  • We have synthesized a $CaMgSi_2O_6:Eu^{2+}$ blue phosphor via a solid-state reaction method. The $CaMgSi_2O_6:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor has monoclinic structure with a space group of C2/c (15), and an emission band peaking at 450 nm (blue) due to the $4f^7-4f^65d$ transition of the $Eu^{2+}ion$. The emission intensity at $100^{\circ}C$ is 54% of the value at room temperature. A white LED was fabricated by integrating a UV LED (400 nm) with our blue phosphor plus two commercial green and red phosphors. The white LED shows a color temperature of 3500 K with a color rendering index of 87 (x = 0.3936, y = 0.3605), and a luminous efficiency of 18 lm/W. The white LED shows a luminance maintenance of 97% after operation at 350 mA for 400 hours at $85^{\circ}C$.

  • Green phosphors $(Zn_{1-a-b}M_aM^{\prime}_b)_xGa_yS_{x+3y/2}:Eu^{2+}$ (M, M' = alkali earth ions) with x = 2 and y = 2-5 were prepared, starting from ZnO, MgO, $SrCO_3$, $Ga_2O_3$, $Eu_2O_3$, and S with a flux $NH_4F$ using a conventional solidstate reaction. A phosphor with the composition of $(Zn_{0.6}Sr_{0.3}Mg_{0.1})_2Ga_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$ produced the strongest luminescence at a 460-nm excitation. The observed XRD patterns indicated that the optimized phosphor consisted of two components: zinc thiogallate and zinc sulfide. The characteristic green luminescence of the $ZnS:Eu^{2+}$ component on excitation at 460 nm was attributed to the donor-acceptor ($D_{ZnGa_2S_4}-A_{ZnS}$) recombination in the hybrid boundary. The optimized green phosphor converted 17.9% of the absorbed blue light into luminescence. For the fabrication of light-emitting diode (LED), the optimized phosphor was coated with MgO using magnesium nitrate to overcome their weakness against moisture. The MgO-coated green phosphor was fabricated with a blue GaN LED, and the chromaticity index of the phosphor-cast LED (pc-LED) was investigated as a function of the wt % of the optimized phosphor. White LEDs were fabricated by pasting the optimized green (G) and the red (R) phosphors, and the commercial yellow (Y) phosphor on the blue chips. The three-band pc-WLED resulted in improved color rendering index (CRI) and corrected color temperature (CCT), compared with those of the two-band pc-WLED.

  • This paper dealt with a retrofit high power LED searchlight to replace conventional 1kW halogen searchlights. The design specification meets KDS 6230-1046-1 and KS V 8469. An optical lens with the beam angle of $6^{\circ}$ was used to meet the luminous intensity of 800,000cd at $0^{\circ}$ in horizontal line. Heat dissipation of the LED searchlight adopted a free air cooling type which does not use a fan or a heat-pipe. From the test results, power consumption of the prototype LED searchlight was 148W which was saved by 85% comparing a halogen searchlight of 1kW. Luminous intensity was 945,000cd at $0^{\circ}$ in horizontal line, satisfying KS V 8469. Luminous efficacy was improved by 4.7 times higher than that of the halogen searchlights. Beam angle, color temperature, and color rendering index(CRI) was $5.4^{\circ}$, 5,500K, and 70, respectively. Surface temperature of the LED searchlight was below $60^{\circ}C$ and surrounding temperature of the SMPS installed inside was below $50^{\circ}C$ which were satisfied with the IEC 60092-306.
