Waste of the hydroponic solution from the plastic film house cultivation was recycled to grow the red pepper(Capsicum annum L.) in upland fields as supplement for plant nutrients and irrigation sources. Application of hydroponic waste solution increased the pH and EC of the soils, coupled with the increases in the concentrations of exchangeable cations(Ca, Mg, and K), total nitrogen, $NH_4-N,\;and\;NO_3-N$. Growth and yield of red pepper were highest when the treatment of chemical fertilizer(70%) was combined with hydroponic waste solution(30%). Amounts of the daily producing hydroponic waste solution were 2,880 L $ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ from the experimental facilities and this could irrigate $409.86m^2$ of area to compensate for the amount of water loss by evapotranspiration(3%). The overall results demonstrated that hydroponic waste solution could be recycled as plant nutrients and irrigation water resources for enhancing soil fertility and environmental quality.
For the use of sea mustard in snack food as the supplement of minerals and nutrients, three types of product like sweet jelly, jam and candy were prepared adding fresh sea mustard homogenates, dried sea mustard powder and sea mustard extract, respectively. That were prepared by four different ways, cold water extract, hot water extract, $1\%$ NaOH extract and $95\%$ ethanol extract. The extract contains plenty of particulary iodine and calcium in hot water extract and other nutrients. Judging by sensory evaluation, color, flavor and taste of jam, sweet jelly and candy added with sea mustard, products were satisfactory to attractive snack food for children and these could be useful as the source of minerals and nutrients.
Protoplast formation and regeneration from wild-type and auxotrophic mutants of Candida pseudotropicalis CBS 607 as well as fusion between complementary mutants were carried out. Frequencies of protoplast formation from wild-type and histidine or adenine requiring mutants ranged from 96 to 100% whereas those from methionine or tryptophan auxotrophs were 52 and 72%, respectively. When bovine serum albumin(4mg/ml, BSA) was added to protoplasting buffer for cells of methionine or tryptophan auxotrophs grown in a medium supplemented with myoinositol(0.5mg/ml), 96-99 % of cells were converted to protoplasts. Protoplasts were regenerated at the frequencies ranging from 18 to 20%. However, the addition of BSA to protoplasting buffer and the supplement of myoinositol to a medium of cell growth doubled the regeneration rate except adenine auxotroph in which such an improvement was not observed. It was found that optimal concentrations of polyethylene glycol and $CaCl_2$ are 20% and 100mM while optimal pH and exposure time are 6.0 and 30min. The fusion frequencies between complementary mutants ranged from $1.5{\times}10^{-3}\;to\;8.8{\times}10^{-3}$ and were enhanced by the improvement in the rate of protoplast regeneration. When histidine auxotroph was fused with tryptophan mutant, several fusion products were obtained which were found to be in the state of aneuploid or diploid, judging from DNA content and the presence of a large nucleus in the products.

The objective of this study was to evaluate a feed additives used mainly in lactating cow diets in transient pregrent cow diets. The study was conducted as a completely randomized design with forty Holstein pregnant cows to determine the effect of feeding Aspergillus oryzae(T2), Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixture(T3) and enzyme(cellulase, xylanase) - releasing chemicals(ERC) (T4) on the dry matter intake, milk yield, milk composition and metabolic disorders. Dry matter intake was similar among treatments for 3 weeks prepartum but cows fed enzyme tended to increased feed intake compared to no additives treatment both in calving day and for 3 weeks postpartum. Cows fed Aspergillus oryzae, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and ERC produced more milk than those fed no additives. However, there is no significant difference among treatments. Concentration of glucose was not significantly different among treatment prepartum but that in plasma of cows fed ERC was higher at calving and 3 weeks postpartum compared to others. Increase in NEFA began at 3 weeks prepartum and accelerate during the final 7 days before calving at all treatments but lower for ERC-treated cows at calving and 3 weeks postpartum. Ca concentration not different among treatment prepartum and postpartum. Corticoid content decreased significantly for cows fed ERC compared to those fed non-additives. Metabolic disorder was not occurred in cows fed ERC. However, ketosis and displased abomasum were happened 1 cow when fed non-additives, metritis 1 cow when fed Aspergillus oryzae and retained placenta 1 cow in all treatments except cows fed ERC.
In this study, the various effects of Salicornia herbacea, including antioxidative function, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory effect, and the effect of sebiparous reduction due to intervention of the DHT hormone were investigated using. The result of this study Based on this analysis, the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and WBC were found to be significantly decreased and SOD, Ca, K, and Zn were shown to be significantly increased significantly in the group that received the SH pill group after trial fora 12 week trials. Testosterone and DHT were increased in the SH pill group, but it was not statistically significant. In the case of the skin condition measurements, the number of blackhead pores, skin oiliness, keratin and, MIC were significantly decreased, and the pH was decreased to normal pH in the SH pill group. Therefore, it was confirmed that overall skin condition was improved due to Salicornia herbacea diet. The results of this research result can contribute so demonstrate the potential of actively using that the Salicornia herbacea can be actively developed as a health supplement, and a medication.

Particulate matter (PM) has emitted in many regions of the world and is causing many health-related problems. Thus reasonable politics and solutions are needed to reduce PM in Seoul. Further it is required to clearly explain the major portions of chemical components contained in $PM_{10}$ to figure out the characteristics of $PM_{10}$, and to develop effective reduction measures in order to decrease the adverse effects of $PM_{10}$. $PM_{10}$ samples were collected in Seoul and analyzed their ions to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of ionic species. Since hydrogen ion ($H^+$) and carbonate ion (${CO_3}^{2-}$)) cannot be analyzed by Ion chromatography (IC), concentrations of $H^+$ and ${CO_3}^{2-}$ were initially estimated by pH and equivalent differences between anions and cations in this study. Starting from the study findings, good combination results for compositional patterns between anions and cations were obtained by applying a mathematical modelling technique that was based on the mass balance principle. The ions in $PM_{10}$ were combined with $H^+$, ${CO_3}^{2-}$, and supplement for $NO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$ formed such compounds $NH_4Cl$, $NH_4NO_3$, $CaSO_4$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, $NaNO_3$, NaCl, $Na_2CO_3$, and $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ in the study area.
This study was performed to determine the effect of brown algae on the egg quality of laying hens fed a non-supplemented diet (Control) and a diet supplemented with 10% Undaria pinnatifida (A), Laminaria religiosa (B), and Hijikia fusiforme (C), respectively. Isa Brown (28 weeks old) were raised for 8 weeks. The darkness, redness, and blueness of the egg yolks increased with the addition of brown algae, expecially Undaria pinnatifida (A). The fucoxanthin contents were observed to be only 21.3-34.8 mg% level in the brown algae but they were nearly traced in the egg yolks. Among the analyzed minerals, the Ca, Fe, K contents increased to 391.2, 6.3, and 450.5 mg%, respectively, but the amount of P was reduced to 110.5 mg%. The total mineral contents were higher in the egg yolk with Hijikia fusiforme (C) (1,155.1 mg%) than with any other supplement. The brown algae diet reduced the saturated fatty acid level from 38.3 to 32.1% but increased the unsaturated fatty acid level from 61.5 to 69.6% owing to the rise of the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The aim of this study was to investigate biological activity and biochemical properties of extracts from Bacillus subtilis-fermented silkworm (Bombyx mori L., SP) powder of different origin (Buan, Namwon, and Boeun). An additional aim was to determine the inhibition of cancer cell (B16-F10, HT-29, LNcaP, and MCF-7) proliferation and nitric oxide (NO) production from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. Biological activities (${\alpha},{\alpha}^{\prime}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl [DPPH], free radical scavenging activity, fibrinolytic activity, antiproliferation activity, and anti-inflammatory activity) and biochemical properties (compositional amino acid contents, and mineral contents) were examined in water extracts from silkworm powder and B. subtilis-fermented silkworm powder. The highest amino acid contents were detected in Buan silkworm powder (BU). After fermented, the highest contents were found in B. subtilis-fermented Buan silkworm powder (BBO). The major minerals detected were K, Ca, and Mg. Rates of these minerals, especially those of Na increased after fermented. DPPH radical scavenging activity and fibrinolytic activity were stronger in the fermented group than non-fermented group. DPPH radical scavenging activity and fibrinolytic activity were highest in the extract from BBO. The inhibition activities of LNcaP and MCF-7 cells viability were significantly decreased in the BBO, and there was no inhibition activity in other cancer cells (B16-F10 and HT-29). An SRB assay of the cell viability of RAW 264.7 cells exposed to extracts of silkworm powder and B. subtilis-fermented silkworm powder revealed no toxicity in any of the groups. Compared with the LPS-treated group, the biggest reduction in NO production was detected in the BBO group. Based on these results, extracts from Boeun silkworm powder fermented with B. subtilis could be a candidate material as a dietary supplement for use in healthy functional foods.
The objective was to evaluate the factors influencing on the growth of children aged 3 - 6 years by mini dietary assessment and anthropometric indices in 556 children and by analyzing mineral contents of hair from 273 children by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The mean concentration of zinc (Zn) in hair was 68.9 $\pm$ 31.1 ppm and the zinc level of 91 % children was less than 60% of the reference value of 180 ppm. The mean content of lead (Pb) in hair was 1.76 $\pm$ 1.20 ppm, but only 67% of 273 children was within the reference value of 2 ppm and the lead level of 33% of children was 2 - 4 times higher than the reference value. The level of Zn was negatively correlated with Pb content (r = -0.305, p 〈 0.01). Hair Zn content, regardless of age, was significantly positively correlated with height (r = 0.214) and body weight (r = 0.159). The height of 95.3% children was belonged to the normal range of 90 - 109.9% of standard value and the body weight of 49.8% children was in the range of 90 - 109.9% of standard value. However, 8.1 % children was overweighted (110 - 119.9% of standard) and 9.4% children was obese (120 - 149.9% of standard) and 0.9% children was severe obese (〉 150%) which resulted in total 10.3% obese. Contrary to our expectation, 32.8% children was underweight (70 - 89.9% of standard) and 36% of the underweight children showed the low content of zinc (10 - 49 ppm) in hair. There was no significant correlation between dietary intake of Zn and hair Zn content. Hair Zn content was low even though children consumed greater than 75% of their requirement for zinc. Regardless of dietary intake of Zn, hair Zn level was rather negatively correlated to the content of Pb in hair. 38.8% children had an unbalanced diet which resulted in lower intake of calorie, Ca, Zn, vitamin B$_2$ compared with those consuming variety of foods. Therefore, it would be needed that new approach for nutrition education to improve eating habit having the unbalanced diet in preschool children. It might be also suggested to develop new food products to complement the nutrients of Zn, Ca, Fe as snacks or dietary supplement for Korean preschool children.

Screening and identification of genetic resources based on their phytoconstituents and morphological characters potentially provide baseline data for researchers, breeders, and nutraceutical companies who wish to formulate a nutrient-dense diet and health beneficial supplement. Thus, we evaluated the amount of total phenolic content and major phenolic compounds; examined if phenolic compounds could be used as distinguishing factors for perilla genetic resources; and investigated the relation between some quantitative and qualitative morphological characters with the contents of phenolic compounds in 360 accessions obtained from National Agrobiodiversity Center gene bank, Jeonju, Korea. Total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric assay. Individual phenolic compounds were determined using an Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography system equipped with Photodiode Array detector. Considerable variations were observed in TPC (7.99 to 117.47 mg GAE/g DE), rosmarinic acid (RA) (ND to 19.19 mg/g DE), caffeic acid (CA) (ND to 0.72 mg/g DE), apigenin-7-O-diglucuronide (ADG) (ND to 1.24 mg luteolin equivalent (LUE)/g DE), scutellarein-7-O-glucuronide (SG) (ND to 4.32 mg LUE/g DE), and apigenin-7-O-glucuronide (AG) (ND to 1.60 mg LUE/g DE). RA was the most dominant phenolic compound in most accessions (95.3%) followed by SG. The adaxial leaf color was light green, green and dark green in 13.8%, 65.0%, and 21.1 % of the accessions, respectively. 78.8% of the accessions had light green color at the abaxial side with the remaining being described as green. Most of the accessions (96.9%) were cordate shape, the remaining being eclipse. Intensities of green pigment at abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces were correlated with contents of individual phenolic compounds and TPC whereas leaf length and width had no correlation with TPC, CA and RA, and negatively correlated with ADG, AG, and SG. Leaf shape was not related with content of phenolic compounds, color of leaves, or the length or width of leaves. Accessions IT57426, IT157434, IT267710, and IT267712 which contained relatively high contents of TPC and major phenolic compounds (RA and SG) could be used for further research in breeding and bioassay test. Our study result showed the contents of total phenolics and individual phenolic compounds along with the morphological characters could be useful distinguishing factors for perilla genetic resources.
