  • This paper proposes a distributed MAC protocol called Carrier Sensing Multiple Access with Collision Resolution (CSMA/CR) considering fully-connected single hop network environments for next-generation wireless LAN with high density of stations. The proposed CSMA/CR is compatible with the conventional MAC protocols by observing the operation of CSMA/CA and is able to detect a collision promptly without RTS/CTS exchange by applying the technique of CSMA/CD to wireless environments. Moreover, once a collision is detected, the dedicated resource is allocated to the next transmission and so the collision that may occur again is resolved. We investigate some implementation issues for the practicality of CSMA/CR and compare it with the typical distributed MAC protocols. The simulation results show that the proposed CSMA/CR has a low overhead as detecting a collision without the RTS/CTS exploitation and achieves always the best throughput regardless of the number of access stations, by using the reservation-based collision resolution technique.

  • Recently dense wireless local area networks (WLANs) emerge as the number of WLAN cells and stations increases. In such dense WLAN environment, this paper proposes a new distributed medium access control (MAC) protocol. The proposed MAC protocol extends the previous CSMA with collision resolution (CSMA/CR) that uses a single collision detection (CD) phase and employs multiple CD phases to resolve more collisions. It checks the collision detection in each CD phase and stops the CD phase if consecutive non-detected CD phases occur more than the threshold. Therefore, the proposed protocol can control the number of CD phases adaptively according to the number of accessing stations and increase the probability of collision resolution while decreasing the packet overhead. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive CSMA/CR protocol employs a variable number of CD phases according to the number of stations and achieves a greater throughput than the previous CSMA/CR protocol using the fixed number of CD phases.

  • Random access protocols feature inherent sensing functionality and distributed coordination, making them suitable for cognitive radio communication environments, where secondary users must detect the white space of the primary spectrum and utilize the idle primary spectrum efficiently without centralized control. These characteristics have led to the adoption of carrier-sensing-multiple-access/collision-avoidance (CSMA/CA) in cognitive radio. This paper proposes a new analytical framework for evaluating the performance of a CSMA/CA protocol that considers the characteristics of idle periods based on the primary traffic behavior in cognitive radio systems. In particular, the CSMA/CA-based secondary network was analyzed in the terms of idle period utilization, which is the average effective data transmission time portion in an idle period. The use of the idle period was maximized by taking its statistical features into consideration.

  • Real-time monitoring is one of the prime necessities in a weapon flight test that is required for the efficient and timely collection of large amounts of high-rate sampled data acquired by an event-trigger. The wireless sensor network is a good candidate to resolve this requirement, especially considering the inhospitable environment of a weapon flight test. In this paper, we propose a priority based multi-channel MAC protocol with CSMA/CA over a single radio for a real-time monitoring of a weapon flight test. Multi-channel transmissions of nodes can improve the network performance in wireless sensor networks. Our proposed MAC protocol has two operation modes: Normal mode and Priority Mode. In the normal mode, the node exploits the normal CSMA/CA mechanism. In the priority mode, the node has one of three grades - Class A, B, and C. The node uses a different CSMA/CA mechanism according to its grade that is determined by a signal level. High grade nodes can exploit more channels and lower backoff exponents than low ones, which allow high grade nodes to obtain more transmission opportunities. In addition, it can guarantee successful transmission of important data generated by high grade nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed MAC exhibits excellent performance in an event-triggered real-time application.

  • A basic access method about IEEE 802.11 MAC layer protocol using IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs is the DCF thatis based on the CSMA/CA. But, cause of IEEE 802.11 MAC layer uses original backoff algorithm (exponential backoff method), when collision occurred, the size of contention windows increases the double size Also, a time of packet transmission delay increases and efficienty is decreased by original backoff scheme. In this paper, we have analyzed TCP packet transmission time of IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF protocol for wireless LANs a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm. It is considered the transmission time of transmission control protocol (TCP) packet on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in additive white gaussian noise (A WGN) and Rician fading channel. From the results, a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm produces a better performance improvement than an original backoff in wireless LAN environment. Also, in OFDM/quadrature phase shift keying channel (QPSK), we can achieve that the transmission time in wireless channel decreases as the TCP packet size increases and based on the data collected, we can infer the correlation between packet size and the transmission time, allowing for an inference of the optimal packet size in the TCP layer.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a CSMA/CA protocol to reduce the delay time and increase the throughput of the original CSMA/CA protocol. In underwater environments, the efficiency of the protocol is reduced due to the increase of the propagation delay time, which results in increase of the collision possibility causing lowering of the transmission efficiency.
