  • Buffeting induced resonance (BIR) of hangers on long-suspension bridges is briefly reviewed, including mechanism and experimental verification. Taken the Xihoumen suspension bridge as a numerical example, sensitivities of the BIR of hangers to wind properties are investigated, including types of wind spectrum, turbulence intensity, and spacial coherence of wind fluctuations. Numerical simulations indicate that the BIR of hangers occur to both cases of different wind spectra, showing that it is insensitive to types of wind spectrum. On the other hand, it is found that the turbulence intensity affects buffeting of main cables almost in a linear manner, and so it does to the BIR of the hangers; however, the resonance factors, namely the ratio of the response of the hanger to that of the main cable, are little affected by the turbulence intensity. The spacial coherence of the wind fluctuations, although plays an important role on the buffeting responses of the main structure, has no substantial effects on the BIR of the hangers. Finally, replacement of steel strand with CFRP material has been verified as a very effective countermeasure against the BIR of hangers.

  • In this paper, we deal with a hierarchical location-allocation problem in designing the broadband convergence networks (BcN). The objective is to minimize the total cost of switch and cable while satisfying the quality of service (QoS). We formulate the problem as an integer programming model and develop the Tabu Search (TS) heuristic algorithm to find a good feasible solution within a reasonable time limit. Initial solution is obtained by using the tree structure. Three neighborhood generation mechanisms are used by local search heuristic: insertion, switch up, and switch down. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we generate lower bounds from nonlinear QoS relaxation problem. We present promising computational results of the proposed solution procedures.

  • In this paper, we propose a cooperative motion planning algorithm for two tightly-coupled mobile robots. Specifically, the considered cooperative work is that two mobile robots should transfer a long rigid object along a predefined path. To resolve the problem, we introduce a master-slave concept for two obile robots having the same structure. According to the velocity of the master robot and the positions of two robots on the path, the velocity of the slave robot is determined. The slave normally tracks the master's motion, but in case that the velocity of the slave exceeds the velocity limit, the roles of the robots should be interchanged. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is proved by computer simulations.

  • The analysis of a coaxial cable with periodic slots as a leaky-wave antenna is considered. The mode matching method and method of moments with Galerkin testing procedure is then used to obtain the determinantal equation for the unknown leaky-wave propagating constant. Both technigues allow the fields to be obtained in any region, and the radiation characteristics of the structure. By resorting to a suitable numerical techniques, it is possible to calculate the leaky-wave propagating constants and the radiation patterns. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of the technique.

  • Flutter derivatives provide the basis of predicting the critical wind speed in flutter and buffeting analysis of long-span cable-supported bridges. In this paper, one popular stochastic system identification technique, covariance-driven Stochastic Subspace Identification(SSI in short), is firstly presented for estimation of the flutter derivatives of bridge decks from their random responses in turbulent flow. Secondly, wind tunnel tests of a streamlined thin plate model and a ${\Pi}$ type blunt bridge section model are conducted in turbulent flow and the flutter derivatives are determined by SSI. The flutter derivatives of the thin plate model identified by SSI are very comparable to those identified by the unifying least-square method and Theodorson's theoretical values. As to the ${\Pi}$ type section model, the effect of turbulence on aerodynamic damping seems to be somewhat notable, therefore perhaps the wind tunnel tests for flutter derivative estimation of those models with similar blunt sections should be conducted in turbulent flow.

  • Experimental and simulation results are presented on the Aperture-Coupled microstrip patch antennal with U-shaped slot. Experiment and simulation results include impedance bandwidth, copolar and crosspolar-pattern characteristics and gain measurements. Simulation results show the advantages of U-slotted patch antenna comparing with the normal patch antenna. More than 35% impedance bandwidth is obtained with reasonably restricted cross-polar radiation pattern. The U-slotted radiation element fed by aperture-coupling method can be more easily extended to array structure, compared with that fed by coaxial cable.

  • In this paper, the cost-effective design of output reactor which is used to suppress the over-voltage at the motor terminal in the Adjustable Speed Drives(ASD) application is proposed. In the elevator drive system, the power cable length is relatively shorter than other ASD applications and then the over-voltage at the motor terminal depends on the frequency characteristics of the output reactor at the over-voltage operating frequency. The over-voltage suppression mechanism of output reactor in ASD application is analyzed and the dominant parameters of output reactor for the over-voltage suppression are extracted. Using these parameters as the design values and considering the high frequency characteristics of iron core in the reactor, a new cost-effective structure of output reactor is proposed. Experimental results of the conventional reactor and the proposed reactor with a 15kW induction motor are given to verify the proposed scheme.

  • In order to replace the jacket material for URD power cables, the 6 kinds of polyethylene compounds were manufactured and evaluated. The characteristics of the compounds were investigated by water vapor transmission (WVT) test, thermal and mechanical test. In WVT test, all the polyethylene compounds showed the superior water resistance to conventional PVC. The molecular structure and density of polyethylene play an important role in WVT. Also, the polyethylene compounds showed the suitable characteristics in thermal and mechanical test. Especially, the linear polyethylene compounds showed the superior characteristics to LDPE ones. Due to the fillers in compounds, the abrasion resistance was decreased and the cut-through resistance was increased. From this study, it can be considered that the polyethylene compounds may be suitable to jacket material for URD power cables.

  • The main faults at cable joint are mainly originate from double layered structure, which is composed of different kinds of materials such as XLPE/EPDM laminatest. In this paper, to investigate the effect of interfacial condition and coagents on dielectric strength of XLPE/EPDM, we prepared XLPE/grease/EPDM, XLPE/grease + coagent/EPDM laminates. Dielectric strength of the XLPE/EPDM laminates pasted with the grease compounded crosslinking coagent (TMPTA, TMPTMA) is higher than that of the laminates paseted with the grease without coagent.

  • This study purports to analyze equally stressed surfaces in tension-membrane structures through a geometrically nonlinear approach. It adopts the formulation of a 4-node quadrilateral isoparametric plane stress element considering the orthotropic characteristic of membrane textures. Tension structures, which include cables and tension membranes, such as a cable dome initially exhibit unstable conditions because no initial internal stiffness such as bending stiffness is present. Such a structural system requires prestressing to the tension members to attain a stable state. A tension-membrane structure retains a stable three dimensional curved surface as a structural shape. This analytical process for finding the geometry is referred to as Shape Finding Analysis. In order to assess the validity of this study, we examine equally stressed surfaces of saddle and catenary shape shell structures and carry out pertinent stress analyses
