  • The purpose of this study is to grasp the actual wearing conditions, inconvenience and problems with cycle wear. To attain this purpose, a questionnaire was completed by direct observation and by interviewing bicyclists. The questionnaire was given to 273 bicyclists. The questionnaire consisted of items that are related to concerns with dressing appropriately and enhancement of physical performance through dress. Following are the results of this study. According to the survey, many of them purchased imported cycle wear rather than national cycle wear, and the satisfaction according with purchase rate was low. Bicyclists were uneasy with finding right size cycle wear especially for women. It turned out that the area of the knee and elbow are mostly the areas that they get hurt while riding. Even though the knee and elbow are the mostly hurt area, bicyclists do not prefer to wear appropriate protector for the knee and elbow to excel in their performance in cycling. In material related questions, lower dissatisfaction was indicated for the lints caused by fraction. Average satisfaction was indicated for the distortion after washing, changes in color, touch of the fabric, matters with static and sweat. With regard to the areas where the bicyclists felt discomfort was highly indicated with lower-body clothing. Discomfort was highly indicated with crotch area when riding long period of time. Also when riding a cycle, discomfort was indicated with the leggings cuffs when it comes upward with riding motion. Most of the bicyclists felt the tight fitting leggings were embarrassing.

  • In this study, we investigated a life cycle assessment (LCA) of six roof-waterproofing systems [asphalt (C1), synthetic polymer-based sheet (C2), improved asphalt (C3), liquid applied membrane (C4), Metal sheet with asphalt sheet (N1), and liquid applied membrane with asphalt sheet (N2)]for reinforced concrete building using an architectural model. To acquire accurate and realistic LCA results, minimum units of material compositions for life cycle inventory and real data for compositions of waterproofing materials were used. Considering only materials and energy demands for waterproofing systems per square meter, higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions could be generated in the order of C1 > N2 > C4 > N1 > C2 > C3 during construction phase. However, the order was changed to C1 > C4 > C3 > N2 > N1 > C2, when the actual architecture model was applied to the roof based on each specifications. When an entire life cycle including construction, maintenance, and deconstruction were considered, the amount of GHG emission was in the order of C4 > C1 > C3 > N2 > C2 > N1. Consequently, N1 was the most environmental-friendly waterproofing system producing the lowest GHG emission. GHG emissions from maintenance phase accounted for 71.4%~78.3% among whole life cycle.

  • Gas turbine compressor blades used in a combined cycle power plant are possibly damaged and fractured during their operation. There are two possible causes of the failure of compressor blades; one is a defect of material quality which can be detected through some microscopic inspections for the fracture section, the other is high cycle fatigue problem caused by vibration and can be diagnosed by carrying out dynamic characteristics analysis for the blades. In this paper, in order to determine the cause of the failure of compressor blades in a combined cycle power plant, examination of the fracture section and the propagation mechanism of the crack via stress analysis are performed. Dynamic characteristics analysis via FRF estimation is also performed to identify the cause of failure.

  • Carbon-manganese steel A42 (French standards) is used in steam generator pipes of nuclear center and subject to low cycle fatigue (LCF) loads. In order to obtain the material LCF behavior, the tests are implemented in a hydraulic fatigue machine. The LCF plastic deformation and cyclic stress in macroscope have been influenced by the accumulated low cycle fatigue damage. The constitutive kinematic and isotropic hardening modeling is modified with coupling fatigue damage to describe the fatigue behavior. The improved model seems to be good agreement with the test results.

  • Recent activities on the scramjet and rocket-ramjet combined-cycle engine of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) are herein presented. The scramjet engines and combined-cycle engines have been studied in the world and JAXA has also studied such the engines experimentally, numerically and conceptually. Based on the studies, 2 to 3 m long, hydrogen-fueled engine models were designed and tested at the Ramjet Engine Test Facility(RJTF) and the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel(HIEST). A scramjet engine model was tested in Mach 10 to 14 flight condition at HIEST. A 3 m long scramjet engine model was designed to reduce a dissociation energy loss in a high temperature condition. Drag reduction by a tangential injection and two ways of a transverse fuel injection were examined. Combustor model tests at three operating modes of the combined-cycle engine were conducted, demonstrating the combustor operation and producing data for the engine design at each mode. Aerodynamic engine model tests were conducted in a transonic wind tunnel, demonstrating the engine operation in the ejector-jet mode. A 3 m long combined-cycle engine model has been tested in the ejector-jet mode and the ramjet mode since March 2007. Carbon composite material was examined for application to the engines. Production of the cooling channel on a nickel alloy plate succeeded by the electro-chemical etching.

  • High temperature sodium/sulfur battery(Na/S battery) has good electrochemical properties, but, the battery has some problems such as explosion and corrosion at al. because of using the liquid electrodes at high temperature and production of high corrosion. Room temperature sodium/sulfur batteries (NAS batteries) is developed to resolve of the battery problem. To recently, room temperature sodium/sulfur batteries has higher discharge capacity than its of lithium ion battery, however, cycle life of the battery is shorter. Because, the sulfur electrode and electrolyte have some problem such as polysulfide resolution in electrolyte and reaction of anode material and polysulfide. Cycle life of the battery is improved by decrease of polysulfide resolution in electrolyte and block of reaction between anode material and polysulfide. If room temperature sodium/sulfur batteries (NAS batteries) with low cost and high capacity improves cycle life, the batteries will be commercialized batteries for electric storage, electric vehicle, and mobile electric items.

  • SnCo alloy powder prepared by high energy ball milling is examined as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. As the ball-milling time increased, the crystallinity of SnCo decreased. XRD and TEM SADP showed that nanocrystalline and amorphous phase coexisted after 16 h ball-milling. As the crystallinity decreased, the cycleability increased. At first cycle, there are 4 plateau potentials. The observation of voltage plateau at about 0.68 V confirms the formation of Sn-Li alloy and Co metal. It is considered that The plateau potentials below 0.68 V were reaction between Li and Sn. The change of chemical diffusion coefficient showed that the structure of SnCo alloy abruptly changed at first cycle, and maintained after 2nd cycle.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the main characteristics of the environment-friendly design expressed in Koran fashion. Environment-friendly design can be categorized into choice of material, extension of products life cycle, and recycling design. In this study, Korean fashion designers can be found having the conciousness of environment for fashion design since 1990. First, in choice of material, the designers used Natural fibers which are cotton, linen, wool, and etc, and used natural dyes. Some of the designers have moved from using real fur to using fake fur for animal welfare. But fake furs produced from synthetic or regenerated fibers have the environmental problems during textile production processes. Some of the designers used fake leather made from the skins of an edible fish which are otherwise going to waste. Secondly, Design for extension of products life cycle can economize the resources and energy. Design for extension of products life cycle are classified into reversible clothing, many function clothing, modular style, patina clothing, simple style, and layered look. Finally, recycling design are classified into recycling of daily necessaries and expression techniques of recycling design which are designer's works used patchwork, mash techniques, and handmade of knits or buttonhole stitch.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences on mechanical properties of two-stroke cycle motor pistons manufactured by casting, conventional forging and powder forging, through the comparison of characteristics, merits and disadvantages of each forming technology. For each forming technology, the optimal process parameters were determined through the experiments for several conditions, and microstructure, hardness, tensile strength and elongation of pistons are compared and analyzed. In conventional forging process, material temperature was $460^{\circ}C$ and the die temperature was $210^{\circ}C$ for the Al 4032. The optimal condition was found as solution treatment under $520^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, quenching with $23^{\circ}C$ water, and aging under $190^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. In powder forging process, the proper composition of material was determined and optimal sintering conditions were examined. From the experiment, 1.5% of Si contents on the total weight, $580^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature, and 25 minutes of sintering time were determined as the optimal process condition. For the optimal condition, the pistons had 76.4~78.3 [HRB] of hardness, and 500 [MPa] of tensile strength after T6 heat treatment.

  • Clean Technology goes beyond Clean-UP (or "End of PiPe) Technologies to include Pollution prevention, waste minimisation, and cleaner production. However, the concept of Clean Technology goes deeper than changes in technology, to ways in which human needs can be satisfied sustainably. In other words, Clean Technology, concentrates on delivering a human benefit rather than making a product. Introducing cleaner technology may therefore involve new commercial relationships as well as new technological practices. In some economic sectors, this involves leasing or providing a service rather than selling a product. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an important tool in Clean Technology. LCA involves determining all the resources used and all the wastes and emissions produced in providing the human benefit. Use of LCA ensures that improved environmental performance in one part of the Life Cycle is not achieved merely at the expense of more environmental damage elsewhere. Going beyond LCA, the concepts of Life Cycle Design and "metabolised" use of materials are approaches to obtain maximum benefit from materials as they pass through the human economy. "Closed-loop" use can be a component of clean technology. Looking beyond simple re-use and recycling, a material may pass through a "cascade of uses". typically a series of applications with progressively lower performance specifications. Closed-loop use necessarily involves a change in commercial practice, because the material or product must be recovered after use.
