  • The effects of activated-carbon (AC) packing length on the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) performance was investigated for the hydrogen separation from the multicomponent mixture gas. Linear driving force model was used to describe mass transfer between two phase and coupled Langmuir isotherm was used for each component as a nonlinear adsorption isotherm. When two adsorbents with a different adsorption capacity were packed consecutively in one bed, it is very important to determine the packing ratio of zeolite to activated carbon affecting the purity and recovery of the product. The activated carbon packing length in adsorption tower of 120 cm was determinated by the ending point of $CO_2$ contration. The optimum length of an activated carbon layer was 65 cm for production of high-purity hydrogen.

  • Adsorption equilibria of the gases $H_2$, $CH_4$, and $C_2H_4$ and their binary mixtures on activated carbon (Calgon co.) have been measured by static volumetric method in the pressure range of 0 to 18 atm at temperatures of 293.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K. From the parameters obtained from single component adsorption isotherm, multi-component adsorption equilibria could be predicted and compared with experimental data. The binary experimental data were applied to four models : extended Langmuir, extended Langmuir-Freundlich, Ideal Adsorbed Solution theory (IAST), and Vacancy Solution Model (VSM). The models were found to describe the experimental data with a reasonable accuracy. Extended L-F model predicts equilibria of mixture better than any other model.

  • This study investigates the metal adsorption properties of poly (lactic acid)-g-acrylic acid (PLA-g- AAc) synthesized by UV irradiation method. The properties including degree of grafting, water content, and ion exchange capacity (IC) strongly depend on the critical experimental factors such as UV intensity and AAc concentration. Under the optimized condition, the maximum degree of grafting, the IC value, and water content are 28%, 1.13 meq/g, and 38%, respectively. The synthesized ion exchanger shows strong capacity of adsorption for divalent metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Co^{2+}$, and greater selectivity of adsorption for $Cu^{2+}$.

  • In this study, the physicochemical characterization and adsorption performance of air pollutants (VOCs, SO2, and CO2) were evaluated for the recycling of zeolite used in the ion exchange process. The surface characteristics of the zeolite used were confirmed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, and the composition and specific surface area were measured through X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). There was no change in the surface properties of the used zeolite, but the content of potassium and calcium increased and the specific surface area decreased. The toluene, sulfur oxides, and carbon dioxide adsorption performance of the used zeolite was evaluated, and it was confirmed that the performance was improved compared to the fresh zeolite. In particular, for toluene and sulfur oxides, the adsorption amount increased by 2.6 times and 2.3 times, respectively, which might be due to the enhancement of the polymerization reaction and the increase of the base point, according to the composition of the used zeolite.

  • The objective of this study lies in identifying the applicability of zeolite for the removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. To this end, the author tracked adsorption variations as seen with the adsorption removal of wastewater ammonium and nitrate nitrogens. As a result, it was indicated that the maximum adsorption of zeolite acting on the adsorption removal of ammonium nitrogen would reach 120mg/g (weight of ammonium nitrogen divided by that of zeolite), and that Langmuir adsorption isotherm explained the adsorption of ammonium and nitrate nitrogens better than Freundlich adsorption isotherm. This means that zeolite makes ion exchanges with adsorbate for unilayer adsorption. It was also indicated that the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen with varying pH would be higher in the order of pH7 > pH5 > pH9 > pH3.

  • A study on the electrosorption of $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions onto a porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was performed to treat radioactive liquid wastes resulting from chemical or electrochemical decontamination and to regenerate the spent carbon electrode. The result of batch electrosorption experiments showed that applied negative potential increased adsorption kinetics and capacity in comparison with open-circuit potential (OCP) adsorption for $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions. The adsorbed $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions are released from the carbon fiber by applying a positive potential on the electrode, showing the reversibility of the sorption process. The possibility of application of the electrosorption technique to the separation of radionuclides was examined. The result of a selective removal experiments of a single component from a mixed solution showed that perfect separation of $Co^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ ions was possible by the electrosorption process.

  • Removal characteristics of Mn and Co was studied from the contaminated solutions via surface reaction with various calcium carbonate (calcite). Synthetic calcium carbonates which has different surface morphology as well as surface areas were prepared by a spontaneous precipitation method and used. Mn and Co removal behavior by the different solid surface demonstrate characteristic sorption behaviors depend on the type of calcite used, such as surface area or surface morphology. Calcium carbonate crystals (mostly calcite) which exhibit complicated surface morphology (c-type) shows strong sorption affinity for Mn and Co removal via sorption than on the a-type or b-type calcite crystals of less complicated surfaces. The applicability of two kinetic models, the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation and the Elovich kinetic model was examined on these sorption behavior. Elovich kinetic model was found more suitable to explain the very early stage adsorption kinetics, while the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation was successfully fitted for the adsorption kinetics after 50 hours.

  • This study was performed to obtain high conversion efficiency of $C_7H_8$ using non-thermal plasma and metal-supported catalyst. Adsorption-desorption characteristics of toluene was performed using 4A type (Zeolite) filled in a concentration reactor. Through this test, it was found that the concentration reactor has 0.020 g/g of adsorption capacity (at ambient temperature and pressure) and 3,600 ppm of desorption property at $150^{\circ}C$ (with in 20 min). In case of developed catalyst, toluene decomposition rate of Pd-AO (Pd coated catalyst) was better than Pd/Cu-AO and Pd/Ag-AO (Pd/Ag composite metal catalyst). Developed non-thermal plasma system was obtained flame amplification effect using injection process of desorbed tolune, and 98% of removal efficiency.
