicerae rios significantly increased metallothionein in liver compared to administration of cadmium only. This phenomenon was more remarkable when the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of Lonicerae fios was administered with cadmium chloride.
This study was performed to investigate the effects of cadmium chloride on the acute and chronic toxicity on rats. Several toxic effects of cadmium has been shown following short-term and longterm pretreatment with cadmium and zinc. Four groups of rats (A, B, C, D), each consisting of 16 rats, were studied and each group was divided into four subgroups (1, 2, 3, 4), 4 rats for each subgroup. Rats were subcutaneously pretreated with $CdCl_2$ (0.5 mg/kg, A & C), and $ZnCl_2$ (13.0 mg/kg, B & D) during time periods of 1 weeks (group A & B) and 6 weeks (group C & D). At the end of the period, rats were challenged with $CdCl_2$ (3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 mg/kg, i.p.). After giving the challenge dose, cadmium and metallothionein(MT) concentrations were determined. The concentrations of cadmium were higher in the liver than the kidney irrelevantly to cadmium and zinc pretreatment and increased dose-dependently to the challenge dosage. The metallothioneins showed higher concentrations in the liver than the kidney following cadmium pretreatment and were higher in the long-term pretreatment groups than the short-term pretreatment groups in the liver and the kidney of rats. These data suggest that metallothioneins are induced preferentially in the liver by pretreatment of cadmium and then, formed in the form of Cd-MT, may play an important role in the nephrotoxicity.
A study on the antitoxic effects of Semen Mungo extracts against Cadmium Chloride Toxicity in Rats This study was performed to find out the effect of Semen mungo against Cadmium toxicity. The experimental rats were divided into 5 groups such as control group, Cadmium alone treatment group, three simultaneous treatment groups of semen mungo and cadmium. Rats were given pellets administration with three dosage of semen mungo glabrae such as 4mg/kg body weight for four weeks. The results were summarized as follows on: ' 1. The simultaneously administration of semen mungo and cadmium significantly more decreased cadmium concentration in liver and kidney tissues compared to the administration of cadmium alone.(p<0.05) 2. The simultaneously administration of semen mungo and cadmium significantly more decreased metallothionein concentration in liver and kidney tissues compared to administration of cadmium alone(p<0.05) 3. When liver and kidney tissues were observed with optical microscope obvious changes were visible in those tissues.1
Effect of freeze drying leek against cadmium poisoning on glutathione peroxidase, on glutathione reductase and on glutathione-s-transferase in liver, kidney and testes of the male rats during the administered period. In this experiment, male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were used. The rats which were fed for 15 weeks were divided into 4 groups basal diet 3% leek added diet basal diet and cadmium in water and 3% leek added diet and cadmium in water. Cadmium was administered ad libitum 100ppm CdCl$_{2}$ in distilled water. The followings are the result of this experiment. 1. Leek enhanced the glutathione peroxidase activities which were reduced by cadmium treatment in liver, kidney and testes but not significance. 2. Leek reduced glutathione reductase activities which were incresed by cadmium in liver, kidney and testes. 3. Leek incresed the activities of glutathfone-s-transferase in liver but not in kidney and but not in testes. 4. Leek incresed glutathione concentration which was decresed by cadmium treatment in liver and kidney but not testes. This experiment showed that leek-addition group had protective effect against cadmium poisoning and alleviated GR and glutathione-s-transferase activities in tissues. Leek incresed activities of glutathione peroxidase in liver, kidney and testes but not significance. Therefore, this experiment concluded that leek defensive power against long term cadmium poisoning.
Thirty five male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with cadmium chloride solution ranging from 0.2 to 3.2mg $CdCl_2/kg$ by intravenous single injection. At 48 hours after administration of cadmium, total cadmium, MT bound cadmium and histopathologic finding in liver, kidney, lung, heart, testis, metallothionein in liver, kidney and total cadmium in bleed were examined. Tissue cadmium concentration was highest in liver, followed by in kidney, heart, lung and testis. Cadmium bound to rnetallothionein (MT-Cd) and ratio of MT-Cd to total cadmium were increased in liver and kidney dependently of cadmium exposure dose, but not significantly changed in other organs. On histopathologic finding, the most susceptible organ was heart in considering cadmium exposed dose, but testis in considering cadmium concentration. Blood cadmium concentration was increased with dose-dependent pattern, and significantly correlated with tissue cadmium concentration, so that we may estimate tissue cadmium concentration by measurement of blood cadmium concentration. Metallothionein in liver and kidney was increased with dose-dependent pattern, higher in liver than in kidney, and was significantly correlated with tissue cadmium concentration. However, metallothionein induction efficiency of tissue cadmium(${\mu}g\;MT/{\mu}g\;Cd$) was eater in liver than in kidney, and reverse to tissue concentration or exposed dose of cadmium.
A study on the antitoxic effects of Herba Taraxaci extracts against Cadmium Chloride Toxicity in Rats. This study was performed to find out the effect of taraxacum platy carpum against Cadmium toxicity. The experimental rats were divided into 5 groups such as control group, Cadmium alone treatment group, three simultaneous treatment groups of taraxacum platy carpum and cadmium. Rat were given pellets administration with three dosage of taraxacum platy carpum such as 4 mg/kg body weight for four weeks. The results were summarized as follows on: 1. The simultaneously administration of taraxacum platy carpum and cadmium significantly more decreased cadmium concentration in liver and kidney tissues compared to the administration of cadmium alone. (p<0.05) 2. The simultaneously administration of taraxacum platy carpum and cadmium significantly more increased metallothionein concentration in liver and kidney tissues compared to administration alone. (p<0.05) 3. When liver and kidney tissues were observed with optical microscope obvious changes were visible in those tissue.
