  • PURPOSES: The scaling of a concrete surface caused by the combined effects of frost and de-icing salts is one of the main reasons for the need to repair transportation infrastructures in cold-climate regions. This study describes the results of attempts to determine the scaling resistance of concrete incorporating mineral admixtures such as fly ash, GGBFS, and silica fume, and subjected to the actions of frost and salt. METHODS : Conventionally, to evaluate the fundamental properties of concrete, flexural and compressive strength measurements are regularly performed. Based on the ASTM C 672 standard, concrete is subjected to 2%, 4%, and 8% $CaCl_2$ salt solutions along with repeated sets of 50 freeze/thaw cycles, and the scaling resistance was evaluated based on the mass of the scale and a visual examination. RESULTS : It was observed that silica fume is very effective in enhancing the scaling resistance of concrete. Meanwhile, concrete incorporating GGBFS exhibited poor resistance to scaling, especially in the first ten freeze/thaw cycles. However, fly ash concrete generally exhibited the maximum amount of damage as a result of the frost-salt attack, regardless of the concentrations of the solutions. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the scaling resistance of concrete is highly dependent on the type of the mineral admixture used in the concrete. Therefore, to provide a durable concrete pavement for use in cold-climate regions, the selection of a suitable binder is essential.

  • Silver species other than the silver ion were formed by UV irradiation on polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver salts and their effect on complexation behavior between the silver and olefin was investigated through the separation performance of olefin/paraffin mixtures. The ideal propylene/propane separation factor reached 350 and the separation coefficient was ca.15 due to the high loading amount of silver ions into poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (POZ) without UV irradiation. On UV irradiation either in air or under nitrogen, the silver-POZ membranes became yellow-brown initially due to the formation of colloidal silver particles, and finally black and metal-like luster. Even when Ag$^{+}$ was converted, to some extent, to Ag$^{\circ}$ by UV irradiation in air at the early stage, the separation coefficient of olefin/paraffin mixtures was maintained. This suggests that silver species other than the silver ion is active for olefin carrier for facilitated transport. Meanwhile the steady decrease of the separation coefficient was observed in the silver/POZ membranes irradiated under $N_2$. It is suggested that the reduction of silver ions in POZ goes through a different photoreduction mechanism with UV irradiation depending on the environment.t.

  • Three kinds of soybean curd were prepared with three coagulants such as calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and glucono delta lactone. The mineral contents of the three soybean curds were analyzed before soaking and after various lengths of soaking(1/2 hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 2 hours(water changed after 1/2 hour)). Results therefrom were as follows: 1. Before the three soybean cured were soaked, their moisture contents were 79-83g/%. The ash contents were 5.04g% in the soybean curd made with CaCl_{2}4.42g/% in the soybean curd prepared with MgCl_{2} and 3.86g/% in the soybean curd coagulated by glucono delta lactone. an analysis of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous contents showed that each element had a greater concentration in the soybean curds made with divalent mineral salts than in the soybean curd made with acid. 2. Changes taking place in the mineral contents of the soybean curds according to different soaking times were examined. The mineral contents tended to decease in process of soaking time. The soybean curds showed the highest rate of mineral dissolution after one hour of soaking, and then they tended to reabsorb minerals. When the soybean curds were soaked I freshly changed water for one hour and 30 minutes, their mineral contents indicated a greater diminishing trend but no significant difference was noticed among the different kinds of soybean curd. In case coagulant has been used excessively, it is necessary to soak the bean curds for about one hour to get the coagulant dissolved.

  • Effect of volcanic ash on cell growth of Aspergillus sp. and production of exopolymers by Agrobacterium sp. and Aureobasidium pullualns was investigated. The volcanic ash contained various mineral salts such as $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $K_2O$. Maximal cell growth of Aspergillus sp. was obtained when 0.3% volcanic ash was added to medium. Cell growth of Aspergillus sp. increased with higher concentration of volcanic ash in medium. Amount of cell growth with 0.3 % volcanic ash was 6.7 times higher than that without volcanic ash. Volcanic ash also stimulated production of exopolymer as well as cell growth. Production of curdlan with 0.1% volcanic ash was 12.40 g/l whereas that without volcanic ash was 9.15 g/l. Production of pullulan with volcanic ash was also higher than that without volcanic ash.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of milk as one of the environmental friendly materials that substitute chemical fungicides for control powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca aphanis) of strawberries $(Fragaria{\times}ananassa\;Duch.)$. 'Maehyang' and 'Akihime' varieties planted in greenhouses were evaluated for the control of powdery mildew. Applications of $5\%,\;10\%\;and\;20\%$ milk had much better effects on controlling powdery mildew. In particular, $10\%$ milk showed a higher efficacy than other concentrations applied onto strawberry in greenhouse experiments. Foliar spray application of $10\%$ milk was effective for powdery mildew, whereas drench application was not. Also, foliar spray of $10\%$ milk was able to accelerate more firmness and calcium contents of strawberry fruits than the non-treated. The $10\%$ milk applied with fertilizer salts $(Ca(H_2PO_4)_2-H_2O\;and KH_2PO_4)$ showed there was a similar efficacy to $10\%$ milk alone in greenhouse experiments. White crystals and cracks on strawberry fruits appeared by $20\%$ milk. This result indicated that $10\%$ milk was a useful substitute for fungicides to control powdery mildew of strawberry.

  • Groundwater chemistry in Namwon area, Korea, was investigated to understand the contribution of geochemical processes on groundwater chemistry. For this study, a total of 279 groundwater samples were collected from 93 wells distributed over the study area. Higher concentrations of major ions are generally encountered in the shallow alluvial wells, suggesting that these chemicals are originated from the surface contamination sources. Mass balance analysis based on reaction stoichiometry reveals that the water chemistry is regulated by three major chemical processes: weathering of silicate/ carbonate minerals, input of C1/SO$_4$ salts, and nitrate generating processes. The results show that mineral weathering is the most dominating factor regulating the groundwater chemistry. However, the groundwaters with the higher salt concentration indicate the larger mineral weathering effect, suggesting that some part of the mineral weathering effect is also associated with the anthropogenic activities such as limes applied to the cultivated lands, carbonates (CaCO$_3$) in the cement materials.

  • This study was conducted to develop new lines expressing the characteristic of early flowering by introducing MdMADS2 gene in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitamura) ‘Zinba'. Transformation of chrysanthemum was conducted by Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404 harboring the binary vector containing MdMADS2 controlled by double CaMV 35S promoters. Ninety three shoots were regenerated from 1,463 leaf segment explants cultured on the first selection medium (MS basal salts + 1.0 mg/L BA + 0.5 mg/L IAA + 10 mg/L kanamycin + 400 mg/L cefotaxime, pH 5.8) after co-cultivation, and 20 out of the 93 shoots rooted on the second selection medium containing 20 mg/L kanamycin and 400 mg/L cefotaxime. Many escapes (98.6%) were removed on the selection stage for rooting. Nineteen lines were confirmed as transgenic plant with transgene by PCR analysis. Six transgenic plants flowered 2-11 days earlier than non-transgenic plant without big change of phenotype, and especially, 3 (Mo-7, Mo-11, Mo-17) out of 6 transgenic lines showed a significant reduction in days to flowering compared to non-transgenic plant. Introduction and expression of MdMADS2 gene in them were confirmed by Southern and real-time PCR analyses, respectively.

  • An ICP-AES method for determination of calcium content and dissolution characteristics of oyster shell (Ostrea gigas) has been developed and validated. Total calcium content in oyster shell was determined using ICPAES. The dissolution characteristics, which would reflect the composition of $CaCO_3$ polymorphs and calcium salts in oyster shell, were also evaluated by dissolution test. The total calcium contents ranged from 31.8 to 39.9% and the dissolution ratios varied from 62.7 to 83.6% (n=15). The determination of calcium content and dissolution characteristics by ICP-AES would provide useful information for the quality control of oyster shell.
