  • The water extract of Cichorium intybus (WECI) showed a remarkable antioxidative effect on LDL, and inhibitory effects on the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and the Degradation of fatty acids in LDL. Vitamin 1 and unsaturated fatty acids in LDL were protected by adding WECI from the effects of metal catalyzed LDL oxidation. From the results obtained, we conclude that LDL oxidation is inhibited in vitro by the addition of WECI, and that LDL is protected by WECI from oxidative attack, as shown by agarose gel electrohporesis.

  • Seven species of Umbellifer-plants and five Compositae-plants were examined for the presence of polyacetylenic compounds. By using the UV-and IR-spectrometric technique combined with preparative T.L.C., the presence of polyacetylenic compounds was identified in Heracleum moellendorffi $H_{ANCE}$ and Aster scaber $T_{HUNBERG}$.

  • Repeated column chromatographic works of hexane fraction of Aster scaber afforded some volatile mixtures of two or three components, which process potent inhibitory activity(more than 90% of control at $50{\mu}g/ml$) to the resistance of multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus SA2 when combined with chlorampenicol($50{\mu}g/ml$).

  • The essential oil fraction of Chrysanthemum sibiricum Turcz. (Compositae) was analysed by means of TLC and GLC. Utilizing silicagel column chromatography, a blue-color compound was isolated, and purified by preparative TLC. The obtain compound had the same Rf-value on TLC and exactly same UV-visible and IR spectra with that of chamazulene isolated from Matricaria chamomilla L. The composition of the essential oil was also compared with those from flowers of Chrysanthemum indicum L. and Chrysanthemum morifolim Ramatuelia.

  • Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (Compositae), which is called Gu-Jul-Cho, has been used as traditional medicine in pneumonia, bronchitis, common cold, pharyngitis, bladder-related disorders, women's diseases, and hypertension, etc. In this study we have investigated various biological activities of methanol extracts and their main component, linarin isolated from this herb. The antipyretic effect of them was tested by Brewers yeast method and the antiinflammatory activities, with arachidonic acid, o-tet-radecanoylphorbol 13-acetate and carrageenan. Their antipyretic and antiinflammatory activities were more potent than acetaminophene and aspirin. They also showed stronger hepatoprotective activities than ones of silymarin in mice.

  • $\alpha$-Linolenic acid ethylester, $C_{19}$ spiroketalenolether polyyne, herniarin and steroid were isolated from the leaves of Artemisia selengensis (Compositae). The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Liver protective effects of these constituents were studied using galactosamine and CCI$_{4}$-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.
