  • HVS based transform coding techniques for still images take the lowest spatial frequency and luminance contrast sensitivity as the most crucial factors in determining the image quality perceived by human eye. Only the frequency weighting has been main issue. The proposed Weighted Discrete Cosine Transform (WDCT) has the lowest frequency of about 4 [cyc/deg] in 8$\times$8 subblock with the contrast-weighted DC coefficient. The error criteria have been rederived to adapt the contrast weighting for performance evaluation. The proposed scheme has produced higher quality images compared to the unweighted and other schemes.

  • We have developed a system that measures the visual contrast of people of various ages (from teens to those in their 70s) when they look at different color patterns. We have applied this system to Web-safe colors (216 colors), and have developed an age-related visual contrast checker that can be used to quickly determine whether a color pattern consisting of any two colors is easy to see.

  • This paper presents a novel contrast enhance algorithm for images displayed with bright environment light. This algorithm is designed to preserve local contrast based on the luminance ratio of the pixel to its local surround in attention. This algorithm improves image quality of projectors in a bright room.

  • We analyzed the problem of the typical definition of the viewing angle, where the contrast ratio is higher than 1:10 and suggest the new definition of the viewing angle by considering the contrast ratio, color shift, luminance and gamma shift in the viewing direction all together.

  • This paper presents a method of adaptive image enhancement with dynamic range compression and contrast enhancement. The dynamic range compression is to adaptively enhance the dark area using illumination component of DCT compression block. The contrast enhancement is to modify the image contrast using retinex theory that uses the HVS properties. The block artifacts and other noises, caused by processing in the compression domain, were removed by after processing.

  • This paper describes a novel method for image contrast enhancement by controlling gamma curve in AMLCD. The key idea is to automatically manipulate gamma voltage in accordance with the image data distribution. This method is applied to 17" SXGA LCD monitor module. The contrast ratio and the brightness are enhanced respectively by about 3 times and 1.7 times, by using the proposed method.

  • The absorption coefficient of contrast media was measured region of diagnostic X-ray. Relative values of absorption coefficient was found the largest peak in the range of $60{\sim}70kVp$ for sodium sulfate and 60kVp for iodine. Increasing the thickness of contrast media and patient, the values of absorption coefficient was rising.

  • This paper investigates simple gray level image enhancement technique based on Genetic Algorithms and Local Statistics. The task of GA is to adapt the parameters of local sliding masks over pixels, finding out the best parameters preserving the brightness and possibly preventing the creation of intensity artifacts in the local area of images. The algorithm is controlled by GA as to enhance the contrast and details in the images automatically according to an object fitness criterion. Results obtained in terms of subjective and objective evaluations, show the plausibility of the method suggested here.

  • Abstract - Tribofilms formed on won surface protect the DLC coating surface and decrease the fiction coefficient. However it is very difficult to evaluate their micromechanical properties due to their small thickness, inhomogeneity and discontinuity. The phase contrast images in tapping mode atomic farce microscopy allow an estimation of inhomogeneity in micromechanical properties of the sample surface. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate how the phase contrast images contribute to the characterization of thin tribofilms.
