Effects of Inter-phoneme Probabilities on the Acceptability Judgment of Korean CVC Nonwords

  • Recent experimental studies have shown that language-users' knowledge of the statistical characteristic of their native language plays a key role in their task performance. One specific instance of this that the current study focuses on is the effect of phonotactic probabilities on speakers' wordlikeness judgment of nonwords. In this paper, I explore the question of whether the judgment of Korean speaking subjects as to the wordlikeness of Korean nonsense words is influenced by the degree of association between two-phoneme sequences in Korean. The current results suggest that the objective measure of correlations (expressed by $r_{\phi}$ values) between an onset consonant and a vowel inside Korean syllables play an important role in Korean speakers' nonword processing. The current results additionally indicate an effect of the correlations of two-phoneme sequences including vowels and coda consonants on nonword processing. Implications of these findings for Korean speakers' learning the correlations between adjacent segments inside the syllable are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to show the characteristics of phonetic contrasts of one-syllable words and speech intelligibility in hearing-impaired adults. Seven subjects with hearing-impaired participated in this experiment(2 males, 5 females). The test materials are 77 pairs of one-syllable words with phonetic contrasts. The results of this study were as follows: (1) The average score of intelligibility(scored accuracy) was the highest in contrasts of onset feature. (2) The scored percentages of error(except for combinations of contrasts) were the highest in articulatory manner contrasts of onset, tongue height contrasts of nucleus, and articulatory place contrasts of coda, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the syllable structures of ten Korean numeric sounds produced by ten subjects of the same age. Each sound was normalized and divided into onset, vowel, and coda sections. Then, acoustical measurements of each syllable were done to compare the ten sounds. Results showed that there was not much deviation from the grand average duration and intensity for the majority of the sounds except the two diphthongal sounds on which their boundary points varied among the speakers. Some syllable boundaries were quite obvious while others were ambiguous. There seemed some tradeoff among the syllable components depending on their acoustic features.

  • In this paper, we propose a MLP neural network architecture and feature extraction for Korean syllable recognition. In the proposed syllable recognition system, firstly onset is classified by onset classification neural network. And the results information of onset classification neural network are used for feature selection of imput patterns vector. The feature extraction of Korean syllables is based on sonority. Using the threshold rate separate the syllable. The results of separation are used for feature of onset. nucleus and coda. ETRI's SAMDORI has been used by speech DB. The recognition rate is 96% in the speaker dependent and 93.3% in the speaker independent.

영어 어말 자음군 구성에 따른 선행모음 길이 변화 및 어말 자음 비파열 현상에 대한 실험음성학적 연구 -무성 폐쇄음을 중심으로- (An Experimental Studies on Vowel Duration Differences before Consonant Clusters and unreleased stops of coda-position)

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of postvocalic consonant cluster (Contrasting nasal-stops consonant with stops) on vowel duration. In particular we focused on the rate of vowel duration in their words. (Experimental I ) and the tendency of unreleased voiceless stops at the end of the words.(Experimental II). The result of experimental I showed that the rate of vowel duration which is preceding single voiceless stops are significantly longer than those preceding nasal-stops counterparts and the percentage of English native speakers was longer than those of Korean leaners of English Experiment II indicated that the tendency of unreleased stop consonants occurred more frequently on single voiceless stops than nasal-stop clusters and Korean learners of English were more frequently produced the unreleased stops than English natives.

한일공동상관기의 상관후처리 소프트웨어 개발 현황

  • 한국천문연구원이 일본국립천문대와 2006년부터 개발한 한일공동VLBI상관기(Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator, KJJVC)의 상관결과를 과학적인 목적으로 활용하기 위한 상관후처리 소프트웨어 개발을 2009년부터 한일공동으로 진행하였다. 상관후처리 소프트웨어는 상관결과를 특정 파일 시스템으로 변환하고 이를 AIPS 등의 이미지 분석 소프트웨어에서 활용할 수 있는 FITS로 변환하는 부분을 말한다. 본 연구의 상관후처리 소프트웨어 중에서 상관결과를 특정 파일 시스템으로 변환하는 부분은 기존의 일본국립천문대 미타카 FX상관기를 위해 개발한 CODA file system을 개량하였으며, 이 파일 시스템을 KJJVC와 미타카 FX 상관기에서도 활용할 수 있도록 설계하였다. 상관결과를 파일 시스템으로 변환하고 이를 이용한 광역 프린지 탐색(Global Fringe Search) 소프트웨어의 개발도 진행하였다. 본 발표에서는 한일공동상관기의 상관후처리 소프트웨어 구성과 개발현황 등에 대해 기술한다.

  • 최근 인터넷 사용자가 늘어나면서 클러스터링 기반의 대형 서버가 등장하게 되었고 또한 분산파일시스템(DFS)에 대한 관심이 커지게 되었다. 기존 분산파일 시스템들은 파일시스템 측면의 많은 기능들이 제공되고 뛰어난 성능을 발휘하지만 사용자 인터페이스 및 관리 측면에서 본다면 미흡한 점이 많다. 본 논문에서는 분산파일 시스템의 종류와 플랫폼에 상관없이, 사용하기 쉬운 DFS Management System을 설계하고 구축한다. 전체 시스템 구조를 파악 할 수 있도록 GUI 환경을 제공하며, 모듈화/계층화 구조로 설계하는데 기존 DFS와 연동하기 위한 하부 통신모듈이 포함된다. 본 논문에서는 Java기반으로 DFS Management System을 구축하였으며, Coda DFS가 설치된 클러스터링 서버와 연동하여 시험하였다.

Place Perception in Korean Consonants

  • Place assimilation in Korean has been argued to reflect the consonantal strength hierarchy in which velar is stronger than labial which is in turn stronger than coronal. The strength relationship has been manifested in two ways in literature. One is through phonological representation as shown in Iverson and Lee (1994). The other is through perceptual salience ranking as suggested by Jun (1995). The goal of this study is to examine the perceptual salience of placed consonants through an identification experiment. The experiment conducted in this study reveals four facts. First, place identification of a prevocalic consonant is higher than that of a postvocalic one. Second, place identification of a stop in coda is more confusable than that of a nasal counterpart in Korean contrary to other previous studies. Third, velar is most confusable in place identification in contrast to Jun (1995) and Hume et al. (1999). Finally, place perception of consonants can vary depending on adjacent vocalic context. These results suggest that perceptual salience is one of the possibly several factors affecting a phonological process.

  • 본 논문에서는 점탄성 매트릭스와 탄성 강화입자로 구성된 복합재료의 크리프 거동예측을 미세역학 기반의 시뮬레이션을 통하여 수행하였다. 에폭시 고분자로 이루어진 복합재료의 경우 재료 특성상 탄성적 거동뿐 아니라 점성적 거동도 함께 발생하게 된다. 이렇듯 점탄성 거동을 보이는 재료의 경우 탄성만을 고려한 해석방법으로는 한계가 있으며 점성적인 특성 또한 고려되어야 한다. 점탄성 복합재료의 해석을 위해서 손상을 고려한 미세역학 기반의 해석 (Ju and Chen, 1994) 과 Mesquita and Coda (2002)의 근사식을 사용하였다. 이를 통해 구한 재료 물성은 복합재료의 크리프 거동예측을 위한 Kelvin-Voight (KV) 모델과 Standard Linear Solid (SLS) 모델에 적용되었다. 최종적으로 본 연구에서 제안한 손상을 고려한 점탄성 모델의 예측과 시험결과를 비교 수행하여 결과의 타당성을 검증하였다.

한국어 음소의 기능부담량 - 계량 언어학적 연구 (A Quantitative Linguistic Study on the Functional load of Phonemes in Standard Korean)

  • Not all linguistic units are of equal importance in the functioning of language. The present study aims to examine He functional load of phonemes in standard Korean, To achieve this goal, B analysed continuous texts selected from the textbooks of elementary school on a personal computer. The total number of syllables studied in this thesis is 101,637. The characteristics of the Korean syllable structures are as follows. 1) In a syllable head, /n/ occurs most frequently. 2) The frequencies of syllables with an onset are much higher than those with no onset ( 85% : 15% ), 3) In a syllable head, obstruents are preferred because their consonantal strength are great, (57%) 4) In a syllable nucleus, /a/ occurs most frequently. 5) The rate of occurrence of the monophthongs is 90.2%, and that of the diphthongs is 9.8%. Especially the three basic vowels(/i,a,u/) occur at the rate of 46.6%. 6) In a syllable coda, /n/ occurs most frequently. 7) The open syllables are favored (open syllable 68.7%, closed syllable 31.3%).
