  • A naso-orbito-ethmoid(NOE) fracture is very complex diagnostically and therapeutically. The diagnosis of this fractures is usually made by physical findings aided by a CT scan. The primary treatment of NOE fracture must be directed toward the reconstruction of medial canthal ligament and bony skeleton. We prefer to correct lacrimal system abnormalities secondarily A 32-year old male patient visited emergency room of our hospital with NOE fracture. After emergency treatment and consultation with neurosurgery and ophthalmology, we treated this patient by performing reconstruction of medial canthal ligament, bone graft of media orbital rim blowout fracture, and dorsal nasal cantilever bone graft with calvarial bone. The authors present a case report with literature review.

  • For the first time, airflow in the nasal cavity of a normal Korean adult is investigated experimentally by PIV measurement. Nasal airflow can be subdivided into two interrelated categories; nasal airflow resistance and heat and mass transfer between the air stream and the walls of the nasal cavity. In this study, thanks to a new method for the model casting by a combination of the rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone. a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity can be made fur PIV experiments. The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Average and RMS distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. Data fer the airflow at the end of meatuses are obtained for the first time. Comparisons between western and Korean nasal airflows are appreciated. Due to the difference in geometry of the frontal part of nasal cavity, the flow near nares shows the difference.

  • Fullerenes, $C_{60}$ and $C_{70}$, display interesting physicochemical properties in solutions, especially due to their unique chemical structures and their good electron accepting abilities. Solubility of fullerenes in different organic solvents and their unusual solvatochromic behavior, the ability of the fullerenes to form aggregates in solutions, and their electron transfer and charge transfer interactions with variety of electron donors, are the subjects of extensive research activities for more than one decade. Many research groups including ours have contributed substantially in the understanding of the solvatochromism, aggregation behavior, and the photoinduced electron transfer and charge transfer chemistry of fullerenes, in condensed phase. Present article is aimed to summarize the important results reported on the above aspects of fullerenes, subsequent to the earlier report from our group (D.K. Palit and J.P. Mittal, Full. Sci. & Tech. 3, 1995, 643-659).)., 643-659)..

  • Diagnosis of maxillofacial lesions is very difficult. Recent developments in computed tomography enable the production of three dimnesional images of complex anatomical structures from a series of conventional computed tomographic sections. Methods of three-dimensional analysis of computed tomographic images have recently been described. Mostly, reports have concentrated on applications relative to congenital deformities. In this report, one method of three dimensional reformatting is reviwes. Images formed by this method have solid surface appearance and can be color enhanced and manipulated to isolate anatomic structures of interest. The program allows tissue densitis, volumes, and distances. This report emphasizes maxillofacial applications other than those previously reported in the surgical and radiological literature.

  • De novo variants (DNVs) can arise during parental germ cell formation, fertilization, and the processes of embryogenesis. It is estimated that each individual carries 60-100 such spontaneous variants in the genome, most of them benign. However, a number of recent studies suggested that DNVs contribute to the pathogenesis of a variety of human diseases. Applications of DNVs include aiding in clinical diagnosis and identifying disease-causing genetic factors in patients with atypical symptoms. Therefore, understanding the roles of DNVs in a trio, with healthy parents and an affected offspring, would be crucial in elucidating the genetic mechanism of disease pathogenesis in a personalized manner.

  • As distinct from a slender body, the separation of the boundary layer on a bluff body give rise to complex wakes in which various kinds of vortices form, develop and interact with each other. In this paper, we investigate cavitation wake field behind wedge shaped two-dimensional fin models. Eight different models are tested at the Chungnam National University Cavitation Tunnel (CNU-CT). First, we measure wake cavity shapes and compare with numerical results, which shows the good agreement with each other. In addition, we demonstrate that wake flow characteristics of the control fin are clearly identified by the correlation analysis of high-speed camera images and pressure fluctuation measurements.

  • A Femur is the longest and largest bone which supports body in human musculoskeletal structure. Therefore, it may cause heavy loss of blood when it is suffered by a simple or complex fracture, and the complication is very dangerous with a possibility of severe tissue damage. In this study, the femoral cancellous angle change is estimated in order to design the Korean femoral IM nail. Generally, it is various in the size and curvature of femoral cancellous bone depending on patient's body dimension. Therefore surgeon has difficulty in fitting this femoral IM nail to the patient in the surgical procedure. In our study, we tries to estimate femoral lateral curve angle with more precise method based on CT image of the femur and utilize this information on the design of femoral IM nail for Korean patients.
