  • This study provides an overview of the production costs of methane and hydrogen via water electrolysis-based hydrogen production followed by a methanation based methane production technology utilizing CO2 from external sources. The study shows a comparative way for economic optimization of green methane generation using excess free electricity from renewable sources. The study initially developed the overall process on the Aspen Plus simulation tool. Aspen Plus estimated the capital expenditure for most of the equipment except for the methanation reactor and electrolyzer. The capital expenditure, the operating expenditure and the feed cost were used in a discounted cash flow based economic model for the methane production cost estimation. The study compared different reactor configurations as well. The same model was also used for a hydrogen production cost estimation. The optimized economic model estimated a methane production cost of $11.22/mcf when the plant is operating for 4000 hr/year and electricity is available for zero cost. Furthermore, a hydrogen production cost of $2.45/GJ was obtained. A sensitivity analysis was performed for the methane production cost as the electrolyzer cost varies across different electrolyzer types. A sensitivity study was also performed for the changing electricity cost, the number of operation hours per year and the plant capacity. The estimated levelized cost of methane (LCOM) in this study was less than or comparable with the existing studies available in the literature.

  • Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were uniformly functionalized with Pd nanoparticles via ${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis. The Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were fabricated through a selective growth method. The sensing properties of the Pd-functionalized $SnO_2$ nanowires were analyzed in terms of their response to $NO_2$ and CO gases. The response time and sensitivity of the sensors were significantly improved for $NO_2$ at lower temperatures by the Pd functionalization. The enhancement in the sensing properties is likely to be due to the spillover effect of the Pd nanoparticles.

  • Cupric oxide (CuO) is a p-type semiconductor with band gap of ~1.7 eV and reported to be suitable for catalysis, lithium-copper oxide electrochemical cells, and gas sensors applications. The nanoparticles, plates and nanowires of CuO were found sensing to NO2, H2S and CO. In this work, we report about the comparison about hydrogen sensing of nano thin film and nanowires structured CuO deposited on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The thin film and nanowires are synthesized by deposition of Cu on different substrate followed by oxidation process. Nano thin films of CuO are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon substrate, whereas nanowires are synthesized by using a porous thin film of SWNTs as substrate. The hydrogen sensing properties of synthesized materials are investigated. The results showed that nanowires cupric oxide deposited on SWNTs showed higher sensitivity to hydrogen than those of nano thin film CuO did.

  • Tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) thin films were prepared on Si(100) substrate by PE-ALD using the $DBDTA((CH_{3}CO_2)_{2}Sn[(CH_2)_{3}CH_3]_2)$ Precursor. The properties were studied as a function of source temperature, substrate temperature, and purging time. Scanning probe microscopic images at the source temperature $50^{\circ}C$ and the substrate temperature $300^{\circ}C$ shows lower roughness than those $40/60^{\circ}C$ source and $200/400^{\circ}C$ substrate temperature samples. The purging time for optimum process was 8sec and the deposition rate was about 1 nm per 10 cycles. The conductance of $SnO_2$ thin film showed a constant region in the range of $200^{\circ}C\;to\;500^{\circ}C$. The thin films deposited for 200 cycle show a better sensitivity to CO gas.

  • Severe accidents in nuclear power plants can cause hydrogen-generating chemical reactions, which create the danger of hydrogen combustion and thus threaten containment integrity. For containment analyses, a three-dimensional mechanistic code, GOTHIC-3D has been applied near source compartments to predict whether or not highly reactive gas mixtures can form during an accident with the hydrogen mitigation system working. To assess the code applicability to hydrogen combustion analysis, this paper presents the numerical calculation results of GOTHIC-3D for various hydrogen combustion experiments, including FLAME, LSVCTF, and SNU-2D. In this study, a technical base for the modeling oflarge- and small-scale facilities was introduced through sensitivity studies on cell size and bum modeling parameters. Use of a turbulent bum option of the eddy dissipation concept enabled scale-free applications. Lowering the bum parameter values for the flame thickness and the bum temperature limit resulted in a larger flame velocity. When applied to hydrogen combustion analysis, this study revealed that the GOTHIC-3D code is generally able to predict the combustion phenomena with its default bum modeling parameters for large-scale facilities. However, the code needs further modifications of its bum modeling parameters to be applied to either small-scale facilities or extremely fast transients.

  • The effects of differential partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering on the magnetic and recording characteristics of magneto-optical disks were investigated. Different flows of oxygen were deliberately introduced into the sputtering chamber to have a variety of partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering. A residual gas analyzer was employed to monitor the oxygen peak before, during, and after sputtering and to estimate the reacted oxygen amount. Most of the oxygen introduced into the chamaber was reacted during sputtering. As the partial pressure of oxygen increased, the oxygen content of the TbFeCoCr film increased also. The oxygen appeared to be bound as Tb-O, effectively decreasing the magnetically active Tb content of the film The coercivity decreased but the squareness of the Kerr hysteresis loops was still excellent. The perpendicular anisotropy was not significantly affected by oxygen amount. The carrier-to-noise ratio, includi!1g the write power sensitivity and bias field sensitivity did not change too much with oxygen content in the film The disks sputtered with oxygen showed better bias field sensitivity with lower write power threshold than the disk sputtered without oxygen, due to high demagnetization during domain formation. No significant degradation of coercivity for the disk sputtered oxygen was observed during an accelerated aging test.

  • The $In_{2}O_{3}$ thin films were fabricated on a alumina substrate by spin-coating method and the gas sensing properties were tested. The coating solution was synthesized by the mixing of aqueous solution of $In(OH)_{3}$ and acetic acid, and ammonium carboxymethyl cellulose as a binder. The $In_{2}O_{3}$ thin films between 71 and 210nm thick were obtained by spin-coating between 1 and 7 times followed by drying at $110^{\circ}C$ and calcining at $600^{\circ}C$. The films consisted of a dense stack of tiny $In_{2}O_{3}$ particles between 23 and 27nm in diameter and covered well large grains of the alumina substrate. Then film thickness was well controlled by the number of spin-coating. The fabricated $In_{2}O_{3}$ films showed high sensitivity and very fast response property to CO and $H_{2}$.

  • Micro gas sensor with single electrode was proposed for improving stability and sensitivity. Generally, metal oxide gas sensors have two electrodes for heating and sensing. This fabricated new type sensor have only a single electrode by forming a sensing material onto heating electrode. Pt as a heating and sensing electrode was sputtered on glass substrate and a $SnO_2$ sensing material was thermally evaporated on Pt electrode. $SnO_2$ was patterned by lift-off process and then thermally oxidized in $O_2$ condition for 1 hr., $600^{\circ}C$. The size of fabricated sensor was $1.9{\times}2.1\;mm^2$. As a result of CO gas sensing characteristics, this sensor showed 100 mV change for 1,000 ppm and linearity for wide range($0{\sim}10,000\;ppm$) of gas concentrations. And the sensor shows a good recovery characteristics of 1% deviation compared to initial resistance.

  • [ $LaMeO_3$ ](Me = Cr, Co) powders were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The effects of the chelating agent and the polymeric additive on the synthesis of the $LaMeO_3$ perovskite were studied. The samples were synthesized using ethylene glycol (EG) as the solvent, acetyl acetone (AcAc) as the chelating agent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the polymer additive. The thermal decomposition behavior of the precursor powder was characterized using a thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The crystallization and particle sizes of the $LaMeO_3$ powders were investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and particle size analyzer, respectively. The as-prepared precursor primarily has $LaMeO_3$ at the optimum condition, i.e. for a molar ratio of both metal-source (a : a) : EG (80a : 80a) : AcAc (8a) inclusive of 1 wt% PVP. When the as-prepared precursor was calcined at $700^{\circ}C$, only a single phase was observed to correspond with the orthorhombic structure of $LaCrO_3$ and the rhombohedral structure of $LaCoO_3$. A solid-electrolyte impedance-metric sensor device composed of $Li_{1.5}Al_{0.5}Ti_{1.5}(PO_4)_3$ as a transducer and $LaMeO_3$ as a receptor has been systematically investigated for the detection of NOx in the range of 20 to 250 ppm at $400^{\circ}C$. The sensor responses were able to divide the component between resistance and capacitance. The impedance-metric sensor for the NO showed higher sensitivity compared with $NO_2$. The responses of the impedance-metric sensor device showed dependence on each value of the NOx concentration.
