  • The aim of this present study was to investigate the antifungal effect of tanshinones isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza against Candida ablicans, a polymorphic fungus. For the work, tanshinone IIA (TSN), cryptotanshinone (CTS), and dihydrotanshinone I (DTS) were chosen. Initially, their antifungal effect was analyzed by in-vitro susceptibility test. Data from the susceptibility test showed that while all of these three compounds had antifungal activity, DTS was the most potent. At $100{\mu}g$ DTS/ml, there was about 80% CFU (colony forming unit) reduction as compared to DTS-untreated C. albicans yeast cells (P<0.05). Thus, DTS was selected to determine its antifungal activity in a murine model of disseminated candidiasis due to C. albicans. Results showed that DTS enhanced resistance of mice against disseminated candidiasis. During the entire period of 30-day observation, 60% of DTS-given mice groups survived whereas control animals all died within 14 days (P<0.05). Moreover, DTS inhibited the hyphal production, one of the virulence factors of this fungus, from the blastoconidial form of the fungus. Therefore, the tanshinone appears to have antifungal activity specific for C. albicans infection, which could possibly be mediated by the blockage of hyphal production.

  • This paper introduces a test bed for communication protocol schemes of underwater acoustic sensor network, and also shows experimental results obtained from the test bed. As a testing protocol, carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is evaluated on underwater acoustic channel. A sensor node is equipped with a DSP control board of ATmega2560 and a commercial underwater modem produced by Benthos. The control board not only manipulates a GPS signal to acquire the information of location and time, but also controls the underwater modem to operate according to the procedure designed for a given testing protocol. Whenever any event takes place such as exchanging control/data packets between underwater modems and acquiring location and timing information, each sensor node reports them through radio frequency (RF) air interface to a central station located on the ground. The four kinds of packets for CSMA/CA, RTS(Request To Send), CTS(Clear to Send), DATA, ACK(Acknowledgement) are designed according to the underwater communication environment and are analyzed through the lake experiment from the point of feasibility of CSMA/CA in underwater acoustic communications.

  • Objectives : This study is to report the effect of Korean medical treatment on a patient suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurred in pregnancy and worsened after birth. Methods : We treated the patient diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome by Korean medical treatment such as acupuncture, pharmacopuncture and herbal medicine at ⃝⃝Hospital of Korean Medicine from July 31th 2015 to August 6th 2015. And we evaluated changes of symptoms by Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Tinel sign, Phalen’s test, and Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging (DITI). Results : 1. Through Korean medical treatment, postpartum carpal tunnel syndrome was significantly improved. VAS was decreased from 4 to 2, Phalen’s test was manifested from 10 seconds to 26 seconds and Tinel sign was changed from positive to negative. 2. We compared the gap of temperature between palm and forearm before and after Korean medical treatment through DITI. The temperature on the right side was changed from 0.74℃ to 1.01℃ and the left one from 0.63℃ to 1.01℃. Conclusions : This case report shows that Korean medical treatment is useful to treat pregnancy-related carpal tunnel syndrome worsened after birth.

  • A new SRCF (Steel Reinforced Concrete Frame) external connection method for seismic strengthening of medium-and low-rise reinforced concrete buildings is reported in this paper. The SRCF method, proposed in this study, is capable of carrying out the seismic retrofitting construction while residents can live inside building. The method is one of the strength design approach by retrofit which can easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of concrete buildings controlled by shear. The pseudo-dynamic test, designed using a existing school building in Korea, was carried out in order to verify the seismic strengthening effects of the proposed method in terms of the maximum load carrying capacity and deformation. Test results revealed that the proposed SRCF strengthening method installed in RC frame enhanced conspicuously the strength and deformation capacities, and the method can resist markedly under the large scaled earthquake intensity level.

  • During a fault the remanent flux in a current transformer (CT) may cause severe saturation of its core. The resulting distortion in the secondary current could cause the mal-operation of a protection relay. This paper proposes an algorithm for compensating for the errors in the secondary current caused by CT saturation and the remanent flux. The algorithm compensates the distorted current irrespective of the level of the remanent flux. The second-difference function of the current is used to detect when the CT first starts to saturate. The negative value of the second-difference function at the start of saturation, which corresponds to the magnetizing current, is inserted into the magnetization curve to obtain the core flux at the instant. This value is then used as an initial flux to calculate the actual flux of the CT during the course of the fault with the secondary current. The magnetizing current is then estimated using the magnetization curve and the calculated flux value. The compensated secondary current can be estimated by adding the magnetizing current to the secondary current. Test results indicate that the algorithm can accurately compensate a severely distorted secondary current signal.

  • In this study, the effect of mode II by variation of multilevel loading direction was experimentally investigated in the fatigue crack propagation behavior. To generate mixed-mode I+II loading state, the compact tension shear(CTS) specimen and loading device were used in this tests. The experimental method divided into three steps and three cases that were step I(0$^{\circ}$), step II(30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$),step III(0$^{\circ}$) and case I(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 30$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$), case II(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 60$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$), case III(0$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 90$^{\circ}$ ⇒ 0$^{\circ}$). The result of test, the step II affected to the step III in the all case. Specially, The fatigue crack propagation rate was faster and the fatigue life was smaller than of mixed mode I+II(30$^{\circ}$,60$^{\circ}$) due to the effect of mode II in the step III of the case III

  • This paper proposes a compensation method for an air gapped current transformer (CT) in the steady state. An air gapped CT is used in order to reduce a remanent flux in the case of auto-reclosure. It causes larger ratio and angle errors than the closed core CT because the magnetizing inductance of an air-gapped CT is even smaller than the closed-core CT. The core flux is calculated and used to estimate the exciting current in accordance with the hysteresis curve of the air-gapped CT The correct current is obtained by adding the estimated exciting current to the measured secondary current. The performance of the method was investigated for the air gapped CTs with a gap of 0.083mm and 0.249mm for the 120%, 100% and 20% of the rated current. Various test results indicate that the proposed compensation algorithm can improves the accuracy significantly.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in dating violence perception of dating violence perception of university students. As a research tool, CTS2 was used as a measure of dating violence, a measure developed by Kim(1999) was used, and a measure of dating violence by Jeong(2013) was used. Data analysis was performed using independent sample t-test and multi-variate analyses. The results are summarized as follows. First, female students showed higher differences in total violence against violence and psychological violence than boys, while boys showed higher physical violence than girls. Health majors were significantly higher in total dating violence and psychological violence than students in humanities and social sciences. There was no significant difference in dating violence offenses with or without sexual experience. Only psychological violence showed an interaction effect between gender and sex experience. Second, female students were significantly higher than male students with significant differences in recognition and sub-factors. Health majors were significantly higher in both date violence perception and lower factors than humanities and social sciences. Students without sexual experience perceived overall dating violence more than students with sexual, physical and cyber violence being significantly higher.
