The Case Study of the Nutrition Services for Patients as a Result of the Changes in Food Services Management (병원급식의 위탁 운영에 따른 영양서비스 변화에 대한 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between changes in the Department of Nutrition and patient satisfaction, following the changes in Food Services Management. Statistical data analyses were completed using the SAS/Win 6.12 program. The results can be summarized as follows. The working environment for dietitians and cooking and meal serving assistants was improved following to a change catering of food service management. The number of dietitians who worked in medical nutritional therapy and food services was increased from one to four, and the number of dietary consultations and meal rounds were increased 2.5-fold and 5-fold, respectively after the change services were implemented. Among the 10 items included in the patient satisfaction questionnaire, "Taste of meals" (p< 0.01) and "Satisfaction of offered menus" (p < 0.01) showed significantly higher scores before the catering. "Kindness of meal sewing assistant" this increase was not statistically significant, showed increased satisfaction after the catering, however.n after the catering, however.

  • Nowadays, the environmental vibration criteria has been severely restricted from the viewpoint of recipient. The vibration created by urban transit systems can be an important source of community discontent, and can have influence on high technology equipments. This has led to a desire of transit system operators to reduce vibration and to minimize community exposure to vibration. Recent research in this area has significantly increased for transit system engineers to reduce vibration. Unlike other material, soil has a complicated characteristic and it is very difficult to prevent vibration from transmitting. Generally, the trench can use to breaking propagation of vibration on passing way but needs much too maintenance. Therefore, the filled materials for trench had successfully developed and the characteristic test for the filled material had conducted during this term. Finally, we had executed analyses of real characteristic through the propagation test of ground vibration.

Association between Maternal Feeding Practices and Excessive Weight Gain in Infants

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the association between maternal feeding practices and excessive weight gain in infants. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional design and included 240 pairs of mothers and their infants (129 boys and 111 girls) in public healthcare centers in the Daejeon area in South Korea. Via multivariate analyses, the association between maternal feeding practices and excessive weight gain in infants was identified. Results: Among 240 infants in this study, 39 (16.3%) infants gained excessive weight during 12 months after birth. Using multivariate logistic regression with adjustment for covariates, more than 7 months of exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a reduced likelihood of excessive weight gain in infants during the 12 months after birth (adjusted odds ratio: 0.39, 95% confidence interval: 0.02~0.81, p=.029). Conclusion: Based on these results, nurses in communities and clinics should educate mothers on the importance of longer durations of exclusive breast feeding and develop strategies for encouraging such behavior. Furthermore, support for exclusive breast feeding should be provided in various settings.

Causes and Spatial Characteristics of Neighborhood Relations by Family Life Cycle (생애주기에 따른 이웃관계의 형성요인과 공간적 특성)

  • Based on residents' survey data in Seoul, this study attempts to empirically answer to four research questions regarding neighborhood relations (NR) which are necessary for community building: How important NR is compared to other social relations, what factors establish NR, how large NR's geographical extent is, and what are major meeting places among neighbors. A series of statistical analyses demonstrates that characteristics of NR vary greatly by family life cycle. In the stage of couple without child, NR has no significant meaning. NR becomes important from the stage of child care, and it is formed through the medium of children, particularly children's schools in the stage of child of elementary school as well as secondary schools. As the result, NR's geographical boundary extends beyond residential block or multi-family housing (apartment) estate while cafe and restaurant serve as dominant meeting places in these life cycle stages. On the contrary, after children are married and leave home, casual encounters resulted from spatial proximity become an important cause of NR. Likewise neighbors' geographical distribution is relatively concentrated within residential block or apartment estate, while community facilities play a role of meeting places as originally planned and designed.

Urban Thermo-profiles and Community Structure of Quercus mongolica Forests along an Urban-rural Land Use Gradient: Implications for Management and Restoration of Urban Ecosystems

  • Land cover changes associated with urbanization have driven climate change and pollution, which alter properties of ecosystems at local, regional, and continental scales. Thus, the relationships among urban ecological variables such as community composition, structure, health, soil and functioning need to be better understood to restore and improve urban ecosystems. In this study, we discuss urban ecosystem management and research from a futuristic perspective based on analyses of vegetation structure, composition, and successional trends, as well as the chemical properties of soils and the distribution of heat along an urban-rural gradient. Urban thermo-profile analysis using satellite images showed an obvious mitigating effect of vegetation on the Seoul heat island. Community attributes of Quercus mongolica stands reflected the effects of urbanization, such as pronounced increases in disturbance-related and pollution-tolerant species, such as Styrax japonica and Sorbus alnifolia. Retrogressive successional trends were detected in urban sites relative to those in rural sites. Changes in the urban climate and biotic environment have the potential to significantly influence the practice and outcomes of ecological management, restoration and forecasting because of the associated changes in future bio-physical settings. Thus, for management (i.e., creation and restoration) of urban green spaces, forward-thinking perspectives supported by historical information are necessary.

Perception of Nutrition Labeling on Restaurant Menus among Adults in Suwon (수원시 거주 성인의 외식 메뉴 영양표시에 대한 인식)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the perception of nutrition labeling on restaurant menus, and to analyze the differences among subject's characteristics, eating-out behaviors, and dietary attitudes. Information concerning general characteristics, health status, eating-out behaviors and dietary attitudes of subjects was collected by a structured questionnaire. From January 5th to February 27th in 2009, 406 questionnaires were completed by 157 males and 249 females. Statistical analyses were performed using by SPSS 14.0 package program. The perception of the importance of nutrition labeling was 3.89, while knowledge of whether restaurants provided sufficient nutrition information scored 2.26 indicating that being highly conscious of nutrition labeling, respondents did not view the supplied information as sufficient. Nutritional perception was greater in females and varied in both genders with age and health status. Significant differences concerning the perceptions of nutrition labeling were evident, based on eating-out behaviors and dietary attitudes. The results imply that nutrition labeling on restaurant menus should be based on consumer characteristics. Relevant nutrition labeling might help improve health by encouraging proper dietary habits and providing valuable nutritional information. Recognition of the importance of nutrition labeling and strategic implementation of labeling in menus would be prudent strategies for restaurant managers. Factors Affecting Physical Activity of Korean Adults in Some County Areas : A Multilevel analysis (군 지역 성인의 신체활동 실천에 미치는 영향요인에 대한 다수준 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the individual and community level factors associated with physical activity and to identify its relative effects using a multilevel analysis among Korean adults in certain counties. Methods: A cross-sectional data of 39,547 adults (age range of 19~64 years) living in 82 counties from the 2013 Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS) was analyzed. Individual and social correlates from KCHS and physical environmental data from the Korean Statistical Information Service were collected. A multilevel logistic regression was performed using Stata 10.0 IC. Results: Multilevel analyses showed that the effect of social and physical environmental on engaging in moderate or vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was significant in comparison to the influence of individual correlates. The individual factors that were associated with participating in MVPA included gender, marital status, education, job, and household income. In the community level, social environmental factors associated with engagement in MVPA were higher satisfaction with healthcare service (OR=3.410, 95% CI=1.109~11.269), a high level of social support (OR=5.920, 95% CI=1.459~22.657) and social network (OR=1.025, 95% CI= 1.017~1.032). Conclusion: To promote moderate or vigorous physical activity in Korean adults in some counties, social environmental factors should be considered along with individual correlates.

Sulfate Reduction at pH 5 in a High-Rate Membrane Bioreactor: Reactor Performance and Microbial Community Analyses

  • High rate sulfate reduction under acidic conditions opens possibilities for new process flow sheets that allow the selective recovery of metals from mining and metallurgical waste and process water. However, knowledge about high-rate sulfate reduction under acidic conditions is limited. This paper investigates sulfate reduction in a membrane bioreactor at a controlled pH of 5. Sulfate and formate were dosed using a pH-auxostat system while formate was converted into hydrogen, which was used for sulfate reduction. Sulfide was removed from the gas phase to prevent sulfide inhibition. This study shows a high-rate sulfate-reducing bioreactor system for the frrst time at pH 5, with a volumetric activity of 188 mmol $SO_4^{2-}$/I/d and a specific activity of 81 mmol $SO_4^{2-}$volatile suspended solids/d. The microbial community at the end of the reactor run consisted of a diverse mixed population including sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Effects of Elastic Band Resistance Training on Muscle Strength among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of elastic band resistance training for muscle strength among community-dwelling older adults. The systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). Data were pooled using fixed effect models. Sit to stand, arm curl, and grip strength were analyzed for main effects. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the I2 statistics and publication bias was evaluated by funnel plots. Twelves studies were included representing 611 participants. Elastic band resistance training was effective for lower (d=3.89, 95% CI: 3.03, 4.75) and upper extremity muscle strength (d=4.08, 95% CI: 2.94, 5.23). Heterogeneity was moderate and no significant publication bias was detected. Based on these findings, there is clear evidence that elastic band resistance training has significant positive effects on muscle strength among community-dwelling older adults. Further study will be needed to perform subgroup analysis using number of sessions and exercise intensity as predictors.

The Effects of the Improvement of the Food Service Environment on Patients′ Satisfaction with the Hospital Food Service - Focused on Case Studies - (급식환경 개선이 환자식 만족도에 미치는 영향 -사례 연구 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess how the changes in the food services environment on patients satisfaction with the hospital food service. Statistical data analyses were completed using the SPSS 11.0 program. The results can be summarized as follows: The flow line and environment of the food services in the hospital were improved through remodeling, which included the replacement of all cooking utensils, ventilation facilities and material storages, the purchase of a combi steamer, and the change of meal carts and trays. After the remodeling, the hospital food service was improved so that it provided spoons at each meal, diversified the menu utilizing the combi steamer, served event meals three times a week as well as water boiled with burned rice in the morning twice a week. In addition, various types of tableware were used in the table settings to produce attractive visual effects. Among the 10 items included on the patient satisfaction questionnaire, ″satisfaction with offered menus″ (p < 0.01) showed significantly higher scores before the remodeling. ″cooking/seasoning of food″, ″amount of meals″ and ″taste of meals″ were not statistically significant, but showed increased satisfaction after the remodeling. However ″temperature of food″, ″cleanliness of clothes and features″ and ″satisfaction with meal times″ were not statistically significant, but showed decreased satisfaction after the remodeling.
