In this study, antibacterial glasses were developed by the addition of CaO in ZnO-Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glass system. The effect of the addition of CaO on the thermal properties, dissolution properties, surface zeta potential and antibacterial activity were analyzed. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) analysis was performed to analyze the thermophysical properties of 30ZnO-xCaO-20Na2O-30B2O3-(20-x)SiO2 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 mol%). It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature decreased as the CaO content increased. The amount of released Zn2+ ions and surface zeta potential of glass samples increased with increasing CaO concentration. For these reasons, the antibacterial activity was dramatically improved. By the addition of CaO, we could successfully develop an antibacterial glass with 99.9 % antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

The viscosities of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ flux were measured under the condition of $CaO/SiO_2=1.0-1.3$ and 5-20 wt%MgO. Submerged arc welding flux with $5wt%Al_2O_3$ content had the lowest critical temperature and widest solid-liquid coexisting region at about 5 wt%MgO. It indicateds that both critical temperature and viscosity depend on the kind of primary phase of molten flux. Viscous behavior of the molten flux at 1773 K was analyzed in the view of silicate structure changed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Based on the critical temperature and the behavior of viscosity at a fixed temperature, it could be proposed that the contents of MgO and $Al_2O_3$ in SAW flux show a pronounced effect on preventing contamination in maintaining the liquid phase flux after welding process.
It is well known that the addition of CaO-SiO$_2$to Mn-Zn ferrites forms an insulating grain bounary layer with high electrical resistivity. This study investigated the effect of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ on the electromagnetic properties of high frequency low loss Mn-Zn ferrites. The addition of 300ppm Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ developed an exaggerated grain growth while the addition of CaO-SiO$_2$addition with 200ppm Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ more effectively increased the density than that without Nb$_2$O$_{5}$. The addition of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ showed the lower power loss below 100 ppm SiO$_2$and the Nb$_2$O$_{5}$-CaO addition lowered the power loss at higher sintering temperature.
Calcium aluminate glasses transmit light at relatively long wavelengths up to 6 ㎛ and exhibit also low Rayleigh scattering values. However they have a tendency to get devitrified easily, which limits their use as routine optical materials. Here, the ternary system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses with low-silica (<30 mol%) were prepared to prevent the devitrification of CaO-Al2O3 glasses and the properties were investigated as functions of composition. The addition of SiO2 to calcium aluminate glasses promoted their stability, which was due to the decrease of non-bridging oxygens and the reconnection of network. As SiO2 was added, density, refractive index, molar volume of oxygens and thermal expansion coefficient decreased continuously. But the glass transition temperatures with increasing SiO2 contents were raised and then lowered. It was postulated that the anomaly was related to the changes of the middle range order as well as the short range order. As the amount of SiO2 in the glass was increased, the IR cut-off values moved to shorter wavelength owing to 'Si-O' antisymetric stretching vibration. The IR cut-off wavelength of the glasses with 5 and 30 mol% SiO2 was 4.90, 4.55 ㎛, respectively.

Elelctrical properties of $BaTiO_3$ were characterized with addition of $Y_2O_3, CaO,SiO_2$ and Mn to develope the composition of PTC thermistor suitable as a current limiting device for automobile motor system. With the addition of 0.2 mol% $Y_{2}O_3$ to $BaTiO_3$, the minimum resistance of 16.5 ${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm was obtained at room temperature. $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004})TiO_3$ exibited a minimum resistance of 50${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm with addition of 1.6 mol% $SiO_2$. The grain size of $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004})TiO_3$ decreased from 34.95 ${\mu}$m to 13.4 ${\mu}$m and thus breakdown voltage could be improved by changing the composition as $(Ba_{0.996}Y_{0.004}Ca_{0.05}) TiO_3$ with substition of 5 mol% Ca into Basites. When 0.04 mol% Mn was added, the optimum PTCR properties could be obtained : the resistivity at room temperature and ${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}_{min}$ were 30~40${\Omega}{\cdot}$cm and $1.5{\times}10^5$ respectively.
The structures of fully dehydrated Ca2+- and Rb+-exchanged zeolite X, Ca31Rb30Si100Al92O384(Ca31Rb30-X; a=25.009(1) Å) and Ca28Rb36Si100Al92O384(Ca28Rb36-X; a=24.977(1) Å), have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods in the cubic space group Fd&bar{3} at 21(1) ℃. Their structures were refined to the final error indices R1=0.048 and R2=0.041 with 236 reflections for Ca31Rb30-X, and R1=0.052 and R2=0.043 with 313 reflections for Ca28Rb36-X; I>3σ(I). In both structures, Ca2+ and Rb+ ions are located at six different crystallographic sites. In dehydrated Ca31Rb30-X, sixteen Ca2+ ions fill site I, at the centers of the double 6-rings (Ca-O=2.43(1) Å and O-Ca-O=93.3(3)°). Another fifteen Ca2+ ions occupy site II (Ca-O=2.29(1) Å, O-Ca-O=119.5(5)°) and fifteen Rb+ ions occupy site II opposite single six-rings in the supercage; each is 1.60 Å from the plane of three oxygens (Rb-O=2.77(1) Å and O-Rb-O=91.1(4)°). About two Rb+ ions are found at site II', 1.99 Å into sodalite cavity from their three-oxygen plane (Rb-O=2.99(1) Å and O-Rb-O=82.8(4)°). The remaining thirteen Rb+ ions are statistically distributed over site III, a 48-fold equipoint in the supercages on twofold axes (Rb-O=3.05(1) Å and Rb-O=3.38(1) Å). In dehydrated Ca28Rb36-X, sixteen Ca2+ ions fill site I (Ca-O=2.41(1) Å and O-Ca-O=93.6(3)°) and twelve Ca2+ ions occupy site II (Ca-O=2.31(1) Å, O-Ca-O=119.7(4)°). Sixteen Rb+ ions occupy site II; each is 1.60 Å from the plane of three oxygens (Rb-O=2.81(1) Å and O-Rb-O=90.6(3)°) and four Rb+ ions occupy site II'; each is 1.88 Å into sodalite cavity from their three-oxygen plane (Rb-O=2.99(1) Å and O-Rb-O=83.8(2)°). The remaining sixteen Rb+ ions are found at III site in the supercage (Rb-O=2.97(1) Å and Rb-O=3.39(1) Å). It appears that Ca2+ ions prefer sites I and II in that order, and that Rb+ ions occupy the remaining sites. Rb+ ions are too large to be stable at site I, when they are competing with other smaller cations like Ca2+ ions.

The crystal phases precipitated in various compositions glass of CaO-$SiO_2-P_2O_5$ system, were identified by XRD. E composition (CaO 49.4, $SiO_2\;36.8,\;P_2O_5$ 8.8 wt%) glass in which both apatite(($Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6O$ and $\beta$-wollastonite($CaSiO_3$) crystals would precipitate by heating, was selected as an experimental composition to prepare the glass ceramics with high bending strength and good bioactivity to the living bone. Glass powders of E composition were unidirectionally crystallized at $1050^{\circ}$C in the temperature-gadient furnace and the resultant glass ceramics were characterized. Bending strength of the glass ceramics was also measured. To investigate the bond forming ability between the glass ceramics and living bone tissue, soaking test of glass ceramics in simulated body fluid was carried out. Densed glass ceramics composed of apatite and $\beta$-wollastonite crystal were prepared by unidirectional crystallization under the optimum conditions. (2 0 2) plane of $\beta$-wollastonite crystals tended to grow perpendicularly to the crystallization direction. Average bending strength of this glass ceramics was 186.9 MPa, higher than that of the glass ceramics prepared by isothermal (not directional) crystallization In soaking test, a thin layer of apatite crystallite was formed on surface of the glass ceramics in 3 days. Apatite crystals formed on the glass ceramics could be act a role to make the chemical bond between the glass ceramics and living bone tissue.
Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ added to the solution affects the hydration of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ with calcium sulfate. The reaction between 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ Fe$_2$O$_3$and CaSO$_4$ㆍ 2$H_2O$ decrease with increasing amount of Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ in solution, owing to low hydraulic reactivity of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$by the adsorption of silicate ions on the surface of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles. The dissolution rate of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles deceased with the increase of the concentration of silicate ion in solution. When the 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ particles was hydrated in gypsum - Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ solution, the hydration was retarded and the rate could not discriminate between formation of ettringite and that of monosulfate, and it stopped in high concentration of silicate ions. However, silicate ion did not any effect on the dissolution rate of gypsum.ypsum.

In this study, the glass frit of $PbO-TiO-2-SiO_2-BaO-ZnO-Al_2O-3-CaO-B_2O_3-Bi_2O_3-MgO$ system was manufactured. The glass was melted at $1,400{\circ}C$, quenched and attrition-milled. The glass frit powder was pressed and fired for 2h at the range of $750~1,000{\circ}C$. The crystallization of glass frit began at about $750{\circ}$ and at low temperature, the main crystal phases were hexagonal celsian($BaAl_2Si_2O_8$) and alumina. As the firing temperature increased, the crystal phases of monoclinic celsian, zinc aluminate, zinc silicate, calcium titanium silicate and titania appeared. And the increase of firing temperature led to transformation of hexagonal celsian to monoclinic. The only glass frit containing 15wt% PbO had the crystal phase of solid solution of $PbTiO_3-CaTiO_3$. At the frequency of 1 MHz, the dielectric constant of glass frit crystallized was in the range of 11~16 and the dielectric loss less than 0.020. But the glass frit containing 15wt% PbO had the dielectric constant of 17~26 and loss of 0.010~0.015 because of crystal phase of solid solution of $PbTiO_3-CaTiO_3$.
Effects of ${AI_2O_3}/{P_2O_5}$ ratio on the crystallization of a series of glasses with the nominal composition of 41.4wt % $SiO_2$, 35.0wt % CaO, 20.6wt % (${P_2O_5}$+${AI_2O_3}$) and 3.0wt% MgO were investigated with DTA, XRD and SEM. The major crystalline phases are apatite and anorthite. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and the softening point ($T_s$) are shifted to the upper temperature by increasing $AI_2O_3$ content. The temperature of apatite crystallization ($T_{p1}$) is increased by $AI_2O_3$ content, but the tempera¬ture of anorthite crystallization ($T_{p2}$) is not affected significantly. With increased of $AI_2O_3$, the apatite crystallization is decreased, but anorthite crystallization is increased.
