  • This paper presents an application of the TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) to the monitoring of the deformation of rock mass with grouted coaxial cables through laboratory tests. The grouted cable can easily deform together with the rock mass movements, and the deformed cable loses its original capacitance and the reflected waveform produced along the deformed cable consequently represents a change of voltage pulse. Therefore, it is possible to monitor the deformation of rock mass by measuring the changes in these reflection signatures. Shear test of the cemented mortar containing a specimen of coaxial cable showed that the shear deformation correlated linearly with the reflection coefficient, so the TDR was effective to monitor the displacement of the rock mass. Bending test were carried out in order to determine the influence of the crooked cables on the monitoring of rock mass movements. Controlled cirmping and shearing test upon a cable of 50 m long, 12.7 mm diameter showed not only the fact that the reflection amplitudes decreased as the cable length increased but also the proper crimping depth, width and interval between two adjacent crimps. Two coaxial cables-one 100 m long and other 175m long-were installed and grouted into the separate boreholes drilled in a sedimentary formation. The behavior of the cable was monitored with metallic TDR cable tester to measure rock mass deformation based on the interpretative techniques developed through laboratory tests.

  • Cables are critical components of cable-stayed bridges. A structural health monitoring system provides real-time cable tension recording for cable health monitoring. However, the measurement data involve multiple sources of variability, i.e., varying environmental and operational factors, which increase the complexity of cable condition monitoring. In this study, a one-class classification method is developed for cable condition assessment using Bayesian factor analysis (FA). The single-peaked vehicle-induced cable tension is assumed to be relevant to vehicle positions and weights. The Bayesian FA is adopted to establish the correlation model between cable tensions and vehicles. Vehicle weights are assumed to be latent variables and the influences of different transverse positions are quantified by coefficient parameters. The Bayesian theorem is employed to estimate the parameters and variables automatically, and the damage index is defined on the basis of the well-trained model. The proposed method is applied to one cable-stayed bridge for cable damage detection. Significant deviations of the damage indices of Cable SJS11 were observed, indicating a damaged condition in 2011. This study develops a novel method to evaluate the health condition of individual cable using the FA in the Bayesian framework. Only vehicle-induced cable tensions are used and there is no need to monitor the vehicles. The entire process, including the data pre-processing, model training and damage index calculation of one cable, takes only 35 s, which is highly efficient.

  • This paper begins by analyzing cable vibrations due to external excitations and their effects on the overall dynamic behavior of cable-stayed bridges. It is concluded that if the natural frequency of a cable approaches any natural frequency of the bridge, the cable loses its rigidity and functionality. The results of this analysis explain the phenomenon that occurred on the Dubrovnik Bridge in Croatia during a storm and measures for its retrofit. A field test was conducted before the bridge was opened to traffic. It was concluded: "The Bridge excited unpleasant transverse superstructure vibration with the frequency of approximately 0.470 Hz. Hence, it seems possible that a pair of stays vibrating in phase may excite deck vibrations". Soon after this Bridge opened, a storm dumped heavy damp snow in the area, causing the six longest cable stay pairs of the main span to undergo large-amplitude vibrations, and the superstructure underwent considerable displacements in combined torsion-sway and bending modes. This necessitated rehabilitation measures for the Bridge including devices to suppress the large-amplitude vibrations of cables. The rehabilitation and monitoring of the Bridge are also presented here.

  • In this paper, wireless health monitoring of stay cables using piezoelectric strain sensors and a smart skin technique is presented. For the cables, tension forces are estimated to examine their health status from vibration features with consideration of temperature effects. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, the tension force estimation utilizing the piezoelectric sensor-embedded smart skin is presented. A temperature correlation model to recalculate the tension force at a temperature of interest is designed by correlating the change in cable's dynamic features and temperature variation. Secondly, the wireless health monitoring system for stay cables is described. A piezoelectric strain sensor node and a tension force monitoring software which is embedded in the sensor are designed. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed monitoring technique is evaluated on stay cables of the Hwamyung Grand Bridge in Busan, Korea.

  • Dynamic deflection is important for evaluating the performance of a long-span cable-stayed bridge, and its continuous measurement is still cumbersome. This study proposes a dynamic deflection monitoring method for cable-stayed bridge based on Bi-directional Long Short-term Memory (BiLSTM) neural network taking advantages of the characteristics of spatial variation of cable acceleration response (CAR) and main girder deflection response (MGDR). Firstly, the relationship between the spatial and temporal variation of the CAR and the MGDR is described based on the geometric deformation of the bridge. Then a data-driven relational model based on BiLSTM neural network is established using CAR and MGDR data, and it is further used to monitor the MGDR via measuring the CAR. Finally, numerical simulations and field test are conducted to verify the proposed method. The root mean squared error (RMSE) of the numerical simulations are less than 4 while the RMSE of the field test is 1.5782, which indicate that it provides a cost-effective and convenient method for real-time deflection monitoring of cable-stayed bridges.

  • The cable-based retractable membrane roof makes it impossible to maintain its shape and stiffness during driving process, unlike the hard-type retractable roof. Consequently, monitoring using a relatively simple wireless video transmission device is required. However, since video data has a bigger transmission rating than other monitoring data in terms of the structure velocity or acceleration, there is a need to develop transmission device that is easy to install and entails low maintenance cost. This paper studies on a real-time video transmission system for monitoring the cable-based retractable membrane roof while driving. A video transfer software, using the mobile network, is designed and the embedded system is constructed. Ultimately, the data transmission server is tested. Connecting a trolley to the system allows testing of the validity and efficiency of the developed system through the video data transmitted in the driving process. Result of the test shows that the developed system enables multi-device data transfer with monitoring via the mobile network.

  • Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS) works as an efficient platform for monitoring the health status and performance deterioration of engineering structures during long-term service periods. The objective of its installation is to provide reasonable suggestions for structural maintenance and management, and therefore ensure the structural safety based on the information extracted from the real-time measured data. In this paper, the SHMS implemented on a world-famous kilometer-level cable-stayed bridge, named as Sutong Cable-stayed Bridge (SCB), is introduced in detail. The composition and core functions of the SHMS on SCB are elaborately presented. The system consists of four main subsystems including sensory subsystem, data acquisition and transmission subsystem, data management and control subsystem and structural health evaluation subsystem. All of the four parts are decomposed to separately describe their own constitutions and connected to illustrate the systematic functions. Accordingly, the main techniques and strategies adopted in the SHMS establishment are presented and some extension researches based on structural health monitoring are discussed. The introduction of the SHMS on SCB is expected to provide references for the establishment of SHMSs on long-span bridges with similar features as well as the implementation of potential researches based on structural health monitoring.

  • This study presents a novel monitoring technique for underwater high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables based on the Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS). The proposed technique utilizes vibration and acoustic signals generated on HVDC cables to monitor their condition and detect events such as earthquakes, shipments, tidal currents, and construction activities. To implement the monitoring system, a DAS based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) system was designed, fabricated, and validated for performance. For the HVDC cable monitoring experiments, a testbed was constructed on land, mimicking the cable burial method and protective equipment used underwater. Defined various scenarios that could cause cable damage and conducted experiments accordingly. The developed DAS system achieved a maximum measurement distance of 50 km, a distance measurement interval of 2 m, and a measurement repetition rate of 1 kHz. Extensive experiments conducted on HVDC cables and protective facilities demonstrated the practical potential of the DAS system for monitoring underwater and underground areas.

  • In this study, the Bayesian probabilistic framework is investigated for modal identification and modal identifiability based on the field measurements provided in the structural health monitoring benchmark problem of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge named Ting Kau Bridge (TKB). The comprehensive structural health monitoring system on the cable-stayed TKB has been operated for more than ten years and it is recognized as one of the best test-beds with readily available field measurements. The benchmark problem of the cable-stayed bridge is established to stimulate investigations on modal identifiability and the present paper addresses this benchmark problem from the Bayesian prospective. In contrast to deterministic approaches, an appealing feature of the Bayesian approach is that not only the optimal values of the modal parameters can be obtained but also the associated estimation uncertainty can be quantified in the form of probability distribution. The uncertainty quantification provides necessary information to evaluate the reliability of parametric identification results as well as modal identifiability. Herein, the Bayesian spectral density approach is conducted for output-only modal identification and the Bayesian model class selection approach is used to evaluate the significance of different modes in modal identification. Detailed analysis on the modal identification and modal identifiability based on the measurements of the bridge will be presented. Moreover, the advantages and potentials of Bayesian probabilistic framework on structural health monitoring will be discussed.
